Techland teases Dying Light 3 in a new protagonist poll

Techland isn’t making Dying Light 3 just yet, but they want to make sure fans know they’re thinking about another horror game sequel

Techland isn’t making Dying Light 3 just yet, but they want to make sure fans know they’re thinking about another horror game sequel. Dying Light franchise director Tymon Smetkala tweeted a poll asking fans who they’d like to see as the theoretical protagonist of a hypothetical Dying Light 3, with the caveat that it doesn’t mean production is imminent.

“DISCLAIMER: This is not Dying Light 3 announcement 🙂 But – we were chatting today overseeing last details for the Gut Feeling update (3 days to go!), and we couldn’t agree…so please help:  if we do DL3, would you be most excited if the main hero was (as a “profession”)” Smetkala said on Twitter.

The poll included:

  • Just a survivor
  • Nightrunner
  • Pilgrim
  • GRE Agent (turned good)

GRE Agent turned good won with 42 percent of the votes, followed by survivor with 33 percent. Pilgrim only received four percent, likely because Dying Light 2’s protagonist was one.

It might just be theoretical, but it raises some interesting possibilities about the series’ future. The GRE agency has always been a nefarious, almost comic-book-evil organization that evil scientists, incompetent officials, and corrupt chancers called home.

The prospect of a story that delves further into the faction and its effects on people in a post-infection world sounds intriguing, not least for its promise of more character depth. Dying Light 2’s factions were all different shades of horrible, so something less two-dimensional would be very welcome.

Meanwhile, Dying Light 2’s Gut Feeling update releases April 20, 2023, with a new event, transmog, and more in store.

Dying Light studio Techland is working on an open-world action RPG

Several Witcher and Horizon developers are part of the project.

It’s only been three months since Dying Light 2 came out, but Techland is already gearing up for another massive project.

On Tuesday, Techland announced a hiring initiative for a new fantasy role-playing game.

“Are you ready to begin a new, thrilling journey with Techland?” reads the studio’s statement on Twitter. “We are hiring for the unannounced AAA Open World Action-RPG in a fantasy setting!”

Some huge names from all over the Polish games industry are working on this fantasy RPG. Most notably, narrative lead Arkadiusz Borowik and narrative director Karolina Stachyra, CD Projekt Red veterans that worked on Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. There’s also lead animator Kevin Quaid who previously worked on the Horizon series, and lead game designer David McClure that did work on Deathloop. Pretty stacked teams, that’s for sure. Techland’s hiring page includes more details if you’re an experienced developer looking for a job.

There’s also one piece of concept art which you can check out below. It’s interesting since this is a fantasy RPG, but the building’s architecture doesn’t have that medieval aroma that something like Dragon Age or Elden Ring does.

After Dying Light 2‘s success, you’d almost expect Techland would keep focusing on that series. In fairness, the studio did say support would continue for five years.

Dying Light owners now automatically get the Enhanced Edition upgrade for free

That’s zero dollars and zero cents for everything.

Anyone that owns the original Dying Light is getting the Enhanced Edition at no additional charge. Yup, even us peasants that only bought the Standard Edition years ago.

On Thursday, Techland announced that Patch 1.49 for Dying Light will make The Following expansion and four major DLC packs for free. That includes goodies like The Bozak Horde, Cuisine & Cargo, Crash Test Skin Pack, and the Ultimate Survivor Bundle. Think of it as a Game of the Year Edition that materialized out of thin air. Perfect timing for those PS5 and Xbox Series X|S new-generation graphical tweaks.

If you already own the Enhanced Edition of Dying Light, tough break — no freebies for you. Well, the Tolga and Fatin event is going on right now, at least. The enigmatic twins need you to chop down several special zombie types under certain conditions. It’s not much, but what else can we expect from a seven-year-old game.

Unlike Dying Light‘s sprawling city of Harran, The Following is all about fleeing from zombies in the countryside. It’s well worth checking out, especially if turning the undead into dune buggy hood ornaments sounds appealing.

The Dieselpunk DLC is the only significant piece of content missing from Dying Light‘s Enhanced Edition, probably since it’s brand new. That addition costs $9.99 for anybody (ahem) dying for more.

The first Dying Light receives Xbox Series X|S update

The original Dying Light looks better than ever on new-generation consoles.

The new-generation patch for Dying Light is now available on Xbox Series X|S.

While the sequel might be what’s hot right now, Techland is giving aspiring zombie-exterminators plenty of reasons to revisit the original Dying Light. On Monday, the “next-gen upgrade” for Dying Light finally came out on Xbox Series X|S after hitting PS5 earlier this month.

Dying Light Xbox Series X Next-Gen Update

Three video options:

  • Performance mode with 60 FPS in Full HD
  • Balanced mode targeting 60 FPS in QHD
  • Quality mode with 30 FPS in 4K resolution

Dying Light Xbox Series S | Xbox One X Next-Gen Update

Two video options:

  • Performance mode with 30 FPS in Full HD
  • Quality mode targeting 30 FPS in QHD resolution
  • Introduced new networking utilizing the EOS solution

It’s impressive that Techland is still supporting the original Dying Light even as its sequel is still fresh in everybody’s mind. Several patches for Dying Light 2 Stay Human have come out in recent weeks, including one that fixes tons of glitches. Though it’s not surprising since Techland is known for ongoing support in its games, Dying Light 2 Stay Human is even supposed to get five years of content updates. Perhaps you’ll finally have a PS5 at some point in the next half-decade to see what all these new graphical bells and whistles look like.

The first Dying Light receives PS5 update

Xbox Series X|S will get the new-generation update later on.

The original Dying Light looks better than ever now that there’s a new-generation update for PS5 out.

On Tuesday, Techland released a patch for Dying Light that makes the seven-year-old title look great on PS5. Xbox Series X|S owners will also get the update, but it’s coming on a yet-to-be-announced date.

Dying Light PS5 Upgrades

  • Performance mode: targets 60 FPS cap in full HD
  • Balanced mode: targets 60 FPS in QHD
  • Quality mode: 30 FPS at 4K resolutions

PS4 Pro owners will also see improvements to the 30 FPS cap mode and new networking solutions with EOS to help long matchmaking issues.

Dying Light might be old(ish), but it’s worth playing with a group of friends if you haven’t already. Plus, it regularly goes on sale for cheap these days.

It’s surprising that Techland still supports the original game when Dying Light 2 Stay Human came out last month. Of course, the studio is still issuing big fixes and minor content updates for the sequel, with another big patch coming soon.

For those of you still scavenging around the undead wasteland, GLHF has several guides for Dying Light 2 Stay Human that should come in handy. From outlining all major storyline choices to safe code locations and combinations.

New Dying Light 2 gameplay video highlights paraglider travel and ferocious combat

Soar high about the undead hordes

Techland, the studio making Dying Light 2: Stay Human, has released new gameplay footage showing various gameplay elements.

In a video deep-dive, several development team members explain what makes Dying Light 2  a whole different (undead) beast from the first game. A prime example is a new paraglider, allowing players to soar over terrain while avoiding zombie crowds gathered on the streets below. Here’s to hoping the zombies don’t start sprouting wings!

Combat in Dying Light 2  appears to be much faster and inventive than before. There are more directional options for blocking incoming attacks, not to mention the viscera flying about is a lot, well, chunkier than it was in Dying Light

You can check out the Dying Light 2  gameplay deep-dive for yourself below. Just as a heads up, there’s some mature language in the video.

If you’re worried that Dying Light 2  might require some brushing up on the first game’s events, senior producer Kornel Jaskula elaborated on how the sequel ties into Dying Light.

“The action in the city takes place more than 20 years after the original game,” Jaskula said in the video. “It’s a completely new hero, completely new city, so we made sure that people who haven’t played the original will still enjoy this one.”

It won’t be long before we all get to try out Dying Light 2, as it’s coming out on Feb. 4, 2022.
