Warriors waive Dwayne Sutton following training camp appearance

The Warriors on Friday waived rookies Dwayne Sutton and Kaleb Wesson and forward Axel Toupane.

On Friday, the Golden State Warriors waived rookies Dwayne Sutton and Kaleb Wesson and forward Axel Toupane, the team announced in a press release.

Sutton, who went undrafted out of Louisville, totaled two points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist in two preseason games. His two points came on a fast break dunk on Tuesday in which he posterized Sacramento Kings guard Robert Woodard II.

The play started to unfold when Warriors rookie Nico Mannion ripped the ball away from Kyle Guy. Mannion started sprinting toward the other end of the floor and hit Sutton, who did the rest of the work.

The waiving of Sutton was expected after the Warriors signed him to an Exhibit 10 contract. He will likely spend time in the G League with the Santa Cruz Warriors, though his exact role will be determined given the uncertainty surrounding the G League season.

Meanwhile, Toupane posted averages of 2.5 rebounds and one block in 7.7 minutes in two games while Wesson averaged 1.7 points and two rebounds in 6.1 minutes over three games. Toupane and Wesson are also signed to Exhibit 10 contracts.

Report: Warriors signing undrafted free-agent Dwayne Sutton out of Louisville

According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the Golden State Warriors are signing undrafted free-agent Dwayne Sutton out of Louisville.

After reportedly signing Brad Wanamaker and Kent Bazemore in free agency, the Golden State Warriors weren’t done making additions to their roster.

According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the Warriors are signing undrafted free agent wing Dwayne Sutton out of Louisville. Sutton will join Golden State’s rookie class that features No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman and second-rounder Nico Mannion.

Via @ChrisBHaynes on Twitter:

After transferring from UNC Ashville in 2016, Sutton averaged 8.8 points on 46.2% shooting from the field with 6.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists in three seasons at Louisville.

As a senior in Chris Mack’s program, the 6-foot-5 wing matched his career-high from beyond the arc, averaging 35.4% on 2.6 attempts from long distance.

According to Connor Letourneau of The San Francisco Chronicle, Sutton will be invited to Golden State’s training camp with the chance to earn a two-way contract.

Via The San Francisco Chronicle:

Former Louisville small forward Dwayne Sutton has been invited to Warriors training camp with the chance of earning a two-way contract, a league source confirmed to The Chronicle on Monday.

With limited depth on the wing in Golden State, the 22-year-old will likely compete with Juan Toscano-Anderson and Mychal Mulder for a spot behind Bazemore, Andrew Wiggins and Kelly Oubre Jr.

The addition of Sutton will move Golden State’s Louisville alum count to two. In his final season of college hoops, Damion Lee spent the 2015-16 season with the Cardinals, averaging 15.9 points on 42.8% shooting from the field with 3.9 rebounds and two assists per game.

Warriors to sign undrafted free agent Dwayne Sutton to contract

Sutton was an All-ACC Honorable Mention selection after averaging 9.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists last season as a senior.

Louisville guard Dwayne Sutton, who went undrafted last week, has reportedly agreed to sign with the Golden State Warriors, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

Sutton was an All-ACC Honorable Mention selection after averaging 9.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 31 games played last season as a senior. He shot 50.5% from the field and 35.4% from 3-point range on 2.6 attempts per game.

The 6-foot-5 guard told Rookie Wire this month that his goal was to land on an NBA roster with a team that will best suit his future development and highlight his skill set on the court.

“I want to be in a situation where I can make myself comfortable playing my game,” Sutton said. “I feel like I can guard a few different positions, I feel like I can get to the rim and make plays above the room and knock down the outside shot and I feel like whatever team gives me the opportunity to do that I will.”

Sutton will likely sign a non-guaranteed contract and spend time next season in the NBA G League with the Santa Cruz Warriors. The organization has a strong development program and that will certainly benefit Sutton throughout the year.

Everything to know about NBA G League pre-draft evaluation process

Rookie Wire obtained every detail possible about the NBA G League pre-draft evaluation process, including all of the known invitations sent.

Rookie Wire obtained every detail possible about the NBA G League pre-draft evaluation process, including all of the known invitations sent.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many draft-eligible prospects not invited to the NBA combine have had trouble getting all of their information to team-decision makers in advance of the 2020 NBA Draft. To combat this, the NBA G League is offering a greater opportunity to be evaluated by team decision-makers.

This information included below was shared with USA TODAY Sports Media Group’s Rookie Wire on the condition of anonymity because the person who shared the details was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

While the G League Elite Camp was canceled this year, a “select number” of participants were given the chance to share virtual evaluations through both shooting drills and an NBA pro day.

Prospects who agreed to participate will use HomeCourt, a mobile basketball training application, to record on-court workouts. The results will be shared with NBA team staffers through the app.

Players were encouraged to have two staffers with them in the gym to assist with the process. The coaches and trainers were required to wear a face mask and gloves during the workout.

NBA Evaluation: 8 Shooting Drills (based on previous editions of the Draft Combine)

  • Warm-Up/free-throws (50 shots)
  • Spot-Up shooting (50 shots)
  • Shooting off dribble/pull-up jumpers (30 shots)
  • Mid-Range/off the catch (20 shots)
  • 3-point drill /3-pointers off the catch (20 shots)
  • Side-mid-side/3-point jumpers on the move (2 minutes)
  • 3-point endurance/catch-and-shoot at game speed (5 minutes)
  • Cool down/free-throws (50 shots)

Each shooting drill can be completed a max of three times. Only the best score is uploaded into the NBA Player Evaluation platform for all NBA teams to access the data and video.

This is how the results look, as obtained by Babcock Hoops’ Derek Murray:

NBA Pro Day: 45-Minute Open Workout

  • This workout allows the draft prospect to share the unique
aspects of his game through a 45-minute open workout.
  • Players are prohibited from partaking in live competition against any other draft-eligible and/or other players, including: informal scrimmages, pick-up games (e.g., 2-on-2), defensive drills (e.g., pick-and-roll coverage, post defense, etc.), offensive drills (e.g., Pick-and-Roll / Pop situations)
  • Pro Day must be a half-court workout.
  • Pro Day is an open workout for up to 45 minutes. If a player does NOT use the full 45 minutes, that is OK.
  • Must be completed on the same date as shooting drills. The player is allowed a 10-minute break in between.
