Micah Shrewsberry speaks after Notre Dame beats Western Michigan

Here’s some of what the head man said after his latest win.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – All things considered, Micah Shrewsberry has to be pleased with how his Notre Dame tenure has started. With the roster almost completely turned over from a season ago, any victory should be considered progress. That’s what happened when the Irish defeated Western Michigan, 86-65.

That’s not to say there aren’t some things don’t have to clean up. While he was happy to get the win, there also were some things he feels the Irish need to improve on. He made that clear during his postgame news conference.

One thing the media members covering the Irish have learned is that Shrewsberry gives very detailed responses to every question he’s asked. [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] also gave detailed responses, but Shrewsberry really loves to talk about his team and make it sound interesting, even finding humor in some of the answers he gives.

Here is Shrewsberry’s opening statement after the win and his answers to the two questions we asked him:

Tom Izzo discusses process to replace long-time assistant coach Dwayne Stephens

Long-time Michigan State basketball assistant coach Dwayne Stephens is finally getting a well-deserved opportunity to be a head coach this year with the Western Michigan Broncos. That leaves Tom Izzo with a decision to make on his replacement.

Izzo spoke to Audrey Dahlgren this week of WLNS about the decision and hints that he is looking at three guys who are all ‘apart of the family.’

LOOK: Tom Izzo releases statement on longtime assistant coach Dwayne Stephens taking WMU head coaching job

See what Tom Izzo had to say about longtime assistant coach Dwayne Stephens leaving Michigan State to become the next head coach at Western Michigan

Michigan State basketball’s coaching staff will again have a shakeup this offseason with longtime assistant Dwayne Stephens heading to Western Michigan to be the Broncos’ next head coach.

The news of Stephens’ departure broke on Monday, with the school making it official after reports circulated earlier in the day. Stephens had been an assistant coach on Tom Izzo’s staff for the past 19 seasons.

“Dwayne has been more than ready to run his own program for a long time and I think Western Michigan is getting an all-star,” Izzo said in a statement. “Dwayne is a terrific basketball coach and a great person who will be a tremendous leader for their program.”

Last year, longtime assistant coach Dane Fife left Michigan State for an assistant coaching gig at Indiana. Fife, however, has already been let go by the Hoosiers and potentially could return to Michigan State to fill Stephens’ spot.

Michigan State basketball assistant Dwayne Stephens gets WMU job

Dwayne Stephens has accepted the head coaching position at Western Michigan

Michigan State basketball assistant coach Dwayne Stephens has reportedly been offered and has accepted the head coaching position at Western Michigan. Stephens has been a member of Tom Izzo’s coaching staff since 2003, being an integral part of the program Izzo has built.

Prior to joining Tom Izzo’s staff, Stephens spent four seasons as an assistant at Marquette and three seasons at Oakland University. Stephens was a member of the Spartans basketball program himself during the 1989-1993 seasons.

This will be Stephens’ first opportunity at a head coaching position in his coaching career.

Two Michigan State men’s basketball coaches among Stadium’s top three Big Ten assistants

Dwayne Stephens and Dane Fife ranked in the top five of the conference’s assistant according to their peers.

Great coaching in the Michigan State men’s basketball program goes beyond Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo.

Two of Izzo’s assistants, Dwayne Stephenes and Dane Fife, have been named the best and third-best assistant men’s basketball coach in the Big Ten in a list compiled by Stadium.

College basketball insider Jeff Goodman polled 20 coaches in the conference to get their opinions on the top assistants and compiled the list from there. Stephens was the top vote getter as Izzo’s right-hand man.

“DJ has the unique ability to fit in with everyone. He has great people skills, but in all honesty, he is underappreciated as a ‘basketball mind.’ He is very good being my right-hand man on the bench in game situations. Will be an excellent head coach someday soon,” said. Izzo

One unnamed Big Ten assistant also noted Stephens’ involvement during games in a quote to Goodman, saying, “Dwayne has been a staple with the Michigan State basketball program for a long time as he has done an outstanding job recruiting, and is constantly in Coach Izzo’s ear during in-game play.”

Stephens has been an assistant at MSU since 2003 and has spent the last eight years as associate head coach.

As for Fife, he wasn’t far down the list, coming in at number three. Unsurprisingly Izzo had some nice things to say about Fife as well.

“Dane is a guy I’ve known since he was in high school and I was excited when we had the chance to bring him here, and that hasn’t changed in nearly 10 years. He’s a terrific coach, a great recruiter and knows the game. He has had a great impact on our success and I appreciate the commitment he’s made,” Izzo told Goodman.

Fife’s defensive mind and experience were mentioned by an opposing Big Ten assistant as reasons why he ranks so high.
