You need to read Dwane Casey’s statement on protests around the country

This one is powerful.

The killing of George Floyd has so many people at a loss for words. So many are just searching for the right words to say. Some are just left straight up speechless.

Detroit Pistons coach Dwane Casey is not one of those people. Somehow, he came up with the exact right words to say that perfectly reflect just how dire the situation is.

Casey reflected on how he grew up in Kentucky throughout the 60’s. He reflected on his experiences back then with racism in America and compared it to the situation at hand today.

And he’s left to wonder how much has actually changed since that time.

“I can remember exactly how I felt as an eight-year-old child. I felt helpless. I felt as if I was neither seen, nor heard, nor understood. As I have watched the events unfold in the days following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, a city where I coached and once called home, I see how many people continue to feel those same feelings — helpless, frustrated, invisible, angry.”

He continued.

“I understand the outrage because it seems the list continues to grow: Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd. The injustices continue to mount and nothing seems to be changing.”

Extremely well said from Casey. Those are very powerful words.

At 63, Casey is the fourth-oldest head coach in the league. Detroit had a 20-46 record when the season was put on hold – 13th in the East – so it’s unclear if Casey and his team would be included in the league’s restart proposal. If they are, he trusts that the NBA’s plan will consider him, as well as other individuals who might be at a higher risk. “I don’t know if we’re going to have perfectly safe if we’re going to get back in the next couple of months, or whatever it is,” he said. “But we trust that [Silver] and the entire NBA staff are working diligently. Those things you’d like to see, but those things may not be possible. The vaccine may not be there before we get back playing again. But I’m willing to do whatever the front office and the rest of the league is willing to do because I’m 100 per cent confident that they’re not going to put us in situation that’s not safe.”

Caboclo admits he used Fraschila’s quote as motivation for a period, but ESPN’s international basketball guru wasn’t exactly wrong. Caboclo spent most of the next four years developing with Toronto’s D League affiliate, helping that squad win a D League title in ’17 but playing just 25 games for an ascending Raptors team over the course of his rookie contract. “When I got on the Raptors, Coach [Dwane] Casey was playing 7 or 8 players a game. They weren’t looking to me very much,” Caboclo told Sports Illustrated over a recent Zoom call. “They said I was going to play every season, but I really didn’t play most of the time. I could see how it was going.”
