No. 7 Duke Obliterates Notre Dame

Vernon Carey, Jr. led the way for Duke with 21 points while Tre Jones put up 19.

“Show me the way to go home…”

Notre Dame wrapped up its three game road trip that made it the only ACC team to have to play three road conference games in a six day span this season on Saturday.

And at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday it was No. 7 Duke making the Fighting Irish wish for their home beds as the Blue Devils put their talent on full display en-route to a 94-60 destruction of the Domers.

Vernon Carey, Jr. led the way for Duke with 21 points while Tre Jones put up 19.

Despite the Irish keeping things within single-digits early in the second half, a Duke onslaught coupled with Notre Dame making just four second half field goals led to the route as Duke outscored the Irish 52-28 in the second half.

John Mooney was held short of his regular double-double as he scored 19 and pulled down nine rebounds.

Notre Dame’s best player Saturday was probably Juwan Durham who finished with a team-high 21 points in 23 minutes.

As a team Notre Dame shot just 36.5% from the field and went just 5-21 (23.8%) from beyond the arc.

Notre Dame falls to 15-10 overall and to 6-8 in ACC play. If there is good news it’s that the schedule finally gets them back home and a North Carolina team who has struggled awaits them Monday.

Duke moves to 22-3 overall on the year and 12-2 in ACC play. The Blue Devils will continue their march to try and claim a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament when they return to action Wednesday at North Carolina State.

Notre Dame wraps up their three road games in seven days stretch Saturday afternoon as they’re in Durham, North Carolina to take on No. 7 Duke.

No. 7 Duke is listed as of Saturday morning as a 12.5 point favorite and the total sits at 151.5 – up slightly from Notre Dame’s latest outing at Virginia that saw 99 total points scored in 45 minutes.

USA TODAY Still Not Putting Notre Dame’s Tournament Hopes on Life Support

Seven conference games remain for Notre Dame before the ACC Tournament and Saturday’s against Duke is the final before the stretch run that will see only Florida State as a likely NCAA Tournament team.

Despite the heartbreaking 50-49 loss at Virginia Tuesday night that set Notre Dame back to 6-7 in ACC play, not everyone has the Fighting Irish’s NCAA Tournament chances being dead just yet.

The USA TODAY released their latest “bracketology” projection and no, Notre Dame is not in the dance yet again, but they’re still in the “being considered” category and not in the “on life support” category that the outlet sorts bubble teams by.

Duke, Florida State, Louisville and Virginia are the four ACC teams that are represented in this latest projection as making the dance.

It has been a year of close calls for Notre Dame as they’ve nearly gotten wins against three of those schools listed above but fell just short in each case.  The Fighting Irish get their chance at Duke on Saturday night, where a win would mean a ton.

Seven conference games remain for Notre Dame before the ACC Tournament and Saturday’s against Duke is the final before the stretch run that will see only Florida State as a likely NCAA Tournament team.

As rough as it has been and as frustrating as things have sometimes gone, there’s still a chance this team ends up somehow dancing which would be quite the feather in Mike Brey’s cap.

Notre Dame Basketball: Battling the Blue Devils

If Notre Dame is indeed in the mix for the NCAA tournament according to some experts, it needs to support that opinion with an upset over No. 7 Duke on Saturday. The Irish (15-9, 6-7) will be at the end of a challenging three-game road trip. That it …

If Notre Dame is indeed in the mix for the NCAA tournament according to some experts, it needs to support that opinion with an upset over No. 7 Duke on Saturday. The Irish (15-9, 6-7) will be at the end of a challenging three-game road trip. That it concludes against the Blue Devils (21-3, 11-2) and the Cameron Crazies along with the fact that it will be telecast on ESPN with Dick Vitale at the mic only ups the pressure.

You know what? Let’s dig into the vault just because (Warning: NSFW).

Anyway, the Irish are going to have to find some momentum after an overtime loss to Virginia that shouldn’t have been. All they had to do was make one more basket, and they’d be riding a five-game winning streak. Instead, they’re up against a program they’ve lost five straight against and one that’s having another big season.

If John Mooney is going to have one of his double-doubles mean something, now would be the time to do it.

Notre Dame Basketball: Pflueger & Mooney Money in Win at Clemson

It was Pflueger who was out of sorts in a good way who helped paved the way

In an absolute “got to have it” game for Notre Dame basketball Sunday night, veterans John Mooney and Rex Pflueger and John Mooney were nails in the 61-57 Fighting Irish victory.

Mooney did what Mooney does, scoring 16 and pulling down 11 boards en-route to his 19th double-double on the year.

It was Pflueger who was out of sorts in a good way who helped paved the way. The fifth year guard had a season high 18 points while shooting a perfect five-of-five from beyond the arc.

For comparison, Pflueger entered Sunday shooting all of 30% from three.

Clemson was playing without leading scorer and rebounder Aamir Simms who was dealing with the flu. They wound up being led by guards Tevin Mack and Alex Hemenway who each finished with 16.

The Tigers fell to 11-12 overall on the year and 5-8 in ACC play.

Notre Dame won their fourth straight ACC game to improve to 15-8 overall and get back to .500 and 6-6 in the league.

The difficulty scale now gets turned up for Mike Brey and Notre Dame as the Irish return to action Tuesday night in Virginia before a trip to Cameron Indoor Arena and Duke awaits Saturday.

Notre Dame Football: Thoughts on 2020 Home Kickoff Times

The only real double take upon seeing the release for me is that Stanford remains a night game.

Notre Dame’s home schedule for the 2020 season has long been known but kickoff times however were not. At least not until Friday when the team and NBC Sports announced the kickoff times for all seven home games this season.

Of those seven, six will be played at Notre Dame Stadium while the Shamrock Series makes a return at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, when Notre Dame takes on Wisconsin this October.

Here’s how the scheduled home slate looks time wise:

Sept. 12 – Arkansas, 2:30 ET

Sept. 19 – Western Michigan, 2:30 ET

Oct. 3 – Wisconsin (Shamrock Series, Green Bay, WI), 7:30 ET

Oct. 10 – Stanford, 7:30 ET

Oct. 31 – Duke, 3:30 ET

Nov. 7 – Clemson, 7:30 ET

Nov. 21 – Louisville, 2:30 ET

As expected the matchups with Wisconsin and Clemson will both be in primetime. The Shamrock Series game has always been a primetime affair while Clemson being far and away the biggest of home opponents for Notre Dame this season gets the evening kickoff.

The only real double take upon seeing the release for me is that Stanford remains a night game. I know there have been some classics in this matchup but with the Cardinal seemingly on the decline I’m surprised to see NBC having interest putting this game in primetime. Why it may make sense though is that the slate of national games for that October 10 day doesn’t appear great at night, meaning ratings could benefit despite a not great matchup:

Texas/Oklahoma is always a noon ET kickoff while Clemson/Florida State, Ohio State/Iowa, and Michigan/Michigan State all appear to be lopsided matchups from this far out.

The SEC has a couple big games that week with Auburn and Georgia doing battle and LSU taking on Florida but it is hard to imagine CBS not choosing its one primetime SEC game for the year to not include Alabama or LSU for a second consecutive season as that honor went to Notre Dame and Georgia in 2019.

Jamison Crowder working out with Daniel Jones, Giants receivers at Duke

Jamison Crowder is working out with Daniel Jones, Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton at Duke.

Jamison Crowder is getting a little work in with the Jets’ MetLife Stadium roommates.

According to The Record’s Art Stapleton, Crowder joined Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton for some offseason workouts at Duke University. Both Crowder and Jones are Duke alumni.

Crowder is from Monroe, North Carolina, which is two and a half hours from Duke. So this doesn’t have to do as much with the Giants players at the university, but rather Crowder being closer to home.

Crowder played at Duke from 2011-2014. He recorded 3,641 receiving yards in his college career to go with 23 touchdowns. Crowder was also used a lot on special teams as a returner. He had 65 returns for 869 yards and five touchdowns for the Blue Devils.

The 26-year-old just finished his first season with the Jets after spending the first four years of his career with Washington. In his first year in New York, Crowder had 76 catches for 833 yards and six touchdowns.

The chemistry between him and Sam Darnold was great throughout the season. Crowder acted as Darnold’s safety net and was regularly able to find open holes in the middle of the field.

The hope is that chemistry between Crowder and Darnold can continue into next season and evolve over the next couple of seasons. But for now, Crowder will get his work in at Duke with some Giants players.

Daniel Jones, Giants WRs working out at Duke

Daniel Jones continues the traditional Duke workouts with a few of his WRs.

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is hoping to usher in a new era of football as the starter under center, but he’s keeping a certain tradition alive—one that his predecessor Eli Manning did for years.

With the conclusion of Super Bowl LIV, Jones is getting some workouts in at the Duke facility, which also happens to be his alma mater. Wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton are also reported to be on hand for the workouts.

For years, Manning and a few of his wide receivers would partake in workouts at Duke during the offseason. Eli and his brother Peyton both played for current Blue Devils head coach David Cutcliffe. He was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee for Peyton’s years and the head coach at Ole Miss for Eli.

This has turned into an annual gathering for the Giants quarterback and with Jones having played for Cutcliffe for his entire collegiate career, it’s no surprise he’s getting some work in down there.

Having the leader of the wide receiver corps in Shepard and an intriguing emerging talent in Slayton there should help the chemistry in the passing game. It also shows these young players are willing to put in the work with each other during the offseason.

Jones is coming off of a rookie campaign that had both ups and downs. He finished with 24 touchdown passes but also threw 12 interceptions and fumbled the ball 18 times, 12 of which were lost.

Regardless, Jones showed poise and promise during his first season and while he will try to turn things around in this new era of Big Blue football, some traditions will live on.

Jeff Capel had no problem with the Cameron Crazies chant that infuriated Coach K

Capel responded on Twitter.

Jeff Capel is a Duke legend.

He was beloved a player and was a Blue Devils assistant starting  in 2011 until he was hired by Pittsburgh to be the Panthers’ head coach in 2018.

So you could understand why Duke’s die-hard fan section, the Cameron Crazies, would target Capel with a cheer during Tuesday’s game, a chant — “Jeff Capel, sit with us” — that was all in good fun.

You could also understand why Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski might misinterpret that chant as taking a shot at a Duke legend, which is why Coach K went off, screaming at the Crazies to “shut up!!!”

Krzyzewski apologized, thinking the chant was personal and suggested other chants:

Capel later tweeted he took “no offense” and retweeted a note a Duke fan had snapped from the “dirt sheet” that the student section gets to taunt opponents, which said “nothing bad to say here, love you Capel”:

It was all a big misunderstanding.

Duke at Clemson odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Duke Blue Devils vs. Clemson Tigers sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Duke Blue Devils (15-1, 5-0 ACC) – the No. 3 team in the USA Today Sports Coaches Poll – travel to Clemson, S.C., to square off against the Clemson Tigers (8-7, 2-3) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Littlejohn Coliseum. We analyze the Duke-Clemson odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Duke at Clemson: Three things you need to know

1. Clemson has played just three games over the last 15 days. The Tigers aren’t a good shooting team to begin with, ranking 255th in the country with a 42.4% field-goal percentage. Any rust and their 253rd-ranked offense (68.7 points per game) will be game-controlled into submission in a double-digit boat race. … Clemson lost by 19 at Duke (Jan. 5, 2019) in the last meeting between the two schools as the Blue Devils covered a 15-point spread.

2. Clemson figures as a second-50 squad in most advanced-analytics computer rankings. The Blue Devils have played five such foes this year. In those comps, Duke is 5-0 with a victory margin of 11 points. While this applies to a straight-up loss more than an against-the-spread defeat, the Devils’ Nov. 26 upset at the hands of Stephen F. Austin could well have a galvanizing effect against any subsequent similar failings. Duke has game-controlled nine wins since (6-3 ATS). Figure the Blue Devils’ next loss – whenever that may be – coming to a top-15.

3. Duke’s best defensive efforts are up close in the rear-view mirror. The Devils have excelled in creating more turnovers of late, all while taking care of the basketball on their own possessions. That’s a solid formula for avoiding close games.

Prediction

Duke 76, Clemson 63

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. Duke (-589) is too chalky. Every $5.89 wagered will only profit $1 if the Blue Devils win. Clemson (+425) will profit $4.25 on every $1 bet if it prevails, but that isn’t happening.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The Blue Devils are 3-1 ATS over four road games, and they are 6-3 ATS in their last nine games. Clemson is 4-5 ATS over its last nine.

How much energy can the home crowd bring tonight at Littlejohn Coliseum? Bleary-eyed Tiger fans – slumping after Monday’s College Football Championship game – may not have much to cheer about in the second half. Take DUKE -10.5 (+100).

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U is 2-2 in Duke’s road games and 5-5 in Clemson’s home games. Duke wants to play a faster pace in this one. A major offensive rebounding advantage for the Devils and a low rate of getting to the foul line for the Tigers should work against Clemson in its efforts to slow things down. Take the OVER 134.5 (-115).
