Explaining why top prospect Duke star Kyle Filipowski may fall in the 2024 NBA Draft

What is going on with Kyle Filipowski right now?

Every year, there are players expected to hear his name called early in the draft but who fall lower than initially anticipated. One of the players in the 2024 NBA Draft who could deal with such a slide is Kyle Filipowski.

Filipowski, who was ACC Rookie of the Year and MVP of his conference tournament as a freshman, opted to return to the Duke Blue Devils for his sophomore season. After his first collegiate campaign, he elected to have hip surgery.

He then debuted as the predicted No. 11 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft on HoopsHype’s Aggregate Mock Draft last September and remained a lottery projection in January 2024. Just a few months ago in March, he had risen as high as No. 9 overall.

Filipowski, who recently had a fantastic interview with For The Win, is widely considered as one of the top players at his position in this class. After averaging 16.4 points with 8.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game last year as a sophomore, he was named as a consensus second-team All-American.

So why do many feel that his draft stock is sliding? Here are some of the latest reports.

Athleticism

Jonathan Wasserman (via Bleacher Report): “Measurements and athletic testing results from the NBA combine won’t do Kyle Filipowski any favors. With shoes on, (6’10.75″ in socks), he’ll wind up with a negative wingspan (6’10.5″). And he finished in the bottom half of the foot speed and leaping tests. His draft stock has mostly remained unchanged for the past few months, though pre-draft risers could push him down boards.”

Other measurements

Kevin Pelton (via ESPN): “Filipowski’s wingspan (6-10½) measured shorter than his barefoot height (6-10¾) at the combine, a rarity for any NBA player but particularly a big man. In the NBA’s database, there have been three first-round picks as tall as Filipowski with a so-called negative wingspan: Frank Kaminsky, Kelly Olynyk and Mason Plumlee.”

Defense

College head coach No. 1, to David Aldridge (via The Athletic): “I think he’s a good player. My big thing for him, for that league, is: What position? Where he struggled this year was when he played against bigger guys – not necessarily height, but guys who had the physicality to stand up to him. He didn’t have Lively this year so he wound up playing the five. Offensively, he can shoot it, he can put it on the floor, and I was really impressed with his passing this year. He showed that. But the defensive part is the part that would concern me. One of them dudes is gonna knock the s— out of him, and what is he gonna do then?”

Other players are rising

Krysten Peek (via Yahoo): “Filipowski falling in the first round doesn’t necessarily reflect his body of work, but that other players have higher ceilings and are rising after workouts and team meetings.”

Filipowski could wait a bit longer than he would like to actually hear his name called in the 2024 NBA Draft. But perhaps that leads to him ending up in a winning situation on more of a contending team picking later in the first round.

At BetMGM, Filipowski entered the draft with +550 odds to hear his name called in the top 20 picks with a draft position over/under set at 23.5 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Broncos QBs will throw with WRs in Dallas before training camp

Broncos quarterbacks are planning to get teammates together for offseason throwing sessions in Dallas before training camp begins.

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had an annual offseason tradition of taking teammates to Duke for offseason workouts ahead of training camp. Players no longer travel to North Carolina, but the tradition of QBs throwing with WRs in the offseason has continued.

Russell Wilson invited teammates to his home in California for offseason workouts over the last two years and the team’s current QBs — Jarrett Stidham, Zach Wilson and Bo Nix — are planning to throw with their receivers in Texas this offseason.

“The guys have already planned something for us to be able to go and get together at some point in July so that we can all go and get some work away from the facility, away from the coaches, just us,” wide receiver Courtland Sutton said Tuesday.

“[We’ll build] fellowship together, go out there and work together, get some work on the field but then also get some dinner, get to know each other even more. I think the teams that have the most success are really close away from the field as well as on the field. So we already have it kind of linked up, and guys are looking forward to it. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Stidham later confirmed to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Thomasson that he and his teammates will throw together in Dallas — his home area — for a week after July 4th. Players will later report to Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit in late July for the official start of training camp.

If any highlights of their offseason workouts are posted on social media, we will share them on Broncos Wire.

Duke’s Jared McCain in OKC for presumed predraft workout with Thunder

Duke’s Jared McCain in OKC for presumed predraft workout with Thunder.

The calendar has flipped to June, which means NBA teams are intensifying their predraft process and hosting players for workouts and visits. The 2024 NBA draft will take place from June 26-27.

The Oklahoma City Thunder enter this year’s class with a sole draft pick of the No. 12 selection. OKC was gifted the free lottery pick via the Houston Rockets.

The Thunder will host several meetings with draft prospects in the coming weeks. This includes players outside the lottery range as OKC will likely seek to add undrafted free agents or even buy back into the second round if it likes someone enough.

One possibility is Duke guard Jared McCain. He was spotted at the OKC airport for a presumed predraft workout with the Thunder, per The Athletic’s Andrew Schlecht.

In 36 games, McCain averaged 14.3 points on 46.2% shooting, five rebounds and 1.9 assists. He shot 41.4% from 3 on 5.8 attempts. He’s a bit undersized as a guard at 6-foot-2, 197 pounds.

The 20-year-old is the classic one-and-done prospect. He’ll be an option for the Thunder at the 12th spot. McCain is expected to go in the lottery range.

A full list of 2024 NBA draft prospects that have worked out or visited the Thunder in the predraft process can be viewed here.

Nolan Smith admits 2010 Butler vs. Duke NCAA Championship game was boring

Nolan Smith admits to Theo Pinson that the 2010 Butler vs. Duke NCAA Championship game was boring while breaking down the nail-biting ending.

It’s hard to say an NCAA championship game could ever be boring, but looking back through history, the Butler vs Duke one is hard to deny that.

And even former Duke star Nolan Smith admittedly says so.

Smith appeared on Tidal League’s Run Your Race podcast hosted by Tar Heel [autotag]Theo Pinson[/autotag]. The two athletes, who are natural rivals due to their school’s enriched history discussed numerous things on the podcast including the dreadful Butler vs. Duke game.

Despite a nail-biting ending, the majority of the game was a snooze fest that doesn’t hold up well against other NCAA championship games. Smith, who started in the backcourt alongside current Duke coach Jon Scheyer in the championship game, admitted to Pinson about the being boring to watch but not play in.

Neither team shot particularly well. Butler finished with 33.3% from three, and Duke finished at 29.4%. Stars struggled, with Butler’s star Gordon Hayward finishing with 12 points on 2-11 shooting. Smith didn’t have a stellar game either, finishing with 13 points on 5-15 shooting.

It’s intriguing to hear how Coach K’s decision to call for the missed free throw paid off big time, highlighting his brilliance.

With this addition, [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag]’s 2024-25 roster is complete. Over the past month, the Irish added two other transfers: Princeton guard [autotag]Matt Allocco[/autotag] and [autotag]Monmouth center Nikita Konstantynovskyi[/autotag]. The one thing all three transfers have in common is that they’re coming off career-best seasons.

After playing 11 games apiece in his first seasons with the Mountain Hawks with minimal contributions both times, Chebuhar broke out last season. He started 22 of 32 games and set career highs of 7.5 points and 5.0 rebounds a game. He got a taste of ACC action with road games against North Carolina and Boston College. Now, we’ll see how his game really translates from the Patriot League.

Coach K is helping the Lakers find a new coach, which is great news for the JJ Redick candidacy

Do you think Coach K is going to recommend JJ Redick or the other guys?

The Los Angeles Lakers dismissed former head Darvin Ham after two seasons coaching the team and are in the process of finding his replacement.

Following a first-round elimination at the hands of the Nuggets earlier this postseason, it didn’t take long for the organization to make a change at the coaching position. Ham was also on the hot seat following a “disconnect” in the locker room earlier this season.

RELATED: We should’ve known Darvin Ham was cooked as soon as LeBron James decided to podcast with JJ Redick

Now, per Shams Charania, the Lakers are reportedly seeking a coach who will “command the locker room” and “hold players accountable” in Los Angeles.

They will also want a coach who can “tirelessly gameplan” will providing “a level of structure and organization” for the franchise. One of the early leading candidates is reportedly former NBA player JJ Redick, who currently hosts a basketball podcast with LeBron James.

RELATED: 5 candidates to coach the Lakers next season (including JJ Redick!) after firing Darvin Ham

But what is particularly interesting is who else is involved in the hiring process (via The Athletic):

“Multiple sources briefed on the matter say one person who has become a respected unofficial resource for the Lakers during the process is legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, whose deep knowledge for candidates, such as Redick and others, provides a lens into the culture the organization wants and the characteristics of a potential staff around the next head coach. Krzyzewski’s history with the Lakers goes back to 2004 when Dr. Jerry Buss made a strong yet unsuccessful offer to hire Coach K.”

This is a fascinating meeting of the minds in a crossover episode involving two of the most notable basketball programs ever. But let’s peel this onion back a layer.

If the Lakers are considering Redick, there are few individuals who can speak to his character more than Coach K. He coached Redick while the sharpshooter was at Duke from 2002 until 2006.

Even though Krzyzewski reportedly has connections to “Redick and others” that the Lakers are considering as a replacement for Ham, his connection to Redick is the most meaningful.

Other leading candidates for the job so far, per the most recent reporting, are currently James Borrego and Sam Cassell. Neither attended Duke and neither have coached alongside him or played for him on Team USA.

Perhaps there are other candidates with connections to Coach K that we’ve not heard of yet. But for now, if the finalists are Borrego and Casell as well as Redick, the smart money is on the one that played for Krzyzewski.

No. 1 Notre Dame Routs No. 6 Duke to Capture ACC Championship

ACC Champs Again!

The sound you heard coming from Charlotte this weekend was the No. 1 Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team sending a warning shot to the nation.

The reigning national champions plowed through the ACC Tournament by routing No. 5 Virginia in Friday’s semi-finals before dismantling No. 6 Duke in Sunday’s championship game.

This is Notre Dame’s third ACC Tournament championship all-time and marks the first time the Fighting Irish have won both the regular season and conference tournament championships.

Notre Dame got things started early as Jake Taylor scored just over 2:30 into the game.  Reilly Gray, Taylor, and Chris Kavanagh combined to put the Fighting Irish up 5-0 before Duke finally scored in the closing moments of the first quarter.

Notre Dame would score three more times in the second to stretch the lead to 8-2 at halftime.

Duke scored twice to start the third period to get within four, but wouldn’t get any closer as Notre Dame would stretch the lead back to six, 11-5, by the third quarters end.

Notre Dame would score five times in the final period to close with a 16-6 victory over the team they beat in last year’s national championship.

Notre Dame now turns to the NCAA Tournament where they’ll be the odds on favorite to repeat as national champions.

Duke is a very very good team. They are incredibly talented and they have dealt with some injuries throughout the year and they are healthier now and we knew that they were going to give us a really tough fight. For us to be able to come out win the doubles point, and just stay on it in singles on every single court was huge. I’m really proud of the girls and excited.”

2024 NFL draft grades: Buccaneers pick OL Graham Barton at No. 26 overall

2024 NFL draft grades: Buccaneers pick OL Graham Barton at No. 26 overall

With the New Orleans Saints first pick out of the way, they now look ahead to what their other NFC South rivals will do. We got our first glimpse of what Jason Licht has in mind for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers draft class tonight with their first-round selection.

With the 26th overall pick, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Graham Barton, an offensive lineman from Duke University. Barton is an intriguing prospect, playing at left tackle the last three seasons, however, he did play center his freshman year. Some platforms project him to play center at the next level, while others believe he could stick at tackle possibly. The problem with that for Tampa is that Barton has not played right tackle, and Tristan Wirfs currently plays on the left side.

Ultimately this leads me to believe that Barton is going to start off as a competitor for the center position with Robert Hainsey, who had nine penalties last season and gave up 33 pressures with four sacks. Ultimately the flexibility of Barton is a positive, and his skillset made him one of the better players remaining on the board.

Grade: B+
