Dolphins place three players on the COVID list Thursday

The Dolphins are up to 11 players placed on the COVID list in the last two weeks.

COVID-19 has continued to work its way around the Miami Dolphins locker room.

On Thursday, the team announced that center Greg Mancz, tight end Cethan Carter, and linebacker Duke Riley have all been placed on the reserve/COVID list.

Mancz has been a backup center for most of the season, but he spent a few weeks on injured reserve. The team waived center Austin Reiter just over a week ago, so they’re stuck with just practice squad center Cameron Tom as a backup.

Riley has been a rotational linebacker and special teams guy this season. This may mean more opportunities for a guy like Sam Eguavoen if Riley can’t go.

Carter has played just 47 snaps on offense this year, bringing in two receptions for 16 yards, so the only thing they will have to worry about is his role on special teams.

These three join cornerback Justin Coleman, guard Robert Jones, and practice squad running back Gerrid Doaks on the reserve/COVID list. Since the first player tested positive just under two weeks ago, Miami has placed 11 players on the list in total.

WATCH: Dolphins block punt and recover for TD in the first quarter

The Dolphins took the first lead of the day.

The Miami Dolphins took the field and took the lead early in Sunday’s matchup with the Carolina Panthers despite their offense being on the sideline.

In the first quarter, Carolina was backed up inside their own 10-yard line when they were forced to punt. Dolphins linebacker Duke Riley, who delivered a big hit the play before, came through to block Lachlan Edwards’ punt. The ball was picked up by cornerback Justin Coleman for the score to put Miami up 7-0.

If the Dolphins are going to beat a team with a strong defense like the Panthers, they’re going to need these strong special teams’ contributions.

In 25 games with the Eagles, Riley logged 55 tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble, while earning special teams captain honors and the respect of his teammates.

Dolphins agree to terms with LB Duke Riley

Dolphins agree to terms with LB Duke Riley

The Miami Dolphins have secured their latest addition to the linebacker room — and this latest pickup features a similar athlete to the man he’ll be replacing within the Dolphins’ locker room from 2020. Miami has agreed to terms with former Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Duke Riley, who will be taking the place of Kamu Grugier-Hill as a critical special teams contributor and depth presence in the Dolphins’ linebacker room in 2020.

Riley is a speedy linebacker who will follow Grugier-Hill in more ways than one: Grugier-Hill served a special teams/coverage linebacker role with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019 before signing on with the Dolphins on a 1-year deal this past season. His replacement in Philadelphia? Duke Riley. Grugier-Hill’s replacement in Miami? Also Duke Riley.

So that’s a fun little layer to this signing for the Dolphins, who added Benardrick McKinney via trade earlier this offseason before adding on Riley to help the Dolphins completely overhaul the linebacker room.

Riley is, as an athlete, quite the dynamic linebacker. He passed through the 2017 NFL Draft process as a 232 linebacker and with a 4.58s 40-yard dash to his credit: he can definitely run. And with McKinney serving as a heavy-duty thumper between the tackles, the Dolphins were always going to need another rangy linebacker to pair with Jerome Baker in obvious passing situations. Riley should get a chance to compete for such a role; but given the short-term status of his contract it would be wise to avoid assuming the Dolphins will end up drafting a coverage linebacker in next month’s NFL Draft to help bolster the group and add more of a long-term solution to the mix.

There are several impressive coverage linebacker prospects available, including Ohio State’s Baron Browning and LSU’s Jabrill Cox. Either should expect to hear their name called in the 2nd- or 3rd-round, where Miami has three combined picks (No. 36 overall, 50 overall & 81 overall).
