Michigan basketball PG Dug McDaniel selects transfer destination

Best of luck to him. #GoBlue

If you were holding out hope that new Michigan basketball coach Dusty May would be able to coerce point guard Dug McDaniel to come back to Ann Arbor and withdraw from the transfer portal, that hope was dashed on Wednesday afternoon.

McDaniel was the biggest casualty in Juwan Howard’s firing, entering the transfer portal shortly after the announcement. He visited some schools in Big 12 country around the time May was announced, indicating he may not return to Michigan. And he ended up choosing one of them.

According to 247Sports’ Brandon Jenkins, McDaniel has chosen to transfer to Kansas State as his new school of choice.

With McDaniel gone, May currently has no point guard with his new program. The heir apparent, signee Christian Anderson — who had been committed to the maize and blue since 2021 — decommitted, asking for a release from his national letter of intent.

That means that May is going to have to dip into the transfer market to find his new floor general. While some of his predecessors in Ann Arbor (namely Howard) have had success recruiting the position out of the portal, it’s certainly no sure thing to seek a point guard who started out elsewhere compared to developing one in your own backyard.

Michigan basketball PG Dug McDaniel sets transfer visit

Do you want Dug to come back? #GoBlue

New Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May will have his work cut out for him when it comes to rebuilding the Wolverines’ roster.

At the moment, the maize and blue have but three scholarship players and with Olivier Nkamhoua’s time likely done in Ann Arbor, others have decided to depart via the transfer portal, including George Washington III (though he left the door open to return to Michigan), Youssef Khayat, and Tarris Reed Jr. The biggest, however, is point guard Dug McDaniel, who led the team in scoring in 2023-24.

McDaniel has yet to indicate whether or not he intends to give May a shot — nor has May indicated if he’d be open to his return. But McDaniel has taken a step towards leaving with having set a visit to TCU this upcoming weekend, per On3’s Joe Tipton.

McDaniel found himself in hot water this season when he was suspended for away games for much of the second half of the season due to academic issues. He returned for the final two games, but the Wolverines still struggled (and lost).

Though he struggled with academics as well as turnovers on the court, having an established point guard who is familiar with life in Ann Arbor would be a benefit. But it’s looking more clear that May may have to search for a replacement in the transfer portal if McDaniel’s current trajectory holds.

Michigan basketball starting PG Dug McDaniel to enter transfer portal

This one stings. #GoBlue

The University of Michigan parted ways with head coach and favored son Juwan Howard and now we’re starting to see some of the immediate repercussions.

The Wolverines lost freshman guard George Washington III to the transfer portal on Sunday but a bigger domino fell on Monday afternoon.

IT’S BRACKET MADNESS: Enter USA TODAY’s NCAA Tournament bracket contest for a chance at a $1 million prize.

The team leader in points and assists, point guard Dug McDaniel was (mostly) a bright spot on a bad team that set the program record in losses, having gone 8-24 in 2023-24. Before even waiting to see who his new head coach may be, McDaniel decided it’s time for a change of scenery, as it was revealed he’s entering the transfer portal.

McDaniel, as noted, led the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game, and in assists with 4.7 points per game. He did, however, find himself in some hot water this year as he got into some academic trouble, which led to him being suspended for road games for the bulk of the latter half of the season. While he climbed out of it and ended up starting on the road in the final two games away from Crisler Center, certainly that could have played a role in his departure.

McDaniel has two years of eligibility remaining after being thrown to the wolves in his freshman year. With incumbent starter Frankie Collins transferring to Arizona State following his own freshman campaign, the presumed starter at point guard was Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn, who ended up having an early-season-ending injury which thrust McDaniel into the starting role. He thrived in spots, but also struggled mightily with turning the ball over.

As of yet, Michigan has no head coaches lined up for interviews and will likely see more attrition before things get settled.

Rutgers men’s basketball finishes February with win over Michigan

Rutgers basketball got a needed win on Thursday night.

The three-game losing streak is over for Rutgers men’s basketball who rolled out to an impressive 82-52 win over Michigan on Thursday night. It was the second time in February that they beat the Wolverines.

With the win, Rutgers is now 15-13 (7-10 Big Ten).

As Rutgers got back in the win column, they were led by Clifford Omoruyi. The talented center scored 19 points and added 15 points to his resume. He also got some help from Jeremiah Williams, who had one of his best games of the season, scoring 19 points.

After struggling over the past week, Rutgers got back in the win column because of their ability to dominate close to the basket. They scored 48 points in the paint and only allowed 18. That allowed them to build an early lead they would not relinquish.

Michigan didn’t do much right in the game but there were a few bright spots for the Wolverines. That includes Dug McDaniel, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds and four assists.

With only three games left in the regular season, Rutgers will look to carry their success into March. Their remaining games are against Nebraska, Wisconsin and Ohio State. That stretch represents a great opportunity for Rutgers to improve their conference record.

Rutgers men’s basketball starts February slate with Michigan matchup

Rutgers men’s basketball has a big game this weekend against Michigan.

After a disappointing ending to January, Rutgers men’s basketball is back in action on Saturday. Rutgers will take on a Michigan team that has lost four straight and only won two conference games. This matchup represents a perfect chance for the Scarlet Knights to get back on track.

As Rutgers posted a 2-6 record in January, they struggled on the road. So far this season, they are 1-5 away from Jersey Mike’s Arena. To move up in the Big Ten standings, they must prove they can win in a hostile environment.

Additionally, Rutgers will need their stars, such as Clifford Omoruyi and Aundre Hyatt, to step up. Against Penn State on Wednesday, the talented duo scored a combined 13 points. When they are at their best, Rutgers offense is hard to stop.

While Rutgers has a better record, Michigan has plenty to prove. They are 1-9 in their last ten games and have allowed more than 90 points twice in that span. However, there have been a few bright spots.

The Wolverines have been led by Dug McDaniel, who is averaging 17.2 points and 5.1 assists per game. He has gotten some help from Oliver Nkamhoua, who is averaging 16 points a game.

Regardless of the outcome, this matchup should provide plenty of fireworks at a packed Crisler Center.

Michigan makes official statement regarding Dug McDaniel

A bad situation gets worse.

While Michigan’s football team is winning a national title, the basketball squad has been struggling amidst a 6-9 season that has the Wolverines sitting in the basement of the Big Ten. Tough.

To make matters worse, the team has suspended star player Dug McDaniels for the next six road games due to apparent academic issues. McDaniel will miss matchups with Maryland, No. 1 Purdue, Michigan State, Nebraska, No. 10 Illinois, and Northwestern.

This is a heavy blow for a team that relies on McDaniels, who leads the team in both points with 17.8 per game and assists with 5.1 per game.

David Kaplan, Meredith Kaplan, and Juwan Howard made a statement regarding the McDaniels suspensions which reads as follows:

“We have very high standards within our program, culture and university. Serving as mentors, we need to set the standards and pathways for our young men to succeed.
“Beginning with our game at Maryland, Dug McDaniel will not travel to road games until further notice.
“Dug will dress for home games, however, when we are away from Ann Arbor, he will work towards meeting several academic goals he has set and needs to meet.
“While I am disappointed, this is not something we take lightly. This is an important step for Dug and his success as a student-athlete.
“Going forward we will not have further comment.”
Michigan will likely lean on backup point guard Jaelin Llewellyn to replace McDaniels in the lineup. Llewellyn, who transferred in from Princeton, has been in and out of the lineup this season with various injuries and has played in just five games to date. In his appearances, he averages 8.8 minutes, 2.2 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists. Llewellyn’s best statistical season was in 2021-22 with Princeton when he averaged 15.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. Michigan will need him to step up if they expect to make a late run at a low March Madness seed.

Michigan basketball has been bringing in some big-time visitors as of late, and it appears that one of them is now in the fold.

2022 Fairfax (Va) Paul VI Catholic four-star point guard Dug McDaniel is rated No. 52 overall, regardless of position, according to 247Sports, the No. 9 point guard and second-best player in the state of Virginia. He took his official visit to Ann Arbor starting on Wednesday, and it appears it went about as well as it possibly could have gone.

While McDaniel hasn’t posted about his visit just yet, according to Tipton Edits — the Twitter account which has broken a lot of commitments as of late — he has committed to Michigan.

This marks Juwan Howard’s first commitment in the 2022 class. Recruited by Howard Eisley, McDaniel also had offers from Georgia, Florida, LSU and UConn, amongst others.
