Duane Washington signs with the Phoenix Suns

Look for Duane to make a name for himself now in the desert. #GoBucks

You had a pretty good feeling former Ohio State sharpshooter Duane Washington would find another NBA suitor before too long. That’s exactly what happened on Tuesday when the Phoenix Suns reportedly inked the former Buckeye start to a two-way deal. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Washington declared for the 2020 NBA draft a year early but had to settle for a two-way deal with the Indiana Pacers as an undrafted free agent. He found some success with the Pacers and even did enough to sign a real, live, multiple-year deal with the team before being waved in mid-July because of business decisions with cap space.

Now, after averaging 9.9 points per contest with the Pacers, Washington will get another shot with a Suns team that could use his hot outside shooting to bolster the offense.

The Pacers currently have $26.4 million …

The Pacers currently have $26.4 million in cap space so they need to make some moves to generate the $30.9 million needed to sign Ayton to a maximum contract. According to Wojnarowski, the Pacers plan on doing that by waiving Duane Washington, who is non-guaranteed, and waiving-and-stretching Nik Stauskas, Juwan Morgan, and Malik Fitts. Washington’s contract is non-guaranteed, so waiving him opens up $1.6 million. Stauskas, Morgan, and Fitts, all of whom were brought over from Boston in the Malcolm Brogdon trade, had their guarantees increased to all but $86,988 of their full salary amounts. By stretching their cap hits over the next three seasons, the Pacers will have $31.9 million in cap space.

For any Celtics fans wondering:
Boston can’t sign Malik Fitts, Juwan Morgan or Nik Stauskas. They are restricted from signing any of those three players for this season, unless they go to another new team and then are waived from there.
Basically, forget them coming back. – 4:11 PM

Keith Smith: Just as a note: If the Suns choose to match the Pacers offer sheet for Deandre Ayton, the Pacers can’t then reverse the waivers of the players they let go. If you renounce free agents, you can reverse those renouncements if an offer sheet is matched. You can’t reverse waivers. -via Twitter @KeithSmithNBA / July 14, 2022
The Pacers and Celtics announced their trade Saturday, sending veteran point guard Malcolm Brogdon from Indiana to Boston in exchange for a 2023 first-round pick and five players: Nik Stauskas, Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, former IU star Juwan Morgan and Malik Fitts. However, a league source told IndyStar on Sunday that the Pacers are waiting for Brogdon to pass a physical so the trade can become official and Nesmith can become eligible for Indiana’s Summer League team in Las Vegas. Nesmith attended the Pacers’ Summer League opener against Charlotte on Friday and sat courtside at Thomas & Mack Center with his new teammates Jalen Smith, Tyrese Haliburton and Oshae Brissett. -via Indianapolis Star / July 11, 2022

Schedule of former Ohio State basketball players taking part in the NBA Summer League

In case you want to watch some former Buckeyes as they take part in the NBA Summer League. #GoBucks

The Ohio State basketball program has churned out a ton of young talent to the NBA over the last few years, but that seems to be slowly changing. As it does, you can begin keeping track of former Buckeye players taking part in the NBA Summer League.

This year’s crop includes former Ohio State players E.J. Liddell, Malaki Branham, Duane Washington Jr, and former Buckeye turned Wisconsin Badger, Micha Potter.

For all you NBA types, we thought we’d provide a schedule of when you can see each play in the event you are into that sort of thing, especially as you cheer on Liddell and Branham and how well they might both translate to the next level.

Here’s a look at the schedule for each player so that you can follow along.

Duane Washington to sign multi-year deal with Pacers

Congrats to Duane! #GoBucks

Former Ohio State guard Duane Washington Jr. continues to prove everyone wrong at the next level. He left OSU early and got highly criticized for it. He went undrafted in the 2021 NBA draft, and that seemed to cement everyone’s illusions of what he could do at the next level.

Washington banked the odds though, signed an undrafted free agent two-way contract agent deal, impressed in the NBA G-League, and earned playing time under the lights where he’s had some pretty impressive moments. He even set a franchise record for 3-pointers in a game last season.

His first contract was one where he had to earn playing time and could be sent back down to develop or released altogether, but now it appears as though Indiana is ready to go all-in on the former Ohio State shooter.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Pacers are ready to tender Washington a multi-year contract that should solidify his spot on the roster.

Washington did so well that he started in seven games this year for the Pacers and found his way into 46 games. He averaged 9.6 points, 1.8 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game on, all while shooting 39.4% from the floor.

Congrats to a former Buckeye. Keep proving them all wrong Duane.
