Commanders make roster move for NFC championship game

Commanders make roster moves ahead of NFC title game.

It’s Saturday, and it’s time for the weekly Washington Commanders’ roster move.

This afternoon, the Commanders, having declared defensive tackle Daron Payne out against the Eagles due to an injured finger and knee, elevated DT Carl Davis to the active roster for Sunday’s NFC championship contest against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Payne played in all 17 regular-season games and the playoff wins over the Bucs and Lions. However, he was slowed by injuries, including a finger injury against the Bucs and an aggravating knee injury against the Lions.

Diehard Commanders fans will recall that Davis was brought up to the 53-man roster three times this season, appearing in three games (Titans, Saints, Eagles).

Davis, each time he was elevated previously to the roster, was taking the place of former second-round choice and Alabama Crimson Tide tackle Phidarian Mathis. The Commanders then released Mathis when fellow DT Jon Allen returned from his partially torn pectoral muscle.

The Commanders are also elevating to the active roster for the third consecutive game, CB Kevon Seymour. The previous two games meant CB Michael Davis, who had been signed as a free agent in March, was inactive. So look for this move again this week.

With Payne out against the Eagles, look for Davis to be active and get some reps at defensive tackle in a rotation involving Jon Allen, Johnny Newton, and Sheldon Day.

Commanders’ roster moves ahead of Wild Card game vs. Bucs

What does this mean for Jamison Crowder’s status?

It’s Saturday, and yes, the Commanders made a roster move.

Actually, they made two moves on the eve of their first NFC playoff game since the 2020 season when they lost to the Tampa Bay Bucs in the opening round.

Saturday, the Commanders elevated WR Chris Moore and CB Kevon Seymour from the practice squad.

This signals us that Jamison Crowder, who recently injured a hamstring, may not be ready to go Sunday against the Bucs. This is unfortunate because Crowder has played well since returning from the injured reserve after injuring a calf earlier in the season.

Crowder displayed an ability, a veteran’s knowledge, to get open down in the red zone when he caught two touchdowns against the Eagles. He has also been averaging 10.1 yards on his punt returns.

The team, in recent weeks, signed WR K.J. Osborn, and he has seen some action on offense as well as special teams.

Moore, 31, has played five games for the Cardinals this season, including against the Commanders on September 29, when Washington defeated Arizona 42-14. Although he has not received a reception this season, he has kickoff return experience, having returned 50 in his career.

Seymour’s elevation “could” mean the Commanders have reached the point where they may want to play Seymour over CB Michael Davis, who is 30.

Of note, the Commanders elevated DT Carl Davis three consecutive games but have not since Jonathan Allen’s return. Last week they elevated T Bobby Hart and DB Bobby Price, but apparently thought differently for this game against the Bucs.

Commanders releasing Mathis further highlights Ron Rivera’s ineptitude

On Saturday, the Commanders released another high Ron Rivera draft pick.

Saturday brought another reminder of just how ineffective Ron Rivera was as an NFL general manager.

Commanders Wire wanted sincerely to give Rivera the benefit of the doubt often when it came to personnel moves while Dan Snyder was still the team’s owner. However, after some time, evidence showed Snyder was less active than he had been in previous seasons.

The Commanders’ release of DT Phidarian Mathis on Saturday was predictable. It was predictable not in isolation but because it marked yet another example of Ron Rivera’s utter futility as a general manager.

In his four seasons, Rivera not only failed to produce a winning record, but his free agent acquisitions and draft selections are glaring examples of his deficiencies as a talent evaluator and a team roster constructor.

Anyone following the Commanders knows that Mathis has been released. We all noticed that despite being healthy, Mathis has been declared “inactive” for the last three games.

Ask yourself, “How many Commanders fans even remember the name of the defensive tackle elevated from the practice squad in substitution for Mathis in the last three weeks?” I guarantee you 50 percent wouldn’t come up with the name Carl Davis.

Davis is a journeyman at age 32, and the Commanders still have not signed him to the active roster. Yet, GM Adam Peters and HC Dan Quinn chose him for three consecutive weeks over Mathis.

Mathis being released raises the question if a contender needing some defensive tackle depth will now sign Mathis to their active roster. If not, will the Commanders sign Mathis to their practice squad?

As the 2024 regular season winds down, Rivera made 33 draft selections in his four seasons (2020-23). Only G Sam Cosmi, RB Brian Robinson, and S Quan Martin are starters, and only ten are still on the active roster.

You think about that.

Commanders roster moves: Another high Ron Rivera draft pick released

Jonathan Allen is officially back. Another high draft pick is gone.

It’s Saturday, and the Washington Commanders have made a few roster moves.

First, they have activated Jonathan Allen from the injured reserve list. Allen partially tore a pectoral muscle back in a Week 6 contest against the Ravens and was expected to be out the remainder of the season.

Secondly, the Commanders have waived defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis. Washington drafted Mathis in the 2022 NFL draft (No. 47 overall).

Thirdly, the Commanders have elevated two players, cornerback Kevon Seymour and wide receiver Brycen Tremayne, from their practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Falcons.

Seymour was a sixth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills out of USC in 2016, appearing in 64 games, starting seven prior to being signed by Washington in September. However, the NFL recently suspended Seymour for six games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy.

Tremayne was undrafted out of Stanford and signed by Washington in 2023. He did not appear in a game in 2023 and was elevated once this season for the Browns game on October 6.

Allen is a welcome addition to the team, having been a defensive line anchor for eight seasons. Allen can now contribute to a team with a winning record for the first time in his career since joining Washington in the 2017 draft.

Sadly, Mathis is another reminder of how poorly former GM/HC Ron Rivera drafted. Mathis was immediately declared to be an example of Rivera again reaching in the draft because nearly all drafting services had Mathis to be drafted in rounds three or four.

Mathis had been a healthy scratch, made inactive in the last three games, while defensive tackle Carl Davis was elevated each game to play instead of Mathis.

Commanders make one roster move for Eagles’ game

The Commanders make roster move ahead of Sunday’s game vs. Eagles.

As has become customary, the Washington Commanders made a roster move Saturday.

This time, in preparation for their Week 16 NFC East showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Commanders made two decisions ahead of tomorrow’s game at Northwest Stadium in Landover.

The roster move was DT Carl Davis’s elevation to the active roster from the practice squad. This is the third consecutive game the Commanders have elevated Davis from the practice squad. The two previous times, he played against the Titans and Saints.

In the last two games with Davis elevated to the roster, DT Phidarian Mathis has been a healthy scratch, being declared inactive both times. In the next week, the Commanders will need to determine if they will sign Davis to the roster or possibly bring Jonathan Allen back from the injured reserve list. Either could also involve a move with Mathis.

Secondly, the Commanders have decided that Zane Gonzalez will be the kicker on Sunday. The team did not elevate fellow kicker Greg Joseph, who kicked in the Saints game while Gonzalez was nursing his injured foot.

Gonzalez had already been signed to the 53-man roster following the Titans game, therefore, though the Commanders have made the decision to go with Gonzalez as their kicker against the Eagles, no actual roster move was made, other than the decision to have Joseph remain on the practice squad.

Commanders need more from DT Daron Payne

With Jonathan Allen out, Commanders need Daron Payne more than ever.

Daron Payne is not having one of his better seasons.

The former Alabama defensive tackle taken first round in the 2018 NFL draft had his biggest season in 2021, earned himself a big contract and hasn’t been as productive this season.

Payne thus far, through six games played, has contributed eight tackles (6 solo, 2 Assists). However, Payne has only produced two QB hits, 0.5 QB sacks, and zero tackles for a loss.

On Thursday, before the media, defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. was asked about last Sunday’s game in which Payne did not record a defensive statistic.

“Sometimes that’s going to happen. I’m not going to just dive into stats totally. He’s given us what we want. For the run game, alright, they ran for yards. It wasn’t because of him, alright. It was some other issues that they ran for. So, he’s one of our leaders and he’s doing the things that he needs to do.”

On Sunday, against the Panthers, Payne will have to begin playing without long-time partner Jonathan Allen, also from Alabama. Allen tore a pectoral muscle against the Ravens last week, requiring surgery. Allen will miss the remainder of 2024.

Thus, Payne will now start alongside rookie Johnny Newton (Illinois). Not only will Newton receive more snaps, but also reserve tackle Phidarian Mathis will be called upon more often. DT Sheldon Day was elevated to the active roster and DT Jalyn Holmes was signed. The Commanders also signed DT Carl Davis to the practice squad.

Commanders sign a defensive tackle to practice squad

The Commanders make a move after losing Jonathan Allen for the season.

Adam Peters didn’t take long. On Tuesday, the Commanders general manager signed a defensive tackle.

In Sunday’s loss to the Ravens, eight-year veteran Jonathan Allen tore a pectoral muscle, which requires surgery and will miss the rest of 2024. Consequently, the Commanders desperately need their present defensive tackles to step up big time.

According to Mike Garafolo, Peters has added one more defensive tackle to the team, signing Carl Davis to the practice squad.

Davis was with the Cowboys in 2023, so he is known by both Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. Davis is 32, so Peters is not looking to Davis for a long-term solution but is adding him for this season if he is needed.

At 6-foot-5, 335 pounds, he is more of a run-stopping tackle like Phidarian Mathis (6-4, 312). In the 2015 NFL draft, the Ravens selected Davis 90th overall (round 3) out of Iowa.

Understand, this is only a depth signing for this season. Peters does not have some vision of Davis at this stage of his life/career coming in and being a Dave Butz or Darryl Grant.

Davis has appeared in 75 games in his eight NFL seasons, starting 19. He has played for the Ravens (2015-17), Browns (2018), Colts (2019), Jaguars (2019), Patriots (2020-22), and Cowboys (2023).

Ben Standig reported that the Commanders also worked out defensive tackles Deadrin Senat and Jonathan Marshall, electing to sign Davis. Senat (age 30) was the Falcons’ 2018 90th overall selection. He has played in 37 games for the Falcons and Buccaneers, starting two. Marshall (age 27) was drafted 207th by the Jets in 2021 and has appeared in four games.
