Daniel Jeremiah: Dre’Mont Jones a ‘home run signing’ for Seahawks

Having Jones not only helps give a solution to the Seahawks’ biggest weakness, it also allows them flexibility at the No. 5 overall pick.

The Seattle Seahawks bucked their usual trend of avoiding the first wave of free agency in a big way this year. They made quite a splash by signing former Broncos defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones to a three-year deal worth $51 million. It’s a move to signal to the 12th Man the team realizes all too well how poor their defensive line was last year, and they wasted little time doing what they could to improve it.

It’s also been one of the more widely praised free agency moves this offseason, and NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah can’t stop singing Seattle’s praises. You can listen to a portion of Jeremiah’s comments below.

What sticks out to Jeremiah is discussing how teams ideally don’t want to go into the draft with a glaring need they must address before focusing on any other position. Having Jones not only helps give a solution to the Seahawks’ biggest weakness, it also allows them flexibility at the No. 5 overall pick.

Without Jones, Seattle might have been forced to select Georgia DT Jalen Carter. While the Seahawks still may pick this young man, they are no longer trapped to this possibility. This may be a good thing, as Carter’s red flags continue to mount.

Seahawks up 4 spots in NFL power rankings after 1st wave of free agency

The Seattle Seahawks climbed up four spots to No. 14 in the latest NFL power rankings for their moves made in the first wave of free agency.

The Seattle Seahawks must have done a thing or two correctly during the first wave of free agency, causing the team to climb a whopping four spots up to No. 14 overall in the latest NFL power rankings.

After a five-week hiatus, Around The NFL Podcast Co-Host Dan Hanzus took another look around the league to put together his free-agency frenzy edition and had the following to say about Seattle.

“The Seahawks were one of the biggest surprises in the NFL last season,” Hanzus writes. “They’ve started the new league year by making sensible moves to fortify the roster. The team addressed perhaps its most pressing need on defense with a big contract for former Broncos defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones, then added help at linebacker with ex-Steeler Devin Bush amid whispers of a potential Bobby Wagner reunion.

“Geno Smith returns on a well-earned new three-year deal — does the move preclude Seattle from taking a quarterback with the fifth overall pick?” Hanzus continues. “We wouldn’t think so. The Seahawks are an interesting team to watch in a top-heavy NFC.”

Poona Ford ranks among best of free agent defensive tackles still available

Seattle Seahawks Poona Ford is likely the best free-agent defensive tackle still available after the first wave of free agency wraps up.

The Seattle Seahawks added a couple of new players to their defensive line, including Dre’Mont Jones and former Hawk Jarran Reed, but have yet to sign one of their own biggest contributors as of late, defensive tackle Poona Ford.

CBS Sports has Ford ranked as the best free-agent defensive tackle still available after the first week of the new league year.

“Surprising Ford is still on the market as the second wave of free agency approaches,” writes Jeff Kerr. “The 27-year-old has 83 quarterback pressures across the last three seasons, since 2020, the most on the Seattle Seahawks in that span. Any team who could use a solid rotational piece along the interior of the defensive line should give him a call. ”

Ford may not be available that much longer if the reports of Buffalo’s interest ring true. More on that story can be found here.

Seahawks DL Dre’mont Jones: ‘I’m here to be a solution, not a problem’

Seattle Seahawks new defensive lineman, former Denver Broncos Dre’mont Jones, said he’s a very hungry player who takes every play seriously.

The Seattle Seahawks started free agency with a bang, signing former Denver Broncos defensive lineman Dre’mont Jones to the squad. One of the most attractive free-agent options on the market, Jones is now locked up on a three-year deal worth $51 million.

“It seems like the best fit for me,” Jones said via the Seahawks website on Thursday. “They have a promising team, a lot of good pieces offensively and defensively. It just seems like the right place to make a new start, have a new beginning.”

Jones was selected by the Broncos in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft out of Ohio State.  Over his career of 56 games played, he has logged 124 total tackles, 22 sacks, 6 passes defensed and one interception.

“I’m definitely a hungry player,” Jones explained. “I’m here to be a solution, not a problem. All my life I’ve been an underdog in a way, always kind of counted out in a way. So that’s what motivates me, that’s what drives me.

“Every play, every game, I take it very seriously.”

5 takeaways from Seahawks GM John Schneider’s radio interview

Seahawks general manager John Schneider went on ESPN 710 radio in Seattle on Thursday afternoon and answered a number of free agency related questions, including about their most-recent signings.

Here are five takeaways from that conversation.

Seattle Seahawks earn an A grade for early free-agency moves so far

Free agency is just now underway and already the Seattle Seahawks have earned themselves an A grade from CBS Sports for their early moves.

Free agency officially kicked off on Wednesday and the Seattle Seahawks have already earned themselves an A grade from CBS Sports for their early offseason moves.

Seattle locked down quarterback Geno Smith ahead of the new league year and made a big splash Monday, agreeing to terms with former Broncos defensive tackle Dre’mont Jones.

“Not to mention Seattle also took another key asset from the Broncos in defensive end Dre’Mont Jones, whom they signed on a three-year deal for $51.5 million on Monday, according to NFL Media,” writes Garrett Podell. “The 26-year-old has recorded a minimum of 5.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss in every season since 2020 after shifting to the defensive end spot from defensive tackle after his rookie year in 2019. Last season, Jones had a career year with 6.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss.

“The Seahawks are a good draft away from becoming a long-term contender in the NFC. ”

The Seahawks also lured back former Packers defensive tackle Jarran Reed for another stint in Seattle.

Free agency has just gotten underway and coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider likely aren’t finished just yet.

NFL Free Agency: Seahawks bring back DT Jarran Reed

The Seahawks are clearly focused on turning their d-line from a liability to lethality.

The Seattle Seahawks are welcoming an old face back to the team. On Tuesday afternoon it was reported the Seahawks were reuniting with former defensive tackle Jarran Reed, who is returning to the Emerald City on a new two-year contract.

Originally a second round pick by Seattle in the 2016 NFL Draft, Reed has seen the most success in his career wearing the action green and college navy of the Seahawks. Reed finally broke out during the 2018 campaign when he recorded 10.5 sacks, making him the third defensive tackle in Seattle history – alongside Cortez Kennedy and John Randle – to accomplish such a feat.

Reed was released during the 2021 offseason and signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Following the expiration of that deal, he signed another one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers. However, his sack totals in both Kansas City and Green Bay combined never matched even his last year in Seattle.

The Seahawks are clearly on the warpath to rebuild their defensive line, which was undoubtably their Achilles Heel last year. Seattle made a splash with signing Dre’Mont Jones from the Broncos, and potentially have an opportunity to draft top defensive line prospect Jalen Carter with the No. 5 pick this year.

The defensive line of the Seahawks could go from liability to lethality in short order.

Former Ohio State defensive lineman gets the bag in NFL free agency

Former Ohio State defensive lineman gets the bag in NFL free agency #GoBucks

NFL free agency has kicked off and it is always fun to monitor which former Ohio state football stars get paid.

The first day of this free agency period brought two memorable names. We already covered the signing of Vonn Bell to the Carolina Panthers, but another former Buckeye defensive star is going from the AFC to the NFC. Dre’Mont Jones goes from the Denver Broncos to the Seattle Seahawks.

The latest reports indicate Jones is signing a three-year deal for $52.53 million dollars. In the front-loaded deal, Jones receives $23.5 million during his first season and the remaining $35.02 million over the course of his next two seasons.

Jones was an absolute stud at Ohio State. He earned freshman All-American honors and twice earned All-Big Ten status before being drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos, with whom he has been a very good defensive tackle.

We’ll continue to track former Ohio State players as they sign deals during the NFL’s free agency season.
