UNC QB Drake Maye takes shot at NC State

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye took a bit of a shot at N.C. State during Tuesday’s press conference.

The UNC football program is coming off the bye week and face a tough test against Notre Dame here in Week 4 as they look to go 4-0 on the early season.

But as UNC is prepping for this game, quarterback [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] may have provided some bulletin board material for a future opponent.

Maye met the media for his weekly press conference to talk the Notre Dame matchup. During the interview, Maye was asked about Sam Howell’s success at the program and staying in-state to come to North Carolina. He offered up a serious and true answer but also took a shot at NC State in the process.

Inside Carolina’s Ross Martin has the video and quote below:

That’s certainly going to draw some attention here this week.

Maye grew up in North Carolina and has been a Tar Heel fan through and through. His father, Mark, starred as a quarterback, and his brother, Luke, won a national championship with the basketball program. So he has Carolina Blue in his blood and knows what the rivalry with NC State means to him and the fans.

Now, Drake is creating his own legacy here at UNC and can take a step forward with a big win over Notre Dame on Saturday.

The Tar Heels and Wolfpack meet in Chapel Hill the Friday after Thanksgiving and it should be an interesting one..

UNC QB Drake Maye among the top impact players in CFB

Drake Maye hit the ground running as the starting QB in 2022, but where does he rank among CFB’s best?

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye was in a battle for the starting job after Sam Howell left for the NFL following last season. Maye was able to take firm control of the job and so far he hasn’t looked back.

Through Week 3, Maye leads the nation in touchdown passes along with C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and Davis Brin of Tulsa. Given the quick success of North Carolina’s newest quarterback, Tar Heels took a look at where he ranks among college football’s most impactful players.

On3 listed Maye among the top 20 players but where does he land? Check out the top 20 of the On3 impact 300 list.

Tale of the Tape: Starting Quarterbacks – Drew Pyne vs. Drake Maye

Pyne might be out of his league with this matchup.

Add another to what’s been a series of mismatches at quarterback for Notre Dame this season. One full game wasn’t enough for [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] to catch up to what [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] did before the injury he suffered late against Marshall knocked him out for the year. Unless Pyne suddenly becomes amazing, you really have to start wondering if there is any chance he’ll be better than the opposing quarterback in any game this season. Navy perhaps?

The Tar Heels have Drake Maye as their quarterback, and holy smokes. How is this 19-year-old doing all of this already in his first season taking over for Sam Howell? Maybe the best passer in North Carolina history taught him everything he needs to know about playing at the college level because these numbers make it look like Howell never left. Still, Howell failed to beat Notre Dame in his two opportunities, so maybe this isn’t the biggest thing for the Irish to worry about.

UNC offensive keys to the game vs Notre Dame

A look at the offensive keys to the game for the UNC football program as it goes up against Notre Dame this weekend.

The UNC football program takes on its biggest matchup of the season on Saturday as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish come to Chapel Hill.

While the matchup has lost a bit of its luster due to the Irish’s slow start this season — sitting at just 1-2 — it’s still a huge game for the Tar Heels who look to build on a 3-0 start.

UNC quarterback Drake Maye has been fantastic all season and looks to continue the trend this weekend.

Overall, the North Carolina offense has been difficult to stop by all three opponents this season and with Josh Downs and Antoine Green getting healthy and practicing this week, there could be more firepower on the way.

Either way, there a few things UNC needs to do in order to come away with a win on Saturday.

Here are the offensive keys to the game for UNC against Notre Dame.

Drake Maye climbing national QB rankings

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye earned some national recognition after another big performance in Week 2 as the Tar Heels are 3-0.

Going into the 2022 season, many thought UNC would see a dropoff at the quarterback position following the departure of Sam Howell to the NFL. But that hasn’t been the case through three games this season with [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] leading the charge for what has been a high-powered offense.

Through three games, in which UNC is 3-0, Maye has completed 74.2% of his passes for 930 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He’s added 26 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown, leading the charge for the Tar Heels’ offense.

And now he’s starting to earn some national recognition as well.

Following Week 2, Maye climbed Tom Fornelli’s QB rankings on CBS Sports going from unranked to No. 4 on the list:

That breeze you felt was Maye flying up NFL Draft boards. I was concerned about how North Carolina would replace Sam Howell, but it turns out the Tar Heels have upgraded. Maye is balling. He’s thrown 11 touchdowns and rushed for another, and his team has needed every single one of them because that North Carolina defense is cheeks. (NR)

While UNC’s defense has been bad this season, Maye has been terrific and a big reason why the Tar Heels are 3-0.

The schedule gets tougher for UNC out of the bye week as a date with Notre Dame looms in Week 4 but if Maye can continue his strong play, he can pick up more national recognition and awards.

5 things to watch for in UNC football vs Georgia State matchup

As North Carolina is set to hit the road against Georgia State, we take a look at a few key things you should know before you watch.

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ unblemished record is on the line this Saturday against Georgia State.

UNC has had a fruitful season start, with their offense clicking on all cylinders. This Saturday should look no different as they will travel to Atlanta to take on the 0-1 Panthers, a vital game for the team before their most challenging game on the schedule against Notre Dame in two weeks.

After escaping week two with a 63-61 win over Appalachian State, UNC will have a chance to work on their defense against a less offensive Panthers team. If North Carolina wants a shot against Notre Dame, they will need to fix their defense, making this week’s three match-up vital for the Tar Heels.

This game is the second time UNC will take on Georgia State in its program history, constraining the Panthers 59-17 last season. This game should have an identical outcome, with quarterback Drake Maye leading the charge for North Carolina.

Now with the narrative of cannot win on the road in the past, the only thing in UNC’s way of a dominating win is their shaky defense.

As UNC prepares to battle the Panthers, we look at five things to look out for in the Saturday matchup.

UNC football vs. Georiga State: Game preview, info, prediction and more

We take a look at what you need to know for the UNC football program’s matchup against Georgia State this Saturday.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will hit the road to take on Georgia State this weekend as the Tar Heels hope to move to 3-0 on the early season.  It’s the second-straight road game for the Tar Heels early on and another chance to hopefully fix their defense and get things straight.

After their 63-61 nail-biting win against Appalachian State, UNC is favored by 7.5  on the road as this won’t be an easy task as some may think.

North Carolina’s passing attack is their most vital weapon heading into this game, with quarterback [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] already having nine passing touchdowns through two games.

This game is UNC’s second time playing the Panthers, beating them last season 59-17 at home. The player to stop on Georgia State is sixth-year running back James Williams.

Williams uses his experience and speed to burst through holes, finishing with 76-yards on 13 carries last weekend. Georgia State barely moved the ball in the air with only 29 passing attempts compared to their 40 rushings tries. An aggressive attack against the run should limit the Panther’s offense in a significant way, giving UNC a decent margin of victory.

UNC offensive keys to the game vs Georgia State

The main offensive keys to the game vs Georgia State for the UNC football program this weekend.

After a 2-0 start to the 2022 season, the UNC football program heads on the road once again, this time traveling to Georgia State.

After a high-scoring affair against Appalachian State in week one, the Tar Heels have now put up 56 points and 63 points in back-to-back weeks.

Quarterback [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] leads the nation in passing yards (646) and touchdowns (9). He also has yet to throw an interception.

This week, however, UNC head coach Mack Brown said his offensive unit wasn’t ‘as sharp’ as usual.

With a matchup against Georgia State on the docket, here are the keys to the game for the North Carolina offense this Saturday.

UNC quarterback Drake Maye earns national recognition

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye has earned some national recognition after his big game in the win over Appalachian State.

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye is off to a hot start this season as the Tar Heels are 2-0 with wins over FAMU and Appalachian State. In both of those games, Maye has played well and currently leads all Division I quarterbacks in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

In Saturday’s win over App State, he threw for 352 yards and 4 touchdowns while adding another rushing touchdown. He was sharp in the win and a big reason why the Tar Heels were able to escape. For his efforts, he was named as the ACC Quarterback of the Week and Rookie of the Week. And now, he’s earning national honors as well.

Maye was named the Maxwell Football Player of the Week this week:

This is the first time Maye has won the honor and the way he’s playing, it may not be the last.

Despite UNC’s defense really struggling, the offense looks good and can keep them in games this season. Now the only question remains is if Maye can keep this up as the competition gets tougher.

For his performance on Saturday, Maye has earned some honors by the Atlantic Coast Conference.
