Analyst compares Drake Maye to former Oregon star

ESPN analyst David Pollack believes UNC football quarterback Drake Maye is comparable to Justin Herbert.

As the 2022 college football season rolls on, UNC quarterback Drake Maye continues to impress as the Tar Heels are now 8-1 overall and 5-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Through 9 games, Maye has thrown for 2,964 yards, 31 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions. He’s added 439 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns as well, another dynamic to his game.

With Maye continuing to impress and play well, the national media is starting to take notice to this as well. And on Saturday, before UNC’s win over Virginia, ESPN’s David Pollack had more praise for Maye.

On College GameDay, Pollack spoke highly on Maye and even compared him to former Oregon Star and current NFL quarterback Justin Herbert:

Pollack was referring to the style of play and that’s a great compliment for Maye to have. Herbert had a successful career at Oregon before moving to the NFL where he was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and has established himself as one of the best young quarterbacks in the game.

That’s a hell of a comparison.

Maye isn’t eligible to come out until the 2024 NFL draft which will also have USC’s Caleb Williams in that draft. But right now, Maye is making a strong case to be QB1 in that class with all the tools he has.

FTW VIBE CHECK: Petty Lane is in our ears and in our eyes

TCU in the CFP rankings, Jimbo Fisher’s buyout and more.

Welcome back to VIBE CHECK, where we monitor and assess the weekly pulse of college football. Each week, we grade a handful of teams based on their on-field performance, off-field shenanigans (good and bad!), message board chatter, and more. This is very (read: not at all) scientific and should be taken very (read: not at all) seriously.

We’re heading into Week 10 of the season, highlighted by a monster matchup between No. 1 Tennessee and No. 3 Georgia. Can Hendon Hooker and the Vols keep the good vibes going? Will Georgia stay undefeated?

This week, we take a look at more SEC drama, a QB that should be getting more attention nationally, and more. Let’s get to it.

Drake Maye, Audric Estime and Hendon Hooker headline the Maxwell Award’s weekly honor roll

Seven players make the Maxwell Award’s weekly honor roll.

What a week it was in college football, with some tremendous performances on the offensive side of the ball, led by North Carolina’s Drake Maye.

Maye was dropping dimes last weekend for North Carolina (that’s what the kids still say, right?) in an impressive win over Pittsburgh. The performance from Maye led the North Carolina quarterback to being named the Maxwell Award Player of the Week.

It was also a strong weekend from the likes of Hendon Hooker (Tennessee) and Audric Estime (Notre Dame).

The Maxwell Football Club awards the Maxwell Award, annually given to the nation’s top college football player. They also hand out the Chuck Bednarik Award for the top defensive player in college football.

Every March, the club hosts an annual awards gala at the Harrah’s in Atlantic City, N.J.

Scroll down to find out what seven players made the weekly honor roll this week from the Maxwell Award!

Drake Maye named a Maxwell Award Semi-Finalist

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye was named a Maxwell Award Semi-Finalist on Tuesday, one of 20 members on the list.

UNC football star quarterback [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] continues to have a phenomenal freshman season — highlighted by finding his name on many weekly awards. This week, he added to that list.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Maye was a semi-finalist for the Maxwell Award — given to the top player in college at the end of the year.

Maye was one of 20 members and nine quarterbacks on the list. He is also one of two ACC players, alongside Pitt running back Israel Abanikanda.

Maye is coming off of a 388-yard and five-touchdown game in a win against Pitt, where he also picked up the Maxwell Player of the Week honor for his performance. He has been the biggest reason for the Tar Heels ranking of No. 17 in the AP Top 25.

Maye has thrown for 2,671 yards and 29 touchdowns to just three interceptions this season. He has also rushed for a team-high 439 yards and three touchdowns. He has had three or more passing touchdowns in six of the eight games this season and four or more in four games.

His touchdowns rank first in the country, quarterback rating ranks third and passing yards rank fourth.

Depending on a few results, North Carolina could wrap up the ACC Coastal Division this week with a win over Virginia.

UNC quarterback Drake Maye is ranked ahead of Heisman Trophy candidates Hendon Hooker and Bryce Young by Pro Football Focus.

UNC quarterback [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] continues to make headlines for his play here in the 2022 season. And rightfully so.

After the game, the national media started to take notice of Maye and his performance as he’s now up to 2,671 passing yards and 29 passing touchdowns. He’s also added 439 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns to his stats as well.

While Maye is still considered a to behind some other quarterbacks in the Heisman Trophy race, Pro Football Focus had high praise for the quarterback.

Here is how PFF ranked the top 3 quarterbacks in the power five based on grades this season. And the two names that Maye is ahead of are pretty damn good.

Drake Maye, Antoine Green win win ACC player of week awards

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye and wide receiver Antoine Green were honored by the ACC after a big Week 9 game vs. PItt.

After a dominating performance on Saturday night against Pitt, a pair of UNC football players are earning Atlantic Coast Conference honors.

Quarterback Drake Maye and wide receiver Antoine Green were honored by the conference on Monday afternoon. Maye was named the Quarterback of the Week while Green was named the Wide Receiver of the Week.

Drake Maye moves past Ronald Curry for career touchdown passes

UNC quarterback Drake Maye makes history in the 42-24 win over Pitt, surpassing former Tar Heel Ronald Curry on career touchdown passes.

Another game means more opportunity for quarterback [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag] to build his North Carolina legacy with a historical moment in the 42-24 win over Pitt.

Maye tied former Tar Heel Ronald Curry for career touchdown passes(28), then later in the game broke the tie by tossing two more touchdowns. Curry played at North Carolina from 1998 to 2001, then got drafted to the National Football League with the 235 overall pick by the Oakland Raiders.

The red-shirt freshman has been worth the hype this season, picking up where Sam Howell left off. Maye has thrown for 2671 passing yards and leads the NCAA in touchdowns(29)with only three interceptions.

Mayes’ hot start has UNC’s offense looking explosive, leading the NCAA in total yards (3110). North Carolina is 7-1, and matched with the consistent play of Maye, a shot at a Heisman award could be on the horizon.

PHOTOS: UNC takes down Pitt in ACC showdown

We have the best photos from Saturday’s UNC football win over Pitt in Chapel Hill.

The UNC football program got the best of Pitt in Saturday’s Atlantic Coast Conference showdown in Chapel Hill. The 42-24 win put the Tar Heels at 7-1 overall and 4-0 in ACC play.

From here, the Tar Heels control their own destiny with just four conference games left. They have a two-game lead in the division with the tiebreaker over Duke, Miami, Virginia Tech, and now Pitt. They do have games left against Virginia and Georgia Tech, as well as cross-conference games against Wake Forest and NC State.

But we don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves here and enjoy this victory just a bit more. Because it was a sweet one backed by the play of Drake Maye.

Here are some of the best photos from Saturday’s game in Chapel Hill.

How Twitter reacted to UNC QB Drake Maye’s performance vs. Pitt

The rest of the nation is starting to recognize just how good UNC football quarterback Drake Maye is.

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye continues to impress in his first season as the starter for the Tar Heels. And Saturday night was the latest stand-out performance for the redshirt freshman.

Maye finished Saturday’s win over Pitt completing 34 of his 44 attempts for 388 yards and 5 touchdown passes. He didn’t throw an interception or commit a fumble, leading a big second-half charge for the Tar Heels in the win.

The quarterback was fantastic once again for UNC as the crowd gave him Heisman chants with the clock running out. And they weren’t the only ones singing the praise of Maye following the game.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Maye’s performance as the national media is starting to take more notice:

UNC QB Drake Maye continues to climb ACC freshman TD list

UNC football quarterback Drake Maye continues to climb the ACC freshman passing touchdown leaderboard.

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye continued his impressive season for the Tar Heels on Saturday night and is climbing an Atlantic Coast Conference leaderboard in the process.

With his five-touchdown performance on Saturday night, Maye now has 29 passing touchdowns on the year. That’s good for the fourth most all-time by a freshman in ACC history per the conference. Maye is doing it in his redshirt freshman season, after winning the job over Jacolby Criswell in the offseason.

Former UNC quarterback Sam Howell holds the record with 38 passing touchdowns as a freshman, beating out Trevor Lawrence who had 30 for Clemson.

The way that Maye is playing right now, he should eclipse the record barring any injuries. And Howell would likely have no problem with that as the two are good friends.

Maye still has four regular season games plus potentially two more postseason games.
