Hawaii vs. UNLV: Why The Warriors Can Win, How To Watch, Odds, Prediction

The UNLV Rebels open up Mountain West play against the Hawaii Warriors on Saturday at home. UNLV has started strong this season but has lost the last four out of five Golden Pineapple games.

Execute the quick passing game

Both quarterbacks for the Rebels, Doug Brumfield and Jayden Maiava, do a great job quickly getting the ball out of their hands. Getting the ball out fast does not allow the pass rush to be effective and could serve as an extension to the running game. Look for the Rebels to get the ball into the hands of Ricky White, then with the Go-Go offense.

Running the ball

Both Vincent Davis Jr. and Jai’Den Thomas have 2011 yards rushing, Thomas with seven rushing touchdowns. The Rebels have run the ball 159 times this season and passed 114 times. Running the ball wears the defense down and keeps the opposing offense off the field. Limiting the opposing team’s possession is always a good thing. The Rebels do an excellent job of converting on third downs with a 52.4 third conversion percentage.

Ability to force turnovers

The Rebels defense has forced nine turnovers so far this season, but they also have given up a lot of big plays this season; they must keep that under wraps Saturday. But their ability to force turnovers can create extra opportunities for their offense. Hawaii will look to pass the ball down the field, so there will be plays to be made for the Rebels’ defense.

Prediction

UNLV has been playing well this season, but Hawaii can put up points if UNLV is not careful. But the Rebels will score points and force a couple of turnovers to take home the Victory.

UNLV 38-21

Players to Watch For UNLV Rebels Offense

Barry Odom hired Brennan Marion to be the UNLV Rebels, offensive coordinator. Marion is installing his “Go-Go Offense,”

New UNLV Rebels head football coach Barry Odom first hired Bobby Petrino to be Rebels offensive coordinator. After just 20 days at UNLV, Petrino took the Texas A&M offensive coordinator job.

Odom then pivoted to hire Brennan Marion to be the Rebels new offensive coordinator. Marion is installing his “Go-GO Offense,” built around a no-huddle running game and a vertical passing attack.

Quarterback Doug Brumfield

The Rebels have quarterback Doug Brumfield back from injury to run the offense. He has a strong arm and can make plays with his legs; Brumfield is the perfect quarterback for the go-go system; he needs to stay healthy.

Last season in ten games, Brumfield threw for 1,898 yards, with ten touchdowns and five interceptions on 64.6% passing. He also rushed for 261 yards and six touchdowns.

Brumfield led the Rebels to a 4-1 start last year before injuries derailed their season.

UNLV’s Offense Under Brennan Marion’s Leadership

Receiver Rickey White

All-conference receiver Ricky White returns; he caught 52 passes for 6222 yards and four touchdowns in his first season at UNLV. In Marion’s offense, White’s numbers should increase with many down-the-field targets.

White wants to stretch the field more and have more explosive plays. He averaged 12.5 yards per reception last year and said his YAC – yards after the catch – must improve.

Running Backs

With leading running back Aidan Robbins transferring to BYU, senior Courtney Reese returns. Reese averaged 7.3 yards per carry last year and ran four 370 yards.

At 5’8 165 pounds, he is unlikely to be the every down back. The Rebels hit the transfer portal and brought in junior Donavyn Lester from William & Mary and senior Vincent Davis from Pittsburgh.

Last year Lester ran for 533 yards and eight touchdowns, while Davis rushed for 274 yards and one touchdown. We will probably see a running back by committee in Las Vegas this year.

If Brumfield can remain healthy, the UNLV offense could be fun to watch because they have talent on offense. It just will take time to come together, but if it clicks, the fast pace could be killer to opposing defense.

How Twitter reacted to Notre Dame-UNLV: Rebels side

Rebels fans don’t seem too disappointed.

UNLV fans couldn’t have entered their team’s game with Notre Dame feeling good about their chances. They once again were missing quarterback Doug Brumfield, and this game also lacked top Rebels running back Aidan Robbins. Maybe the contest indeed would have been closer with those two in the game. That’s all we’re left to do as the Rebels lost, 44-21, to make it three consecutive defeats after three straight wins.

The good news for the Rebels is that pretty much every remaining opponent is below them in the Mountain West West Division, so they aren’t out of the running for the conference title yet. Still, it’s going to be a difficult road ahead if they don’t get the aforementioned offensive skills players back soon. Although Rebels fans will have plenty of time to wonder about that, the upsetting thing now is that their team lost. Here’s what some of them said on Twitter after the loss to the Irish:

Five keys for Notre Dame to defeat UNLV

What are your keys against UNLV?

We have come to a point in the season where the Irish need to play their A-game to win. They can no longer sleep-walk through a game and defeat a lesser opponent. It’s been a stark contrast from the Brian Kelly era but there is no doubt in my mind that Marcus Freeman won’t figure it out eventually. With that in mind, here are five keys the Irish get back into the win column on Saturday.

Tale of the Tape: Starting Quarterbacks – Drew Pyne vs. Brumfield/Friel

Quite a complicated QB picture.

Notre Dame and UNLV will have an interesting quarterback situation overall. [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] remains the starter for the Irish in spite of all the struggles he’s had to go through this season. Of course, the word “struggles” has to be used very loosely because there have been times, especially as the season has gone on, when Pyne is making real progress. Then, he has games in which he takes a step back, and those old doubts about him come creeping back.

The Rebels will come to South Bend not entirely sure who will be lining up under center for them. Doug Brumfield has been the main quarterback, but being in concussion protocol forced him to miss the Rebels’ last game against Air Force, and he remains day-to-day. The Rebels likely would turn to backup Cameron Friel if Brumfield can’t go. Still, it’s pretty obvious which quarterback gives the Rebels a better chance at victory.

Will Brumfield break out?

A one-time transfer portal candidate, Doug Brumfield returns to UNLV ready for the 2022 season. But can he return to lead the Rebels to relevance?

Headed into a Saturday afternoon showdown with the Idaho State Bengals, Rebels head coach Marcus Arroyo has remained steadfast in not naming a starting quarterback ahead of kickoff. He has also spoken often of how this 2022 squad needs to learn from last year’s campaign, a 2-10 record that included six one-score losses, but also two wins in its last four games.

Now, however, with the news a starter has been named, first broken by Joe Arrigo of Franchise Sports Media, UNLV’s QB1 merits a closer look.

A 6’-5, 215 lb. quarterback, Doug Brumfield is a dual-threat quarterback that can offer options to the Rebels offense. With running back Aidan Collins – an incoming transfer from Louisville – in the backfield, expect Brumfield to be featured in a renewed rushing attack for UNLV, with the potential to mix in passing plays and keep defenses guessing. Wide receivers Kyle Williams and Ricky White are expected to be Brumfield’s main targets, and the offense as a whole will need to show improvement if the Rebels are to remain competitive throughout the season.

Idaho State vs. UNLV: Game Preview, How to Watch, Odds, Prediction

Brumfield has shown potential to lead the Rebels, including a comeback in a heart-breaking loss to Eastern Washington in last year’s season opener. He has the ability to move the offense as a passer or a rusher, but fans and critics alike will be looking for an evolution in the Rebels offense. If Brumfield can find success leading an offense featuring more run-pass options or big plays out of play action, there’s a chance this offense with a more pro-style approach can bring the kind of success that surprises a few teams this season.

But before fans can claim success, there are questions for Brumfield and the offense overall. A struggling offense at times will need Brumfield to buy time to allow receivers to get downfield. Trying to make too many big plays can also put Brumfield himself at risk, and after missing several games last season due to injury, there will inevitably be concerns with durability.

It can be said that Doug Brumfield embodies a lot of the character that defines this UNLV squad; after a tough season last year, and an offseason filled with questions, this 2022 is an opportunity for Brumfield and the Rebels to find a few more wins together. Easier said than done, but many of the pieces are in place and the season is upon us. Doug Brumfield now has an opportunity to lead the Rebels to greater success as a team to be reckoned with in the Mountain West Conference.
