The Carolina Panthers have been running thin at the cornerback position for quite some time—and part of that has to do with the absence of a team leader.

While actually present for the start of mandatory minicamp, cornerback and captain Donte Jackson remained out of action on Tuesday. But, in a bit of encouraging news from head coach Frank Reich, the veteran defender is expected to be back by training camp.

“Yeah, he’s making great progress,” Reich told reporters. “We miss him out here, but he’s making great progress. He should be ready to go for training camp.”

Jackson sustained a torn Achilles tendon during last season’s Week 10 victory against the Atlanta Falcons. Prior to having his 2022 campaign cut short, the 27-year-old started nine games—amassing 35 combined tackles and a pair of interceptions.

The Panthers, additionally, are without fellow starter Jaycee Horn. Horn, who broke his wrist to close up his 2022, is currently healing from an ankle/foot injury he picked up during a personal workout this offseason.

He too, according to Reich, is expected to return for training camp.

Panthers CB coach Jonathan Cooley names players he’s been impressed by so far

Who is Panthers secondary/cornerbacks coach Jonathan Cooley impressed by so far? He answered that question on Thursday.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

When it comes to concern regarding depth for the Carolina Panthers, much of the attention has been aimed towards the team’s receiving corp. But it’s the opposite part of the personnel that may be the bigger issue.

New secondary/cornerbacks coach Jonathan Cooley spoke with reporters following Thursday’s installment of organized team activities. When asked about the state of the cornerbacks room, Cooley just played it cool.

“I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said. “We have veterans in there, we have young players that we’re very excited about. And then, just developing the backend depth—because corner is a position that is super important for us in the NFL, to exist how we wanna play on defense. So, just creating more versatility with those guys has been helpful. But I really like the guys we have in the room and I couldn’t be more excited about working with them.”

Outside of Jaycee Horn, the Panthers don’t have one sure thing at the position. Behind Horn at the top of the chart sits Donte Jackson, who is still recovering from an Achilles tear, as well as CJ Henderson and Keith Taylor Jr.—both of whom didn’t exactly shine when given the chance at the end of last season.

Nonetheless, Cooley seems encouraged by all four men at this point in the offseason.

“Most of them are relatively young,” he replied when asked of who’s impressed him most. “As far as the younger guys, Jaycee’s in his first contract. He’s done an excellent job for us. Keith Taylor’s done an excellent job with us—just getting better and better. D-Jax’s probably the older one and he’s been a great teammate. CJ Henderson’s done an excellent job in the role that he’s been able to play during this spring. So, we’re really excited about a lot of them.”

Panthers restructure contract of CB Donte Jackson

The Panthers announced that they’ve restructured the contract of CB Donte Jackson.

There are all kinds of paper being moving around at Bank of America Stadium this week.

In their latest move of the 2023 free agency period, the Carolina Panthers have restructured yet another contract. This time, the pact belongs to cornerback Donte Jackson.

Jackson signed his current deal almost a year to the day—inking a three-year, $35.1 million agreement back on March 19, 2022. The then 26-year-old was testing the waters of the open market at the time, only to head back to shore with the organization that set sail with him.

That voyage began in the second round of the 2018 draft, when the Panthers selected the speedy LSU defender with the 55th overall pick. He’s since, of course, played each of his five NFL seasons in Charlotte—amassing 244 combined tackles and 14 interceptions.

His latest season, unfortunately, ended early—as Jackson sustained a tear of his Achilles tendon during the team’s Week 10 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Thus far, the Panthers have restructured the contracts of right guard Austin Corbett, right tackle Taylor Moton, safety Xavier Woods and punter Johnny Hekker. They’ve also reworked the existing deals of linebacker Shaq Thompson and tight end Ian Thomas.

Carolina can save as much as $3.92 million off of Jackson’s adjustment.

WATCH: Panthers’ top 13 plays at the Week 13 bye

If you’re jonesing for some Carolina Panthers action during their bye week, we got you covered with their 13 best plays of the 2022 season (thus far).

We won’t be getting any action from the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. So, let’s look back at the very best that’s already gone down this year.

Here, at the Week 13 bye, are the top 13 plays of the Panthers’ 2022 season thus far.

Panthers CB Donte Jackson placed on IR, set for surgery

The Panthers have officially ended Donte Jackson’s 2022 season, placing the fifth-year veteran on IR.

The 2022 campaign is officially over for Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson.

On Monday afternoon, the team announced that they have placed Jackson on injured reserve—effectively ending his season. The fifth-year defender sustained a torn Achilles tendon in the Panthers’ 25-15 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night.

Earlier in the day, interim head coach Steve Wilks told reporters how tough of a loss this’ll be not only for the defense, but for the squad as a whole.

“Definitely disappointed,” he said. “But, ya know, guys gotta step up. Keith Taylor. Tae Hayes. All those guys—which they’ve been doing a great job given the opportunity to get in and play. So, it’s gonna be definitely hard to replace that leadership. But on the field, we gotta definitely step up and fill the void.”

Jackson, who’ll be undergoing surgery on his foot, has now been dealt season-ending setbacks in each of the past two seasons. He missed the final five games in 2021 due to a groin injury.

Panthers CB Keith Taylor Jr. key in absence of Donte Jackson

With Donte Jackson on the shelf for the remainder of the 2022 season, the Panthers may have a huge opportunity ahead for Keith Taylor Jr.

For the second time in as many years, Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson had his season cut short. We learned on Friday that the injury he sustained in the Week 10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons was a torn Achilles tendon, which has put him out for the remainder of 2022.

While it wasn’t exactly fantastic, Jackson was having a steady and serviceable campaign—posting a respectable 55.0 overall defensive grade from Pro Football Focus and a team-leading two interceptions. Beyond that play, the fifth-year veteran is just simply part of the heart and soul of the squad.

So, in his absence, multiple players will need to step up to keep the Panthers’ secondary together. CJ Henderson will, presumably, start next to Jaycee Horn with Myles Hartsfield and Tae Hayes likely seeing more work.

But one player who might be the key in patching the group together is second-year corner Keith Taylor Jr.—who has had some excellent moments as the “next man up” in his pro career.

This season, Taylor Jr. has been impressive in coverage, allowing 11 receptions over 106 opportunities. He has also been notably physical in tackling—popping off the screen more than a handful of times to secure a big hit or tackle.

The soon-to-be 24-year-old will have a major opportunity to build upon his solid NFL start—and it will be imperative he does so, as teams will be sure to test him early and often in his first few outing with Jackson on the shelf.

Panthers CB Donte Jackson out for remainder of 2022 season with torn Achilles

An MRI on Friday confirmed a torn Achilles tendon for Panthers CB Donte Jackson. He will now miss the remainder of the 2022 season.

Despite Thursday night’s feel-good win, the Carolina Panthers didn’t feel all too sure about the status of Donte Jackson. And now, we know why.

As announced by the team on Friday evening, Jackson will miss the remainder of the 2022 campaign after sustaining a torn Achilles tendon. An MRI taken today confirmed the unfortunate news for the fifth-year cornerback.

Jackson had been battling an ankle injury in the weeks leading up to this latest development. He made an early exit during Week 10’s 25-15 victory over the Atlanta Falcons and was seen wearing a boot in the locker room afterwards.

This now marks the second straight year in which the 27-year-old has dealt with a season-ending setback—as he missed the final five games of the 2021 slate with a groin injury.

Jackson is fresh off signing a three-year, $35.18 million pact this offseason. He recorded 35 total tackles and two interceptions—one of which went for a  30-yard touchdown run—over nine games in 2022.

Panthers Week 10 injury report: Donte Jackson questionable vs. Falcons

The Panthers returned an encouraging final injury report for their Week 10 matchup with the Falcons.

Quick turnarounds into Thursday nighters are often a tough ask for any team, especially when it comes to health. But the Carolina Panthers are pretty fortunate.

Ahead of tomorrow’s primetime clash with the Atlanta Falcons, the Panthers returned a relatively encouraging injury report on Friday. For starters (literally), defenders Brian Burns, Derrick Brown, Frankie Luvu and CJ Henderson were not noted with a game status—meaning they’re good to go for the NFC South battle after a careful few days.

Additionally, right tackle Taylor Moton, cornerback Donte Jackson, running back Chuba Hubbard and defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis were all full participants for the final practice session. They are each listed as questionable.

Here’s the final injury report for Week 10:

Panthers CB Donte Jackson active vs. Bengals in Week 9

Panthers CB Donte Jackson is active for Week 9’s matchup with the Bengals.

Over the past handful of weeks, Donte Jackson has taken a number of hits and has kept on going. And fortunately for the Carolina Panthers, he’ll keep on going in Week 9.

The fifth-year cornerback will be active for today’s matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals. Jackson, who is currently dealing with an ankle injury, did not practice on Tuesday or Wednesday and was listed as a limited participant on Friday.

Jackson’s presence will, obviously, be a much welcomed sight—even if the Bengals are without star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Quarterback Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati offense still have a pair of standout pass catchers in Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd handy this afternoon—so Carolina can use all the coverage they can get.

Here is, however, who won’t be in uniform for the Panthers today:

  • S Juston Burris
  • OT Larnel Coleman
  • WR Rashard Higgins
  • RB Chuba Hubbard
  • LB Arron Mosby
  • TE Stephen Sullivan

And for the Bengals:

  • G Jackson Carman
  • WR Ja’Marr Chase
  • CB Tre Flowers
  • CB Mike Hilton
  • OT D’Ante Smith
  • DT Josh Tupou
  • HB Trayveon Williams
