Western Conference GM: Lakers ‘could make a push for Donte DiVincenzo’

One executive thinks guard Donte DiVincenzo could be a target for the Lakers this summer.

The Los Angeles Lakers may not be far from being a legitimate championship-caliber team, but they will need one or two more role players to reach that level.

Additionally, there is a real chance they will lose at least one key contributor from the current team.

Arguably their four most important guards — D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, Dennis Schroder and Lonnie Walker IV — will be free agents this summer. In addition, Malik Beasley has a team option on his contract for next season.

Along with needing a true 3-and-D wing with length, Los Angeles may need at least one replacement at guard. A Western Conference general manager said it could go after Golden State Warriors guard Donte DiVincenzo (h/t Lakers Daily).

Via Heavy Sports:

“They could make a push for Donte DiVincenzo from the Warriors, depending on what they do with him,” the GM told Heavy Sports NBA insider Sean Deveney. “He might command more than the tax MLE on the market, but he would be the right kind of guy, a shooter and ball-handler off the bench.”

At 6-foot-4, DiVincenzo isn’t a true wing, but he is a good 3-point shooter who can also handle the ball a bit. He shot 39.7% from 3-point range during the regular season for the Warriors.

He also has championship experience. He was a key starter on the Milwaukee Bucks team that won it all two years ago.

DiVincenzo has a player option for next season he can turn down in order to become a free agent.

Watch: Donte DiVincenzo beats the buzzer with crafty drive and finish at the bucket vs. Kings

The Warriors guard beat the first quarter buzzer with a crafty drive and finish at the bucket against the Kings in Game 3 on Thursday.

Without Draymond Green and Gary Payton II, the Golden State Warriors needed someone to step up in Game 3 against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night.

Trailing 0-2 in the series, Donte DiVincenzo helped answer the call.

After the Warriors jumped out to an early lead, DiVincenzo helped get the Chase Center crowd on their feet at the end of the first quarter with a must-see buzzer beater.

With the clock ticking down, the former Villanova guard shook Sacramento’s Trey Lyles with crafty handles to get into the lane. DiVincenzo finished the bucket with a high arching finger roll that floated in the air just long enought to get over the finger tips of the Kings 7′ 2″ center, Alex Len.

Steph Curry ties a Wilt Chamberlain record for 50-point games, but Warriors lose on the road again

Warriors lose another road game despite 50 points from Steph Curry

The Golden State Warriors just cannot figure out how to win a game on the road, losing an important matchup to the Los Angeles Clippers, 134-126.

Curry notched his 12th career 50 point game, and his 2nd this season, but it wasn’t enough. He finished 20-for-28 from the field, and 8-for-14 from 3.

The Warriors are now 0-2 this season in games where Curry has scored 50+ points. With another 50-point game, Curry surpassed Michael Jordan with his seventh 50+ point performance after turning 30 years old. Curry is now tied with Wilt Chamberlain for the all-time record.

Jordan Poole led all other Warriors scorers with 19 points off the bench. Klay Thompson finished with 15 points, and Donte DiVincenzo added 10 points.

The Warriors road struggles continue, as they can’t seem to pack consistency in their luggage as they travel away from the Bay Area. The road record is now 7-27.

The loss was multi-layered, as it was against a division rival, as well as a team they are actively fighting for playoff positioning with. The 5th seed was at stake for the Warriors, who now find themselves in 6th place with a game lead over the Timberwolves and Mavericks, 1.5-game lead over the Thunder for 9th and a two-game lead over the Lakers for the final spot in the play-in.

Draymond Green picked up his 16th technical foul, which means he will serve a one-game suspension.

The Warriors have 12 games left to get things together, including 7 on the road. Their next test is Friday night in Atlanta against the Hawks.

NBA Twitter reacts to Klay Thompson and Donte DiVincenzo leading Warriors to comeback win vs. Timberwolves, 109-104

After Klay Thompson and Donte DiVincenzo helped lead the Warriors to a comeback win over the Timberwolves, NBA Twitter exploded with reactions.

After the Minnesota Timberwolves carried a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter, it looked like the Golden State Warriors were headed toward a home loss. However, Klay Thompson and Donte DiVincenzo weren’t ready to close the book before the fourth quarter on Sunday night.

Without Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green, the duo of Thompson and DiVincenzo sparked a late fourth-quarter run for the Warriors. In the final frame, Divincenzo tallied 10 points while Thompson added eight to steal a comeback by outscoring the Timberwolves 31-17 in the fourth quarter.

After DiVincenzo buried a triple to give the Warriors the lead with 3:02 remaining, Thompson followed with a 3-pointer of his own to give the Warriors a commanding six-point advantage with two minutes left on the clock. Following clutch jumpers from Anthony Lamb, Thompson and DiVincenzo, the Warriors secured their second straight win, 109-104.

Thompson led the game with 32 points on 12-of-23 shooting from the field with six made triples, five boards and four assists in 33 minutes. DiVincenzo added 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor with eight rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes.

Kevon Looney helped the Warriors on the glass with a double-double performance. Looney notched 12 points to go along with a game-high 17 rebounds in 32 minutes.

Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga joining starting lineup vs. Lakers on Thursday

The sophomore forward is averaging 8.5 points and 3.1 rebounds in in 19.4 minutes per contest.

Along with missing Steph Curry, the Golden State Warriors will be without another All-Star for their first game after the break on Thursday against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Andrew Wiggins has been away from the team as he continues to deal with a family matter. The 2022 All-Star forward missed Golden State’s final game before the break due to the same personal matter. According to Steve Kerr, there’s currently no timeline or update on Wiggins’ return to the team.

Without Wiggins, the Warriors opted to add Donte DiVincenzo to the starting lineup alongside Jordan Poole, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Kevon Looney before the break against the Los Angeles Clippers. Anthony Lamb and Jonathan Kuminga each registered over 20 minutes off the bench for the Warriors against the Clippers.

During the 2022-23 season with the Warriors, Wiggins is averaging 17.1 points on 47.3% shooting from the field with five rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest.

Injury Report: Donte DiVincenzo (non-COVID illness), JaMychal Green (healthy and safety protocols) out vs. Knicks

Donte DiVincenzo and JaMychal Green have been added to the injury report for the Warriors’ tilt against the Knicks on Tuesday.

To start the second leg of a road back-to-back, the Golden State Warriors will be without a group of core contributors on Tuesday night against the New York Knicks.

With Andrew Wiggins (adductor) and Steph Curry (shoulder) already out, the Golden State Warriors will also be missing Donte DiVincenzo and JaMychal Green at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. DiVencenzo has been ruled out due to a non-COVID related illness and Green will miss Tuesday’s game due to the health and safety protocol.

Via @anthonyVslater on Twitter:

Due to Golden State’s stretch of injuries, DiVincenzo has entered the starting lineup over the last three games. During that span, the Villanova product has helped provide scoring, tallying 15 or more points in two of his last three games.

Green is coming off one his highest-scoring performances of the season with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field in Golden State’s win over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.

Without four key pieces, Golden State’s young core will likely get a chance to play on Tuesday against the Knicks. Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Patrick Baldwin Jr., Ryan Rollins and James Wiseman could be involved in the Warriors’ rotation in New York.

The Warriors will meet the streaking Knicks at 4:30 p.m. PT on Tuesday evening in the Big Apple.

Mock trade sends Alex Caruso to Warriors as Bulls tank for Wembanyama

Caruso would bolster Milwaukee’s depth as Chicago starts to rebuild.

The Chicago Bulls are off to a 9-12 start to the season as they sit as the No. 12 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Compared to the beginning of last season, the Bulls are off to a complete opposite start as they’ve struggled out the gate with the same core group from last season.

Looking up at the top of the East, the Bulls’ chances of making a run in the playoffs seems slim, let alone just making the postseason — which could call for a potential blow up of the current roster.

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons put together three proposed trades for the Bulls to rebuild their team and focus on the future, including sending Alex Caruso to the defending champs for young pieces and a pick.

Warriors’ Donte DiVincenzo (hamstring) could return Friday vs. Cavaliers

The Warriors could be getting a piece back in the second unit before hosting the Cavaliers on Friday.

After returning from their five-game road swing, the Golden State Warriors returned to Chase Center to host the Sacramento Kings on Monday night. Despite securing a much-needed win to snap their five-game losing streak, the Warriors were still missing a piece off the bench against the Kings.

Due to a hamstring injury, Donte DiVincenzo missed his eighth consecutive game. With the Warriors getting three days off before hosting the red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, DiVincenzo could be nearing a return to the court.

On Wednesday, DiVincenzo practiced and scrimmaged with the Warriors. DiVincenzo also practiced on Sunday before Golden State’s game on Monday against the Kings. If DiVincenzo is cleared by the medical staff, he will return to the lineup on Friday against the Cavs, according to Steve Kerr.

Via @CjHolmes22 on Twitter:

If DiVincenzo is cleared to return, he will provide a spark to a bench unit that has struggled to produce and find a rhythm since his injury on Oct. 23 in the third game of the season.

During his first three games with the Warriors, DiVincenzo averaged five points on 45.5% shooting from the field and 33.3% shooting from beyond the arc, with an assist in 14 minutes per game.

JJ Redick on why he’s not giving up on the Warriors’ bench

J.J. Redick explains why he’s still ‘bullish’ on the Warriors’ bench players.

The Golden State Warriors’ starting five has been brilliant statistically through the first few weeks of the season, led by MVP-caliber production from Steph Curry. When the team’s stars sit down, it has struggled mightily. Poor play from the Warriors’ second unit has contributed to a 4-7 start that has Golden State outside of play-in position.

According to JJ Redick, though, it’s too soon to panic for Steve Kerr and Warriors faithful. On his podcast, Redick argued the Warriors have the right pieces on the bench, but the team needs to be patient as young players develop and veterans shake off the rust.

“They’re just two games out of the play-in, we’re 10 games in to the season, they’re just 4.5 games out of first place. There’s no reason to panic, and you have to assume the rotation shortens in the playoffs.

Now, for those three young guys I mentioned: Moses Moody, Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman — you would assume they would get better throughout the season. Wiseman hasn’t played in two years … especially defensively, his feel for the NBA is just not great. It’s just not great.

Then you look at the rest of their bench. Guys that really should be contributing. JaMychal Green has been a key contributor on a number of teams. Donte DiVincenzo has been a key contributor on the Bucks pre-injury. He’s been bad as well, and he hasn’t played a ton. So you would expect those two guys specifically to work their way in.

The one guy that has been a little bit of a surprise, because he’s basically been tossed around already in his young career, is Ty Jerome. And now his advanced numbers aren’t great, but he’s had some really good moments. I’m still bullish on the bench, if that makes sense, because I think there’s still improvement from the young guys. I think Green and DiVincenzo figure it out. I think Ty Jerome is in a great spot and a great fit for him. So I think eventually this self-corrects a bit.”

Warriors’ Donte DiVincenzo (hamstring) practices Sunday, won’t play vs. Kings on Monday

The Warriors guard has missed the last seven games due to a hamstring injury.

During their five-game losing streak, the Golden State Warriors have been missing a key piece off the bench. After suffering a hamstring injury in the third contest of the season, Donte DiVincenzo has missed seven consecutive games and counting for the Warriors.

However, after returning to the Bay Area over the weekend, positive signs are pointing toward DiVincenzo’s return. Although he’s already been ruled out of Monday’s contest against the Sacramento Kings, the Villanova product participated in practice on Sunday.

Via @CjHolmes22 on Twitter:

In his first three games with the Warriors, DiVincenzo averaged five points on 45.5% shooting from the field and 33.3% shooting from long distance with an assist in 14 minutes per game.

Without DiVincenzo, the Warriors have mixed through a different group of players off the bench. Alongside Jordan Poole, Steve Kerr has given minutes to Ty Jerome, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody and Anthony Lamb.

After missing Monday’s contest against the Kings, DiVincenzo will get three days off during the week to nurse his hamstring before the Warriors host the red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers at Chase Center on Friday night.
