Stock Report: Dontae Manning steps up, while Jordan Burch puts on a clinic

The Oregon Ducks’ defense had a great showing in a 31-7 blowout win over the Oregon State Beavers on Friday.

The end of the regular season as come, and if you’re someone who had stock in the Oregon Ducks from the start of the year, then your portfolio is likely looking pretty great right about now.

For the most part, we’ve seen a lot of stocks on the rise, and only a couple that have fallen off from the start of the year. That was the trend once again on Friday night with the Ducks’ 31-7 win over the Oregon State Beavers, clinching a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game against the Washington Huskies.

It was another great showing from Bo Nix and the Oregon offense, while the Ducks’ defensive line had one of the best games of the year, holding the Beavers’ vaunted rushing attack to just 53 yards on the ground. Here are some of the biggest stock risers and fallers from Friday’s game:

Dan Lanning offers injury update on Bucky Irving, Khyree Jackson, others ahead of ASU game

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning offered an injury update on some key players ahead of Saturday’s game against ASU.

While there didn’t appear to be any major injuries that took place for the Oregon Ducks on Saturday night in a 36-27 win over the USC Trojans, there were a few minor injuries to note after all was said and done.

During the game, guys like Bucky Irving, Khyree Jackson, Jackson Powers-Johnson, and Jahlil Florence all left the game with injuries, and while many of them returned, there is some concern about their availability going forward.

On Monday night during his weekly press conference, Lanning addressed those injuries, starting with the cornerbacks.

“Yeah, they all (practiced) and I definitely think they’ll be able to help us this week,” Lanning said when asked about Jackson, Florence, and Manning.

Later, when the conversation about Powers-Johnson and Irving game up, Laning offered more positive news.

“Both those guys were practicing today, expect them to be available,” Lanning said.

We will monitor throughout the week and see which players are able to practice in full and if anyone is held out, but this is certainly positive news to start the week.

Position Outlook: Nikko Reed adds another playmaker to crowded cornerback room

Who will be competing for the starting CB spots at Oregon, and how good are their chances of securing it? We broke down the options.

When coming to Oregon over a year ago, head coach Dan Lanning said that he wanted to create a Ducks’ roster that was stacked with talent, and competitive top to bottom. He didn’t care about the players who were listed as starters before his time in Eugene; his goal was to amass talent and have them all compete for the starting spot on the field.

“Iron sharpens iron.”

It’s a common phrase uttered by Lanning and his staff. It’s been impressive to see how the roster has taken shape over the past off-season with that ideal in mind.

Position battles are going to be fascinating to watch this fall in Eugene. With a handful of incoming transfers and many more highly-ranked recruits, the Ducks have a roster that is fraught with guys who could easily win the starting jobs.

One of the positions on the roster that will see the most competition is cornerback. The Ducks have welcomed in a couple of transfers who have shown that they can produce at a high level in the past, and there are some incoming freshmen who have a shot to make some noise as well. On top of the newcomers, veteran mainstays like Trikweze Bridges, Dontae Manning, and Jahlil Florence are also fighting to stay near the top of the depth chart.

What will the end result be once fall comes? We can’t wait to see. Here’s an early position outlook for the cornerbacks in Eugene.

Instant reaction: Defense dominated the offense in Spring Game

There wasn’t as much of an offensive explosion for fans to enjoy as last year, with the Oregon defense dominating the day.

After quite a slow start from both offenses in the first half, both the Green and Yellow teams managed to find their way into the end zone in a spring game that was dominated by both defensive units.

Green was ahead 10-0 at the halftime break and went on to take it 23-20.

Bo Nix found Troy Franklin for a 32-yard touchdown with just under a minute remaining before the half ran out. The senior quarterback took several shots down the field to his favorite receiver and it wasn’t until the touchdown that Nix finally hit Franklin in stride.

That was nice to see, but unfortunately, most of the talk after the game was the ineffectiveness of backup Ty Thompson. He threw eight incompletions to start out his day before finding Patrick Herbert for a five-yard gain.

Oregon’s backup did have a better second half, however, as he threw for a couple of touchdowns.

Thompson did drive the Yellow team down to the 7-yard line, but his fourth-down attempt fell to the turf in the end zone, and the half ended with that thud.

While the offenses had a hard time finding their way, the defenses both dominated. There is a reason why Nix couldn’t find Franklin open until late in the first half and why Thompson struggled.

Transfer Tez Johnson made the play of the day as he turned a short crossing route into a 63-yard touchdown thanks to his speed and maneuverability. He

Dontae Manning looking for breakout season in fourth year at Oregon

It’s taken a while for Dontae Manning to find his footing in Eugene, but 2023 might be the season he breaks out.

Since before he began his college career, Dontae Manning, a cornerback for the Oregon Ducks, has had big things expected of him. He expects the same things of himself and recognizes that his past two seasons haven’t cut it.

“I felt like I left a lot of plays out there that I could have made for my teammates and for this defense,” he said.

In the class of 2020, Manning was a 5-star recruit for the Ducks and was the fourth-best cornerback recruit in the country according to 247Sports. To this day, he is still the highest-rated CB to ever sign at Oregon. Unfortunately, he was kept off the field that year for what would’ve been his freshman season. Manning’s seasons in 2021 and 2022 weren’t bad, but not at the level of someone who was previously expected to be a first-round draft pick.

Despite not yet reaching the heights we were promised, Manning is optimistic and excited for the 2023 season. He has been working hard this spring to develop what he recognizes as the weaker parts of his game.

“Working on my ball skills, using my length more, and more physicality just for myself, but just being able to use my tools and create a bigger tool bag,” he said.

One reason for fans to be optimistic is that 2023 will be the first time Manning plays under a defensive system that he already knows. This will be Manning’s fourth season as a Duck, but it will be his first playing with the same head coach and defensive coordinator two years in a row, which is something he thinks he will benefit from.

“From year one to year two is massive,” Manning said. “Year one was like a trial run. We know the system, we know the coaches, and we know what we’re supposed to do with the technique. So then it’s just adding pieces to it, now adding pieces for me to go to that next level.”

This offseason, Oregon lost star cornerback Christian Gonzalez — who is projected to be taken in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday. Additionally, former 4-star corner Jalil Tucker announced on April 15th that he is leaving Eugenes and entering the transfer portal.

Following both of these losses, the Ducks need a cornerback who is capable of locking down the elite receivers Oregon will face in 2023. Entering 2023, there is no reason it can’t be Manning that steps up to the occasion. With his talent, humility, and the benefit of a complete season under Lanning’s system, he can still be an elite corner, and the Ducks will need him to be.

Dontae Manning details knee injury, clarifies status for start of 2022 season

CB Dontae Manning missed most of spring ball with a knee injury. He detailed his recovery and offered his status for fall practice on Wednesday.

The already questionable state of the Oregon Ducks’ defensive secondary took an unfortunate hit during spring football earlier in the year. Former 5-star cornerback Dontae Manning went down with a knee injury in one of the first scrimmages of the camp and had to be taken out of Autzen Stadium in a wheelchair.

With guys like Mykael Wright, DJ James, and Verone McKinley not returning for the 2022 season, the depth at the position and in the secondary in general was immediately thrown into question. The Ducks had veteran transfer, Christian Gonzalez to lean on, but when one of your projected starting cornerbacks goes down, fans were right to hold their breath.

It’s finally time for that sigh of relief to come, though.

At Oregon’s 2022 Media Day, Manning talked to reporters about the upcoming season and addressed the knee injury that held him out of the majority of the spring season.

“It was just a grade 2 strain, but I recovered from it from the rehab. I’m lifting and feeling great,” Manning said.

Music to Oregon fans’ ears.

[lawrence-related id=26781]

Now with a clear path to a starting spot with the hopes of stepping into a lockdown corner role opposite Gonzalez, Manning has a lot to prove about what he can do. He is among the highest-rated players to ever commit to the Ducks as a recruit, but he’s yet to see a huge opportunity where he can make a name for himself on the field.

“I feel very prepared,” Manning said. “I didn’t have a lot of setbacks in my career as far as my freshman and sophomore year, and I got a little bit more playing time on the field last year. But this year I feel really confident.”

If Oregon’s defense is going to be as dominant as many people project with Dan Lanning and Tosh Lupoi at the helm, then an unproven secondary is going to need to prove early on that they can fly rather than flounder. We’ve seen Gonzalez prove himself during his time with the Colorado Buffaloes, but many eyes will be pointed to his adversary across the field.

Will Manning step up when the team needs him? That’s not something we will know for sure until September rolls around. At the moment, though, fans should just be happy that he will be healthy enough to try.

Dan Lanning discusses injury timelines and measuring success in Oregon spring football

Injury news, measuring success, and a quick look at install. That’s what Dan Lanning touched on after Tuesday’s practice.

As the month of April continues to roll along, we are getting closer and closer to the Oregon Ducks spring game. With that, the team is making progress on the practice field and getting used to the new system that an entirely new coaching staff has implemented under Dan Lanning.

On Tuesday, practice was moved inside because of weather, but that didn’t slow the Ducks down, who went through 11-on-11 drills, special teams drills, and ball security work during the portion of practice that was open to media members.

Afterward, Lanning met with media members to discuss the current state of how things are going. He touched on a couple of injury updates, as well as the best way to measure progress going forward. Here are some of the best quotes from the session.

Dan Lanning offers positive injury update on CB Dontae Manning

We got a somewhat positive injury update on cornerback Dontae Manning on Tuesday after practice.

[jwplayer GguV43Uc]

One of the biggest takeaways from the Oregon Ducks’ morning practice on Tuesday was the fact that cornerback Dontae Manning was not a full participant, and was sporting a full leg brace while going through stretches and working off to the side.

After he left Saturday’s scrimmage in a wheelchair, this was actually a positive development, as the young defensive back was able to put weight on the leg and go through limited work.

[lawrence-related id=22508]

After practice, head coach Dan Lanning offered an update on what we know about the injury at this point.

“He has an injury, going through recovery right now,” Lanning said. “We don’t think it’ll be a long long-term deal but obviously you’re monitoring his safety first.”

While Lanning says that they don’t think the injury will be long-term, it’s probably safe to assume that we won’t see Manning participating in the Oregon spring game at the end of April.

After losing players like Mykael Wright, D.J. James, and Verone McKinley, the Duck’s depth in the secondary is a bit thin, and Manning was projected to be a piece that fills in well this year, as a former 5-star recruit.

We will continue to monitor the situation going forward and hope that he can return healthy this fall, if not sooner.

Spring Ball Takeaways: Dontae Manning update, and more highlights from 11-on-11 ‘Fastball’ period

More 11-on-11 drills led to several highlights, including a beautiful ball from QB Bo Nix to RB Byron Cardwell down the sideline. That, and other takeaways from Tuesday.

We were spoiled last week in Eugene when the weather allowed us to enjoy some crisp and sunny mornings followed by sunny afternoons in the 60s and 70s. On Tuesday, the seasons changed a bit, and a rain-snow mix drove Oregon Ducks practice inside to the Moshofsky Center for the first time this spring.

While players stayed out of the elements, there was no shortage of hustle on the field, as the team went through special teams drills, ball security practice, and another 11-on-11 fastball period.

Instead of breaking down which players were playing with which group, we made a point to try and focus on some of the plays that were made since players are rotating through groups each day.

Here are some takeaways from the morning session:

Oregon cornerback Dontae Manning suffers apparent lower-body injury in Ducks’ scrimmage

Dontae Manning left Oregon’s scrimmage with an apparent lower-body injury on Saturday. The extent of the injury is currently unknown.

[jwplayer aKMTk5CG]

The Oregon Ducks held their first spring scrimmage inside Autzen Stadium on Saturday morning. While there were many positives, one concerning development came when cornerback Dontae Manning left in a wheelchair with an apparent lower-body injury.

Manning is a third-year sophomore that was in a position to compete for a starting CB spot on the defense this offseason. He has been working with the first-team defense during the spring.

[lawrence-related id=22376]

We don’t know the extent of the injury, and head coach Dan Lanning was unable to elaborate after the scrimmage.

“I’ll have to wait and see what happened,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. “He got dinged up. I really can’t speak on it yet because I’m obviously just leaving the practice field.”

After recording 18 tackles with one for loss and a pass breakup last season, there was an expectation and hope that Manning, a former five-star recruit, would take a step up on Oregon’s defense and help replace Mykael Wright as the No. 1 corner in the secondary. So far, we have seen him frequently working opposite transfer Christian Gonzalez and project he will be among the more important pieces of the secondary.

We will continue to monitor this injury and provide updates as soon as more information is known.
