Don Nelson: I wasn’t invited to Dirk Nowitzki jersey retirement ceremony

Don and Donnie Nelson. The general manager who acquired Nowitzki’s draft rights on the night of June 24, 1998, and Don’s assistant GM/son who was insistently bullish about raw 19-year-old Nowitzki’s NBA potential. The question is, why weren’t they there? Several sources on Friday night strongly pushed back on Don Nelson’s assertion earlier in the evening when he told The News: “I wasn’t invited. I really wanted to be there, but I didn’t feel that I should just show up without an invitation, so I didn’t.”

More on this storyline

“I read about what [Nowitzki] said,” Nelson said. “That was nice. I don’t think Dirk had any decisions about who was there. I think that’s all an organization thing. Mark Cuban’s in charge of that, I’m sure.” A source told The News that Cuban was not in charge of the invite list. That was done by an event planner. There was a three-page spreadsheet of guests for whom Nowitzki requested tickets, but more than 60 were unable to make it to Dallas because of canceled airline flights that day or COVID-19 concerns. -via Dallas Morning News / January 8, 2022

On this day, legendary Boston Celtics team president and coach Red Auerbach passed away in 2006.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, legendary Celtics team president and coach Arnold “Red” Auerbach passed away at the age of 89 in 2006. Auerbach assembled a career in basketball unparalleled in its time and to this day, winning nine titles with the team as a coach, and seven more as an executive.

He joined the franchise in 1950 after stints coaching the Washington Capitols (now defunct) in the Basketball Association of America (BAA – a precursor league to the NBA) and at the NCAA level as an assistant coach with the Duke Blue Devils before joining the Celtics.

Red — as he was often called — transformed the game with his emphasis on the fast break and team-focused play reliant on ball movement at all positions.

PHOTOS: Warriors in the Basketball Hall of Fame

Warriors Wire commemorates the 28 members of the Basketball Hall of Fame with ties to the Golden State/Philadelphia Warriors franchsise.

This past weekend, Chris Webber was voted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Webber was acquired by Golden State as the No. 1 overall pick in a draft-day trade with Orlando in 1993. He won Rookie of the Year in the 1993-94 season but was then surprisingly traded to Washington amid friction with Warriors coach Don Nelson. Webber also wrapped up his playing career in a nine-game cameo with the Warriors in the 2007-08 season.

Former Warriors head coach Rick Adelman also was voted into this year’s Hall of Fame class. Although he is better known for his years with the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings and Houston Rockets, Adelman coached the Warriors to a 66-98 record in the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons.

Webber and Adelman become the 28th and 29th members of the Hall of Fame with a direct tie to the Warriors franchise — not counting indirect ties such as former coach Dave Cowens, who is inducted as a player but not a coach.

Below, we celebrate the 29 Hall of Fame figures with ties to the Golden State/Philadelphia Warriors franchise in photos.

On this date in Warriors history: Steph Curry makes NBA debut vs. Rockets in 2009

In 2009, Davidson’s Stephen Curry tallied 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting with seven assists and four steals in his NBA debut against the Rockets.

Although it’s not the anniversary of a championship or memorable performance, October 28 will mark the arrival of the Golden State Warriors’ future two-time Most Valuable Player.

After drafting Stephen Curry with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Davidson product laced up for the Golden State Warriors for the first time on Oct. 28 against the Houston Rockets.

October 28, 2009

In his first time suiting up in an NBA uniform, the 21-year-old drew a start at shooting guard for Don Nelson in Golden State’s home opener. During his first game, the rookie recorded 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field with seven assists, four steals and two rebounds in 36 minutes.

[lawrence-related id=8165]

Surprisingly the sharpshooting prospect only pulled up from beyond the arc once in his debut, missing his lone long-distance attempt.

Watch highlights from Curry’s NBA debut via YouTube:

Monta Ellis led the game in scoring with 26 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field in Golden State’s 108-107 loss to the Rockets on opening night.

On his way to earning a spot on the All-Rookie First Team, Curry averaged 17.5 points on 46.2% shooting from the field with 5.9 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.9 steals per contest. The young Splash Brother knocked down 43.7% from 3-point range on 4.8 attempts per game.

Draft Rewind: Warriors select UTEP’s Tim Hardaway in 1989 first round

When the Golden State Warriors drafted Tim Hardaway out of UTEP in 1989, the Warriors added the final piece to Don Nelson’s Run TMC trio.

While the rest of the league is getting ready for the NBA’s return in the Orlando bubble, the Golden State Warriors will be staying home. With the Warriors season officially over, the duo of Bob Myers and Steve Kerr will have a jumpstart when it comes to preparing for the NBA Draft.

For the first time in years, the Warriors are slated to own a top-five draft pick. Before draft day arrives in October, Warriors Wire is digging into Golden State’s history for memorable selections.

In 1989, the Warriors added the finishing touch to a trio that lives on in Golden State lore.

June 27, 1989

After selecting in the top-five in 1988, the Golden State Warriors surged to a playoff appearance behind Chris Mullin and rookie Mitch Richmond. However, the Warriors were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Phoenix Suns.

In 1989, the Warriors owned the No. 14 overall selection in the first round. To kick off the 1989 draft, the Sacramento Kings took Duke’s Pervis Ellison off the board with the first overall pick. Fast forward to the middle of the draft, and the Warriors were on the clock.

With a need in the backcourt, the Warriors added Texas at El Paso guard Tim Hardaway at No. 14. In his senior season at UTEP, the 6-foot guard averaged 22 points, 5.4 assists, four rebounds and 2.8 steals per contest. Hardaway helped lead the Miners to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. His No. 10 jersey was later retired by UTEP.

In his rookie season, Hardaway started in 78 games, averaging 14.7, 8.7 assists and 2.1 steals in 33.7 minutes per game. Despite Hardaway’s impressive start to his career, the Warriors missed the playoffs in 1990.

Watch a highlight dunk from Hardaway’s rookie season via YouTube:

Wayne Embry remembers the shock and …

Wayne Embry remembers the shock and sorrow that swept through the Boston Celtics when Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated hours before Game 1 of the 1968 Eastern Division finals. I think we have 16 guarantees and 19 people coming to training camp, but if you play like you did today I’ll give you a chance.’ And that was the first time a coach really had a conversation with me. That’s all I needed.
