Former Notre Dame player added to Giants rookie minicamp roster

Which of his game winning kicks at Notre Dame was the best?

Few if any kickers came up as clutch as [autotag]Jonathan Doerer[/autotag] in all of college football last fall as the Notre Dame graduate student nailed a walk-off winner from 41-yards out to beat Florida State in week one before connecting from 48-yards in the final seconds to beat Virginia Tech just over a month later.

Doerer used up all of his eligibility at Notre Dame but isn’t done with football quite yet as he’s listed on the New York Giants roster at rookie minicamp as of Friday, May 13.

Graham Gano is the Giants regular kicker and has been in the NFL for 12 years so it’s hard to see this turning into any type of competition but perhaps an impressive showing here can get Doerer some looks to catch on somewhere in the league.

Doerer hit 49 of 65 field goal attempts during his four seasons kicking at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame football: Doerer Named Lou Groza Star of the Week

Notre Dame kicker Jonathan Doerer had a huge role in the upset win of Clemson and was honored for his big game on Monday.

NOTRE DAME, Indiana — University of Notre Dame placekicker Jonathan Doerer has been named a Lou Groza Award “Star of the Week” for his performance in the double-overtime win over then-No. 1 Clemson.

Doerer was 5-5 on PAT and 4-5 on FGA (made field goals of 24, 27, 45 and 44 yards, missed 57). Doerer matched the Notre Dame record for kicking points in a game, accounting for 17 kicking points vs. Clemson. His 17 points tie for the most kicking points in a single game by any FBS player this season, and are the most by any FBS player this weekend.

Doerer made four field goals on the day, matching his previous career high in the 2019 Camping World Bowl vs. Iowa State. His previous single-game point high was 15 in the 2019 Camping World Bowl. Doerer’s five field goal attempts match a single-game high in the ACC this season.

The senior has a team-leading total of 63 points, which ranks ninth among FBS kickers. He is 11-14 on field-goal attempts through the season, connecting on all 30 PAT attempts. He has now connected on 92-consecutive PATs, a streak which extends to 2018 vs. Navy and ranks 10th among all FBS active streaks. The streak is the fourth-longest current streak in the ACC.

The Irish return to the road this week at Boston College. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday on ABC.

Notre Dame football: Doerer expects to return in 2021

The return of Notre Dame’s kicker will have a positive impact on what they’re able to do with the rest of their ’21 recruiting efforts

Notre Dame is set to benefit from the NCAA’s decision to essentially allow fall athletes to play this season without using a year of eligibility.

Placekicker and Lou Garza watch list member Jonathan Doerer told the media on Tuesday that his plan as of now is to remain in the blue and gold next fall.

“Most likely I’ll be coming back next year” Doerer said.

Doerer is 3 of 4 on field goal attempts this season and a perfect 9 of 9 on extra point attempts.

This allows Notre Dame to run the rest of their 2021 recruiting efforts without having to potentially offer a kicker as one of the better ones in the entire nation is set to return to Notre Dame.

That scholarship can then go to use at a different position of need for the 2021 season.

Doerer has been a pleasant sight for Notre Dame fans as he was successful on 17 of 20 field goal attempts last year, hitting both attempts from over 50 yards.  He’s also only missed one extra point in his career.
