LSU athletics finishes 13th in final Director’s Cup rankings

LSU athletics finished No. 13 in the Directors’ Cup standings.

The 2023-24 Learfield Director’s Cup rankings were released on Wednesday, with LSU athletics coming in at No. 13.

“The Directors’ Cup gauges the overall success of institution’s athletic programs by awarding points for each team based on its finish in NCAA championships. A maximum of 19 sports are counted, four of which must be men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and baseball.”

Texas, Stanford, Tennessee, Florida and Virginia made up the top five with fellow SEC schools Alabama and Texas A&M making the cut for the top 10 too.

The highlight of LSU’s athletic year was the gymnastics team capturing its first national title in program history. After LSU won titles in women’s basketball and baseball the year prior, the gymnastics title kept LSU’s trend of winning national championships alive.

The championship marked the 52nd national title win in LSU athletics history. Only one SEC school has more.

Women’s basketball and volleyball made strong contributions too with Kim Mulkey’s group making a run to the Elite Eight and the women’s volleyball making it to the national semifinals.

Women’s track and field, both indoor and outdoor, contributed 73.5 points each to LSU’s final Directors’ Cup total. Football and softball, who both finished in the top 15 for their respective sport, provided 64.5 and 64 points, respectively.

LSU’s 2 national titles lead to 9th-place finish in Directors’ Cup

It’s LSU’s highest Director’s Cup finish since 2009 and second-highest of all time.

With national championships in women’s basketball and baseball, as well as top-10 finishes in gymnastics, beach volleyball and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, LSU finished No. 9 in the final Directors’ Cup standings for the 2022-23 academic year.

It’s the school’s highest finish since 2009 and second-highest of all time behind 2008 when it finished eighth.

Stanford ultimately won the Cup, which is given to the top overall athletics department in the country. The Tigers edged out USC, which rounds out the top 10. LSU ranks fourth among SEC schools behind Florida, Tennessee and Georgia.

Eight SEC schools finished in the top-25 overall, which was the most of any conference.

LSU has now won 51 total national championships with this year’s additions, and it’s the 11th time the Tigers have captured two in the same year. LSU will hope to add to that total under [autotag]Scott Woodward[/autotag], whose tenure as athletics director has been very successful so far.

Michigan leads for the coveted Directors’ Cup

It’s why Michigan is called leaders and best!

Michigan is finding an ample amount of success in the athletic world.

The April 7th standings for the Directors’ Cup came out on Thursday, and Michigan is in the lead over Notre Dame by seven points.

For those that aren’t familiar with the Directors’ Cup, it’s an award given annually to colleges and universities that have the most success in athletics. If a team finishes first in a sport, they are given 100 points — if they finish second then it’s 90 points, and so on and so forth.

The Wolverines just received major points from men’s (64 points) and women’s (73 points) basketball, women’s swimming (72 points), and wrestling (90 points). Seven total teams received points for the maize and blue during the winter cycle.

Michigan was sitting in third place after the fall cycle, but after having so much success with winter athletics the Wolverines have bolstered into the lead.

Rounding out the current top-five is: Michigan with 761 points, Notre Dame with 754 points,  Ohio State with 701.5 points, Stanford with 690.5 points, and Texas with 679.5 points.

The next standings will be out on April 23rd.
