UFC 311 news: Grant Dawson vs. Diego Ferreira added to January pay-per-view

A lightweight banger between Grant Dawson and Diego Ferreira has been added to the UFC 311 event in Los Angeles.

Another fun matchup in the lightweight division has been added to UFC 311 in January.

On Jan. 18 at Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, USA TODAY SPORTS/MMA Junkie-ranked lightweight No. 8 Grant Dawson will meet Diego Ferreira in the first pay-per-view of 2025. The news was first reported by Fight Bananas. Both camps have publicly shared the matchup on social media, and MMA Junkie also confirmed the booking with a source familiar with the booking.

Dawson (22-2-1 MMA, 10-1-1 UFC) will enter the contest on a two-fight winning streak, with both wins coming in 2024. His most recent fight was a second-round TKO stoppage of Rafa Garcia in October, which came after a unanimous decision win over Joe Solecki in June.

Ferreira (19-5 MMA, 10-5 UFC) also has won back-to-back fights, although the judges were not needed for either victory. In May 2023, Ferreira knocked out Michael Johnson in the second round and followed that up with a third-round TKO of Mateusz Rebecki. Both finishes earned $50,000 Performance of the Night bonuses.

UFC on ESPN 56 video: Diego Ferreira overcomes knockdown, mutilates Mateusz Rebecki’s face for late TKO

Yikes. Mateusz Rebecki sported some nasty swelling thanks to the beatdown from Diego Ferreira at UFC on ESPN 56.

[autotag]Diego Ferreira[/autotag] was down but not out.

On the UFC on ESPN 56 main card, Ferreira (19-5 MMA, 10-5 UFC) overcame early adversity to dish out a brutal beating on the face of surging lightweight [autotag]Mateusz Rebecki[/autotag] (19-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC). The fight took place at Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

Referee Gary Copeland’s interjection to wave off the bout at 4:59 of Round 3 officially marked completion of Ferreira’s rally. He was dropped with a big left hand in Round 1.

Ferreira busted up Rebecki with punches throughout the second round, then utilized relentless and consistent ground-and-pound to get the stoppage. Rebecki sported severe swelling and purple discoloration on his face along with some cuts.

Ferreira won in his first appearance since May 2023 and extended his winning streak to two. Rebecki lost for the first time in the UFC and had his 16-fight streak snapped.

Diego Ferreira vs. Mateusz Rebecki prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC on ESPN 56

MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom takes a quick look at the UFC on ESPN 56 bout between Diego Ferreira and Mateusz Rebecki.

[autotag]Diego Ferreira[/autotag] and [autotag]Mateusz Rebecki[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ESPN 56 from Enterprise Center in St. Louis. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Diego Ferreira vs. Mateusz Rebecki UFC on ESPN 56 preview

Ferreira (18-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) and Rebecki (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) compete in the lone lightweight bout on the main card. … Ferreira will look to remain in the win column following a knockout win of Michael Johnson last year, which snapped a three-fight kid. … Rebecki only has one loss on his professional record, which came in just his fourth pro fight. He has since won 16 straight, including stoppages in his Dana White Contender Series appearance, and his first two UFC bouts (Loik Radzhabov and Roosevelt Roberts).

Diego Ferreira vs. Mateusz Rebecki expert pick, prediction

In what is easily the best offering on the main card, [autotag]Diego Ferreira[/autotag] will welcome [autotag]Mateusz Rebecki[/autotag] to the next level of the UFC lightweight ladder.

A tried-and-true member of lightweight’s upper echelons, Ferreira has either competed with or beaten some of the best his division has to offer.

Despite stepping onto the scene as a brawling Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Ferreira has sharpened his striking skills while cross-training between his personal fight team and Fortis MMA.

Although Ferreira showed excellent in-fight adjustments in his last outing opposite southpaw Michael Johnson, the 39-year-old veteran still shows some susceptibility to southpaw counters and bodywork.

Considering that Rebecki brings plenty of both with his pressuring style, I suspect the Polish ADCC champion could be a uniquely tricky matchup for Ferreira when factoring in the wrestling and grappling-savvy of “Rebeasti.”

I’m tempted to pick Ferreira to pull off the upset at his current betting odds, but I’ll instead semi-reluctantly side with Rebecki and his southpaw pressure to produce a finish toward the end of round 2.

Diego Ferreira vs. Mateusz Rebecki odds

The oddsmakers and the public heavily favor the Polish fighter this weekend, listing Rebecki at -500 and Ferreira as a sizable underdog at +360 via FanDuel. Ferreira has been an underdog in three of his last four, but no higher than +200. Rebecki enters as a favorite yet again, a familiar position. From his Dana White’s Contender Series bout to his first three UFC bouts, he has been listed anywhere from a slight -155 favorite to a massive -800 favorite.

Diego Ferreira vs. Mateusz Rebecki start time, how to watch

As the third bout on the main card, Ferreira and Rebecki are expected to make their walk to the octagon around 8:20 p.m. ET (5:20 p.m. PT). The fight broadcasts live on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

UFC Fight Night 224 winner Diego Ferreira happy to prove he’s ‘not just a jiu-jitsu fighter’ with KO of Michael Johnson

Diego Ferreira got to show he’s more than just a threat on the ground at UFC Fight Night 224.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Diego Ferreira[/autotag] got to show he’s more than just a threat on the ground at UFC Fight Night 224.

Ferreira (18-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) knocked out Michael Johnson (21-19 MMA, 13-15 UFC) in the third round this past Saturday at the UFC Apex.

Most of Ferreira’s career finishes have come by submission, but he was able to show off another wrinkle to his game with a perfect overhand right that shut Johnson’s lights out.

“Let me come back a new fighter,” Ferreira told reporters at the post-fight news conference. “Let me come back as a new MMA fighter, not just a jiu-jitsu fighter with how everybody thinks I am. I proved today that’s what I came for. I came with the mission we planned, and I really did the plan we came for.”

[lawrence-related id=2644274,2643561,2644092]

Ferreira snapped a three-fight losing skid after returning from a 17-month layoff, which made the victory that much sweeter for The Fortis MMA fighter.

“I never fought with so much pressure in my life, especially with the last three losses I had,” Ferreira said. “To come back and TKO perfect with someone that level. We fought so many guys better than – like champions. So, for me it was great, and I’m proud of myself. For me right now, I really want to get to the rankings. I want to fight some guys before I go to the rankings, but my goal is getting closer to the belt again.”
