Georgia baseball’s Charlie Condon wins Howser Trophy

UGA baseball star Charlie Condon, who leads the nation in home runs and batting average, wins college baseball’s highest individual honor

Georgia Bulldogs baseball star Charlie Condon has won the Dick Howser Trophy, which has named him as college baseball’s player of the year.

Condon won the 37th edition of the Howser Throphy over Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana, Wake Forest’s Chase Burns, Florida’s Jac Caglianone, and Arkansas’ Hagen Smith.

Condon leads the nation in batting average at .433. The powerful hitter has the most home runs (37) of any player in the country. Condon has a team-high 78 RBIs and has drawn 57 walks this season.

Condon was already named as the SEC player of the year. Condon, who made the All-SEC team at third base, put together a historic season.

Condon’s elite season is a big reason why Georgia hosted a super regional in the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately, Georgia lost in three games to NC State, so the Bulldogs won’t be playing in the College World Series.

“It’s just a big melting pot of emotions right now,” said Condon after Georgia was eliminated in the NCAA Tournament. “Really proud of this group and what we were able to accomplish and really thankful to be a part of it.”

Georgia exceeded expectations in year one of the Wes Johnson era. The Bulldogs got outstanding play from Charlie Condon, who is expected to enter the 2024 MLB draft, but has not made an official announcement yet.

Florida’s baseball’s two-way star named Dick Howser Trophy Finalist

Caglianone is piling up the hardware after another successful season of collegiate baseball.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced the finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy on Thursday which included Florida’s star first baseman/left-handed pitcher [autotag]Jac Caglianone[/autotag].

Caglianone, the 2023 SEC Player of the Year, is just two home runs away from tying his UF season record of 33 set last season in 2023. He has buoyed his team during a postseason surge that carried the Gators to an upset victory over 11th-seeded Oklahoma State in Stillwater, elevating them into the Clemson Super Regional.

Joining Cags on the final list of five are junior second baseman Travis Bazzana of Oregon State, junior pitcher Chase Burns of Wake Forest, redshirt sophomore third baseman/first baseman/outfielder Charlie Condon of Georgia and junior starting pitcher Hagen Smith of Arkansas.

All five have earned All-America and all-conference status — including four Players or Pitchers of the Year for their respective conferences — and are expected to be featured on next week’s NCBWA All-America squads.

The 2024 Dick Howser Trophy will be awarded at a national news conference at Charles Schwab Park in Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday, June 14, at 11 a.m. ET.

Tommy White, Luke Holman named Dick Howser Trophy semifinalists

The pair of Tigers are among the 68 semifinalists for the award, which is given to the national player of the year.

For the second year in a row, multiple LSU players find themselves in the mix for the Dick Howser Trophy, given annually to the top college baseball player in the nation.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], the first overall pick in last year’s MLB draft, won the award after leading the Tigers to a national title in 2023. Now, third baseman [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and pitcher [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] have been named semifinalists for the 2024 iteration of the award.

There are 68 semifinalists in total.

White is in his second season with the Tigers after transferring in from NC State and earning First Team All-Ameican honors in 2023. He leads the team in batting average at .332 nine doubles, 20 home runs and 57 RBI — also a team-high.

Holman joined the team this past offseason from Alabama and is 7-3 with a 2.74 ERA in 72.1 innings. He has struck out 100 batters while walking 30.

Both players are looking to become the third LSU player to win the award, joining Eddy Furniss in 1998 and Skenes last season.

LSU’s Paul Skenes wins the Dick Howser Trophy

The Dick Howser Trophy is given to the national player of the year.

America’s Ace, [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], is the winner of the Dick Howser Trophy. The [autotag]Dick Howser Trophy[/autotag] is awarded to the National Player of the Year.

The three finalists for the award were Skenes, his teammate [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], and Florida’s Jac Caglianone. At the end of the day, Skenes came out on top. Skenes has a 12-2 record this season with a 1.77 ERA, 188 strikeouts and 18 walks in 107 innings pitched.

He has been in a league of his own this year and he amped up his game for the regional and super regional. He pitched a complete game victory against Tulane in the regional as he gave up two runs over nine innings and struck out 12 hitters.

In the super regional against Kentucky, Skenes gave up zero runs on four hits in 7.2 innings pitched. He struck out nine hitters and only walked one as he led the Tigers to a huge win in game one.

Skenes will take the mound once again this Saturday as LSU plays Tennessee in Omaha.

Dylan Crews and Paul Skenes named Dick Howser trophy finalists

The accolades continue to roll in for Crews and Skenes.

The accolades continue to roll in for LSU baseball’s premier stars.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] were named finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, a national award given to the sport’s best player.

Crews and Skenes are joined by Florida’s Jac Caglianone, Wake Forest’s Rhett Lowder and West Virginia’s J.J. Wetherholt.

If Crews or Skenes were to win, it’d be the first time a Tiger won the award since [autotag]Eddy Furniss[/autotag] in 1998.

LSU is about to play a super regional this weekend and has heavily relied on Skenes and Crews this year.

Crews is the best hitter in a lineup that ranks among the sport’s best and has a chance to be the first player off the board when the MLB draft rolls around.

Skenes transferred to LSU from Air Force last summer and his presence has been invaluable with much of LSU’s pitching staff struggling to find their footing behind him. Skenes will also be one of the first players selected and could be the first pitcher.

Both players will look to cement their legacy over the next few weeks as LSU continues its postseason run.

Trey Lipscomb named finalist for Dick Howser Trophy

Tennessee third baseman Trey Lipscomb named finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy.

Tennessee senior third baseman Trey Lipscomb was named as one of five finalists for the 35th Dick Howser Trophy, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Thursday.

The Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, is given in memory of Howser, the former Florida State All-America shortstop. He also served as the Kansas City Royals’ manager and died of brain cancer in 1987.

The award is considered by many to be as college baseball’s most prestigious honor.

Criteria for consideration of the trophy includes performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage — qualities that were exemplified by the way Howser lived his life.

Lipscomb is the first Tennessee baseball player to be a finalist for the award since Chris Burke in 2001.

Todd Helton won the award in 1995.

The other 2022 finalists include Connor Hjerpe (Oregon State), Ivan Melendez (Texas), Kevin Parada (Georgia Tech) and Max Wagner (Clemson).

The Dick Howser Trophy winner will be announced June 17.

Sophomore Max Wagner (Green Bay, Wis.) was named one of five finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, presented to the national player-of-the-year, on Thursday. The winner will be announced on June 17.

Connor Hjerpe (Oregon State), Trey Lipscomb (Tennessee), Ivan Melendez (Texas) and Kevin Parada (Georgia Tech) join Wagner as finalists for the prestigious award. Each of these five finalists symbolizes the major principles of character, leadership, desire and competitive spirit exhibited by Dick Howser, the All-America shortstop, head coach at Florida State and manager of the 1985 World Series champion Kansas City Royals.

Wagner, the ACC Player-of-the-Year and a first-team All-American, led the 2022 Tigers in batting average (.369), runs (66), hits (75), doubles (15), homers (27), RBIs (76), total bases (173), slugging percentage (.852), walks (45) and on-base percentage (.496). He is tied for third in the nation in home runs and is second in slugging percentage. His 27 homers tied the school season record and are tied for third most in a season in ACC history as well.

Wagner hit a home run every 7.5 at bats in 2022, easily setting a school record, and his .852 slugging percentage was second highest in a season in school history. He also reached base via a hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in each of the last 42 games.

Three former Tigers, Kris Benson (1996), Khalil Greene (2002) and Seth Beer (2016), have won the Dick Howser Trophy.
