Clemson has missed out on one of the top remaining targets on its recruiting board.

The Tigers have one scholarship remaining for the 2022-23 season and are active in the transfer portal in an attempt to fill it. But that won’t be former Wichita State guard Dexter Dennis, who committed to Texas A&M on Friday.

Dennis, the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year this past season, announced his commitment via social media. Clemson hosted the 6-foot-5, 210-pounder on a visit last month. He also visited Indiana before picking the SEC school.

Transfer portal news: Aggie Mens Basketball finalists for star guard

Texas A&M Basketball Transfer portal news: Aggies finalists for star guard

The Texas A&M basketball program has seen its fair share of ups and downs coming off of one of its best seasons in program history ending with a record of  27-13 and 9-9 in SEC play. After frustratingly being left out of the NCAA tournament at the end of the regular season, Buzz Williams is now a man on a mission to build the 2022-23 Aggie basketball squad into a contender once again, and hopefully an NCAA tournament participant.

To achieve those goals, Williams must find replacements for the recent departures of Hassan Diarra and Aaron Cash who both entered the transfer portal in April. However, transfer forwards Andersson Garcia and Julius Marble committed to the Aggies on Monday, and it seems like a trend is starting in the portal as Witchita State transfer Dexter Dennis has placed Texas A&M in his “Final 6” teams, competing with the likes of Texas, Indiana, Kansas State, Vanderbilt, and Clemson.

Dennis, standing at 6’5″, 210lb, hails from Baker, Louisiana, and averaged over 30 minutes per game, 8.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists during the 2021-2022 season with the shockers. Offensively, Dennis is a reliable scorer inside and out, who averaged a 35.0% field goal percentage and a 29.7 percent three-point percentage for the year.

The Aggies need depth at the guard position, and with four years of starting experience for one of the best basketball programs in the county, Dexter Dennis would be a great addition to the Aggies basketball squad in the quest to reach the  big dance.

Transfer guard puts Clemson in top six

Clemson lands in the final six of a starting-caliber transfer guard.

Clemson basketball has dipped its toes into the transfer portal multiple times this offseason, and the program could be adding Wichita State transfer guard Dexter Dennis, who put the Tigers in his final six on Wednesday.

Along with Clemson, the 6-foot-5 guard has Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas State, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt as his potential new school. Dennis has seen plenty of action with four years of experience at Wichita State. In 27 games last season, he scored 8.4 points per game on 35.3% from the field, also grabbing five rebounds per game.

In 2019, Dennis was named to the AAC All-Freshman Team after scoring 8.4 points per game and shooting 40% from the 3-point line.

If Dennis were to join the Tigers, he would join a guard group consisting of Chase Hunter, Josh Beadle, Alex Hemenway and incoming freshman Dillon Hunter, brother of Chase. The Tigers were thought to have added Princeton transfer guard Jaelin Llewellyn, who committed to the Tigers in April, but he backed out and recently chose Michigan as his new school.

Clemson’s men’s basketball team has made the cut for one of its top remaining targets in the transfer portal.

The Tigers are in the running for former Wichita State guard Dexter Dennis, who has revealed his list of finalists. Dennis announced via social media Wednesday that Clemson is one of six schools he’s still considering.

Clemson, which recently hosted Dennis for a visit, is competing with Vanderbilt, Indiana, Georgia Tech, Kansas State and Texas A&M for Dennis’ signature. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder has one season of eligibility left after spending four seasons at Wichita State.

Dennis averaged 8.4 points and 5.0 rebounds this past season. He shot 35.3% from the field.

Clemson has one scholarship remaining for next season after recently getting a commitment from Boston College transfer Brevin Galloway.
