Bucs LB Devin White: ‘I’m a big boy now’

See what Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie linebacker Devin White had to say after his big performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday could very well be labeled as the coming out party for rookie linebacker Devin White.

The fifth overall pick in April’s draft had perhaps his best game of the season, kicking things off in the first quarter by intercepting quarterback Nick Foles on Jacksonville’s opening drive and then scooping up a fumble and taking it to the house on the Jags’ next possession.

White was a beast all day long, even body-slamming former LSU teammate and current Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette. After the game, White spoke about his big day and going up against the imposing back.

(Via the Tampa Bay Times):

“I was just trying to let him know I’m in the league, I’m a big boy now. I’m not the same freshman from LSU. My game done rose to another level… It’s my time, I guess. I’ve been set back this year, but I never complained, and I also kept my head down and kept working. It’s time for me to show out. It’s time for me to show the world what I can do, and it’s time for me to keep building on it.”

White’s season got off to a rough start as he dealt with tonsillitis leading up to Week 1 and then suffered a knee sprain in Week 2 that sidelined him several weeks. Now, however, he is showing the Bucs and the rest of the league why he was considered the best linebacker in his draft class.

Arians on Devin White: ‘He’s really come into his own’

See what Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians had to say about rookie linebacker Devin White following the team’s win over the Jags.

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted LSU linebacker Devin White with the fifth overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, the team had big expectations for the collegiate star. After all, White was the first linebacker Tampa Bay had selected in round one since Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks in 1995.

The hype surrounding White built up in training camp and the preseason, when some experts picked him as the favorite for the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.

But, White’s season got off to a bumpy start. In the week leading up to the home opener against the 49ers, White lost nearly 10 pounds while dealing with tonsillitis. Then, in Week 2 he suffered a knee sprain early in the game that ended up sidelining him for several weeks, leading many to wonder if White’s rookie year was going to be a bust.

Fortunately, since the rookie’s return to the lineup he’s been a force to be reckoned with, and he has Bucs fans and coaches excited about the future of this young defense.

In Week 13’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, White made history by becoming the first rookie in franchise history to have an interception, fumble recovery and defensive touchdown in the same game. Did I mention he did all that in the first quarter?

White’s big day helped the Buccaneers secure the 28-11 win, and head coach Bruce Arians sung the rookie’s praises after the game.

Devin White delivers locker room speech after Bucs’ big win over Jags

Watch Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie linebacker deliver a postgame speech to his team after the Bucs’ 28-11 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers tamed the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road Sunday, dominating from start to finish in an impressive 28-11 win that gave the Bucs their first back-to-back wins of the season.

At 5-7, Tampa Bay now sits in second place in the NFC South. One of the big reasons for their win was the stellar performance of rookie first-round pick Devin White, who showed why many people had him pegged as a preseason favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The former LSU product had an interception, fumble recovery and defensive touchdown in the first quarter, helping the Bucs jump out to an early 15-0 lead.

Not surprisingly, after the game, White was the one to deliver an inspiring postgame speech in the locker room to his team.

Take a look.

Instant analysis: Bucs down Jags, win back-to-back games for first time this year

See who the heroes of the game were for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their 28-11 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It may have taken 13 weeks, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are beginning to look more and more like the team we all thought we were going to see when Bruce Arians came aboard as head coach.

The Bucs, fresh off last week’s big road win over the Atlanta Falcons, kept the momentum going in their 28-11 thrashing of the in-state rival Jacksonville Jaguars. It was an another complete performance by this team and there are several players worthy of recognition.

With that, here are some instant thoughts and analysis from Tampa Bay’s big win.

Good Jameis shows up (mostly)

Quarterback Jameis Winston entered today with 20 interceptions on the year, already a career high for a season. While Winston had no touchdown passes in the team’s win, he also didn’t throw an interception. He’d thrown eight picks in his last three games, so he deserves credit for not making bad choices and forcing throws like he’s done in the past. He did have another lost fumble, but his performance today is worth celebrating. Winston has taken a lot of heat this season for his turnover problems, and rightfully so, but today was a good example of how well this offense can operate when the quarterback takes care of the ball.

Rookies shine on defense

Linebacker Devin White had a monster first quarter today, which really set the tone for this team. The rookie out of LSU had an interception on Jacksonville’s first drive, ultimately leading to a Peyton Barber 15-yard touchdown run, and then had a fumble recovery and touchdown on Jacksonville’s next possession when Nick Foles fumbled the ball after being sacked by Shaq Barrett. Then, after Foles was replaced in the second half by Gardner Minshew, rookie cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting helped stop a Jags comeback attempt by intercepting Minshew on a 3rd-and-goal from the Tampa Bay 2-yard line. A touchdown and extra point would’ve cut the Bucs’ lead to 25-18. That interception by Murphy-Bunting helped seal the win.

Unlikely receiving duo

While Mike Evans and Chris Godwin have been the dynamic receiving duo for the Buccaneers this season, they took a backseat today to Breshad Perriman and O.J. Howard, who were the top two receivers against the Jags. Perriman finished with a season-high five receptions for 87 yards, while Howard, who has had a tumultuous season, finished the day with five catches for 61 yards. Evans, meanwhile, had four receptions for 53 yards, while Godwin finished with four receptions for 50 yards. If the Buccaneers can spread the ball around and get guys like Perriman and Howard involved more often, this team will be unstoppable.

Tampa Bay returns home next week to take on the Indianapolis Colts.

Rookie LB Devin White just made Buccaneers history

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie linebacker Devin White had a touchdown and interception in the first quarter against the Jaguars.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ended the first quarter of today’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a 15-0 lead, and they can thank rookie linebacker Devin White for that.

White, the fifth overall pick in April’s NFL draft, intercepted Jags quarterback Nick Foles on Jacksonville’s opening drive, which eventually led to a touchdown by Bucs running back Peyton Barber. Then, on Jacksonville’s next possession, Foles fumbled the ball after being sacked by Shaq Barrett, and lo and behold, White was there to scoop up the ball and take it 14 yards to the house.

Not only did White’s big first quarter help Tampa Bay build a comfortable lead, but he also made a bit of history along the way.

Take a look.

White has come on strong the second half of the season after struggling through the first few weeks. He battled tonsillitis in the week leading up to the team’s opener against the San Francisco 49ers and then suffered a knee sprain in Week 2’s win over the Carolina Panthers, which kept him out for several weeks.

Over the last month, however, White has been a beast, tackling punters and chasing down running backs. Now, he can add this piece of history to his ever-growing NFL resume.

Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks selected to the NFL 100 All-Time Team

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks found a spot on a very exclusive list.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneer selected LSU linebacker Devin White with the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, making him the first linebacker selected in the first round by the Bucs in over two decades.

The last linebacker they took in the first round? Just a guy named Derrick Brooks, who they took 28th overall in the 1995 draft.

White has a long way to go before he starts drawing comparisons to Brooks, whose Hall of Fame career included bringing a championship to Tampa Bay with a victory in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Not surprisingly, Brooks was recently named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team, and he took a moment on Twitter to thank all his supporters.

Congrats to Brooks on a well-deserved honor.

Bucs Week 12 Player of the Game: WR Chris Godwin

Seven receptions, 184 yards and two touchdowns is how Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin finished out the Bucs’ 35-22 over the Atlanta Falcons. There are some cases for players like Devin White, Carlton Davis, and even Jameis Winston to be our player of the week, however, it’s hard to go against the tremendous production of Godwin today.

Midway through the first quarter, Winston connected with Godwin on a 71-yard touchdown pass. The coverage was good and perhaps the window was too tight, but Godwin hauled it in while beating the defense on his way to the end zone.

In the second quarter, Winston threw the ball from the Falcons’ one-yard line, well behind Godwin, who was able to turn around and reel it in for his second score of the day, putting the Bucs up 13-10 at that point.

Congratulations to Godwin for winning the Bucs Wire Player of the Game!

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have lost yesterday’s divisional rematch against the New Orleans Saints, but one of the big takeaways from the game was the continued growth of rookie linebacker Devin White.

The former LSU star, who was selected fifth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, had a rough go of things to start the season. Leading up to Week 1’s opener, White struggled with tonsillitis and lost 10 pounds because of the illness. Then, in Week 2, he suffered a knee sprain that sidelined him for several weeks.

Now healthy, White has been showing off some of the crazy athleticism that had many people picking him as a preseason favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year.

In Week 8’s loss to the Tennessee Titans, White had a monster tackle on Titans punter Brett Kern during a trick play. White’s tackle knocked the ball out of Kern’s hand and was returned for a Bucs touchdown, but the refs inexplicably called Kern down by contact.

The following week in Seattle, White prevented a touchdown run by Seahawks running back Chris Carson, sprinting down field like a bat out of hell to catch him.

And then, in yesterday’s loss to the Saints, White set a new career-high with 13 tackles, 11 of which were solo. He also had some highlight-worthy moments, like the one below.

While the team may be just 3-7, seeing White’s emergence into a star linebacker bodes well for this defense’s future.

Shades of Derrick Brooks, perhaps?
