Watch: Jaguars LB Devin Lloyd intercepts bobbled ball vs. Chargers

Devin Lloyd already has two interceptions this season and the Jaguars have six.

The Jacksonville Jaguars defense picked up where they left off after a 24-0 shutout of the Indianapolis Colts by dominating early against the Los Angeles Chargers.

After forcing two three-and-outs on the Chargers’ first two possessions, rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd got his second interception of the season on the first play of Los Angeles’ third drive.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had just one interception on the year prior to his second quarter throw that was caught by Lloyd. However, the pick was mostly the fault of running back Sony Michel, who bobbled the pass before Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell got his hands on it.

The Jaguars entered Week 3 with five interceptions, tied for the most in the NFL. Lloyd, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, got his first career pick off a deflected pass against the Colts.

Jacksonville failed to score a touchdown after the interception set them up deep in the red zone, settling instead for a short field goal to make it 6-0 in the second quarter.

5 studs, 0 duds from the Jaguars’ 24-0 win vs. the Colts

Choosing studs and duds is a weekly column around here, but how in the world could I pick any duds from the Jaguars’ 24-0 win Sunday?

Choosing studs and duds is a weekly column around here, but how in the world could I pick any duds from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 24-0 win Sunday?

The Jaguars methodically picked apart the Indianapolis Colts defense on lengthy touchdown drives, forced five turnovers (three interceptions and two on downs), and recorded their first shutout in four years.

So here’s an all-studs edition with the five players who stood out most in the dominant victory:

Jaguars DC Mike Caldwell: Rookie LB Devin Lloyd will ‘settle down’ after jittery first start

Devin Lloyd was “trying to make every play” and will benefit from settling down, according to DC Mike Caldwell

Jacksonville Jaguars first-round rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd will benefit from settling into his role within the defense, according to defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell.

On Thursday, Caldwell said that Lloyd was trying to do a little too much during his regular season debut.

“He started off, had some great moments and had a couple that he can learn from,” Caldwell said. “I think, again, he was excited. He was really trying to make every play. He’ll settle down, and the plays will come to him, and he’ll continue to do it.

“First game of the season, everybody’s going to be amped up, and everybody’s ready to go. You just have to take a deep breath, calm down, and do what you’ve done in practice. The plays don’t change. Your technique won’t change. Just go out there and relax and play the game you’ve always played.”

Lloyd, 23, was the 27th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft after starring at Utah. In his first NFL action, the rookie linebacker finished with a team-leading 11 tackles and was stout against the run. Lloyd also thwarted a two-point conversion attempt with a sack of Carson Wentz that didn’t land in the statbook.

However, Lloyd missed some tackles in space against the Washington Commanders’ shifty receivers.

On Monday, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said that Lloyd played “okay” against the Commanders with “room for improvement.”

5 players to watch in Jaguars vs. Commanders

These five players could make or break the #Jaguars’ hopes of securing a win in Week 1.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will kick off their regular season on the road tomorrow against the Washington Commanders. Both teams are in the midst of rebuilds, seeking to prove that they can be contenders in 2022 after disappointing campaigns last year.

This game will be a good test for the Jaguars, and with several key matchups set to determine the outcome, five players, in particular, are set to make or break Jacksonville’s hopes of getting their campaign off to a fast start.

Here are the players to keep your eye on in the Week 1 tilt:

Doug Pederson on Jaguars LB Devin Lloyd: ‘You love his athleticism’

Doug Pederson raved about rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd, who is set to start in his first NFL game Sunday.

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson told reporters Friday all about what makes rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd a special prospect for the up-and-coming Jaguars.

“You love his athleticism; you love his height,” Pederson said. “He’s long, and it’s hard to throw balls over him in practice, and he’s been able to bat some things down and do some really good things in practice. He just has to continue to do that within the scheme, just understanding his role. I think he’s in a good place mentally just watching him out there and talking to him a little bit, and physically, he’s doing good and in a good spot.”

Though first-overall pick Travon Walker is likely to get more attention as a Defensive Rookie of the Year contender, Lloyd is another first round pick set to play a significant role in year one.

It will still take a team effort for the Jaguars to improve their abysmal 3-14 record from last season, but much of the turnaround relies on the contributions from younger players like Lloyd and Walker.

Jaguars list Devin Lloyd, Jawaan Taylor as starters in Week 1 depth chart

Devin Lloyd and Jawaan Taylor are among the starters in the Jaguars’ Week 1 depth chart release.

The Jacksonville Jaguars appear set to start Jawaan Taylor at right tackle and Devin Lloyd at inside linebacker for a season opener against the Washington Commanders.

On Tuesday, four days ahead of the Week 1 kickoff in Washington, the Jaguars released their first official depth chart since cutting the roster down to 53 players. It shows Lloyd, Taylor, and Ben Bartch as starters.

On Monday, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson played coy about his Week 1 starting lineup, telling reporters that they may not find out the winners of a few positional battles until Sunday.

When asked in particular about a battle between third-round rookie Chad Muma and first-rounder Devin Lloyd, Pederson said practices ahead of the opener loomed large.

“I honestly don’t know because we’ve got to get through Wednesday and Thursday first, and I’ll have an answer for you later in the week,” Pederson said of the linebacker battle.

There have also been a couple battles on the offensive line with Ben Bartch and Tyler Shatley competing at left guard, as well as Walker Little and Taylor at right tackle. Pederson said the team already knows what the lineup looks like, but he wasn’t ready to reveal it to the public.

The depth chart release doesn’t necessarily mean Pederson won’t pull a fast one Sunday, but it does seem that the surprise may have been spoiled.

Foyesade Oluokun says Devin Lloyd has the potential to be ‘really special’

The #Jaguars’ linebackers hope to play a huge part in the team’s rebuild this season.

In his preseason debut against the Atlanta Falcons, Devin Lloyd made a great first impression in his first action as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. His teammates seemed to recognize that they were witnessing something special, especially veteran linebacker Foyesade Oluokun, who commented on Lloyd’s performance at Monday’s press conference.

After fielding questions about the defense at large, Oluokun made sure to praise the rookie linebacker for his effort, noting the ease with which Lloyd has transitioned to the pace of the NFL.

“It’s good for him, for sure,” Oluokun said of Lloyd’s usage against Atlanta. “Now he gets to work off what he put on tape. He’s a great athlete, and I think he has potential to be really special. I was just happy to see him running around out there, get that confidence in and be able to make plays on the ball and keep building off that, so I’m excited for him.”

This season will be a test of Jacksonville’s mettle as they seek to prove they’re better than last year’s squad. Two failed seasons in a row have left the Jaguars with a reputation as the league’s doormat, but after loading up on talent in free agency and the draft, the team hopes it’s primed for something special in 2022.

The contributions of Lloyd and Oluokun will be critical factors in the success of the defense, and if the comments from Monday’s media availability are any indication, the players are on track to live up to their potential this season.

It will take a full team effort, though, and only in conjunction with the new coaching staff will the defense find itself as one of the NFL’s premier units. From top to bottom, the Jaguars have looked to revamp what their team looks like on both sides of the ball, but with a second-year quarterback in his first year of a new system, the onus is on the defense to make Jacksonville a competitor this season.

Jaguars players are tuned in for college football kickoff

These four #Jaguars are all-in on their alma maters’ college football kickoffs

A week before the Jacksonville Jaguars kick off their 2022 redemption campaign, the team took to social media to show its players excited about the college football season. Across the NFL’s 32 teams nearly every rostered player got their career started at the collegiate level, whether playing football or basketball. They will all be tuned in for the first games of their former school’s seasons this week.

Here are the Jaguars who will be glued to their couch this weekend as their alma maters take on their first challenges of the year:

Chad Muma pushing Devin Lloyd for first team snaps in Week 1

Third-round pick Chad Muma has a legitimate chance to start for the #Jaguars in Week 1.

As two of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ most promising rookies, linebackers Chad Muma and Devin Lloyd are in a fierce competition for a starting spot in the middle of the team’s defense in Week 1. Lloyd was the prohibitive favorite for the spot before a training camp injury gave Muma the edge after he played well in the Jaguars’ preseason games.

Now. just a little over a week before the season kicks off, the two are neck and neck to become a fixture on Jacksonville’s defense Defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell commented on the position battle in a press conference on Wednesday, saying only that both players would see action against the Washington Commanders.

“Well, right now we’re still working through that,” He explained when asked if Lloyd might earn the start in Week 1. “Chad [Muma] has had a bunch of reps, and everybody will play the first game of the season and everybody will play and get in the flow. There’s no pitch count for [Devin Lloyd], we’ll get him out there and just let him go when he needs to go, let Chad go when he needs to go, same way with Foye [Foyesade Oluokun] and Shaq [Quarterman].”

It’d be a huge upset for Lloyd if Muma sweeps in to make the team’s first start of the season at inside linebacker, but after the exceptional preseason he had, the honor of leading the defense would be well deserved. If it weren’t for the injury Lloyd sustained early in the training camp process, indications are that he would’ve been the Jaguars’ best option.

Even if Lloyd is fully healthy, Jacksonville may prefer that their starting inside linebackers be adjusted to the pace and rigor of an NFL game. With limited experience gained last week against the Atlanta Falcons backups, it may behoove the Jaguars coaching staff to let Lloyd take a few matchups to get into a groove before throwing him to the wolves.

Jaguars rookie LB Travon Walker showers Devin Lloyd with praise after first practice back

#Jaguars top pick Travon Walker showers Devin Lloyd with praise after first practice following injury.

The final game of the preseason is already upon us, and the Jacksonville Jaguars need a win in the worst way. With starters likely to only see a drive or two of meaningful action, it’ll take all hands on deck to finish the job against the Atlanta to finish the preseason with at least one win under their belt.

Jacksonville’s fans can’t stand much more losing. After two first overall picks in as many seasons, the winds of change are in the air, and 2022 top-selection Travon Walker has some ideas about where his defensive unit is headed. Asked about fellow rookie Devin Lloyd, Waker showered high praise on the linebacker, saying that he is acclimating well to the pace of the pro game after an extended absence in the preseason.

“Just to see Devin out there yesterday in full pads for the first time, he was flying around, looking good, filling gaps, doing what he’s supposed to do,” Walker said of his fellow rookie. “It wasn’t a surprise because I’ve watched film on him, seen him do it on film, but to actually have him out there on the field with me flying around like he was, I’m excited to see how he’s going to be.”

His admiration for Lloyd was apparent, as Walker continued by praising the linebacker’s drive and effort.

“He’s one of those guys,” Walker explained. “He’s very energetic, he has a very high motor, like once Devin gets going, it’s going to be hard to slow him down. He’s one of those type guys that just stay on it. He pushes himself.”

With just one game to get into regular season form, Lloyd will be up for a tough battle against Atlanta but should be able to make something of this first opportunity to show he was worthy of his high draft slot. To hear Walker tell it, he is already well on his way to making a career for himself, based on practices alone.
