Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month on Thursday.

The first-round pick finished the month of September with 24 tackles, two interceptions, and an NFL-best six passes defended in three games played. Earlier this week, Lloyd jumped ahead of the Jaguars’ No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker in the race for Defensive Rookie of the Year, according to oddsmakers.

Lloyd is the fifth player in Jaguars history to earn Defensive Rookie of the Month honors, and the first since linebacker Clint Ingram in 2006. The other three were Tony Brackens (1996), Donovin Darius (1998), and Rashean Mathis (2003).

He’s also the third Jaguars player in the last four seasons to be a Rookie of the Month, joining the team’s former quarterback Gardner Minshew and current running back James Robinson.

Lloyd previously starred at the University of Utah where he was a two-time First Team All-Pac-12 linebacker and a consensus All-American as a senior. The Jaguars picked Lloyd with the No. 27 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft after trading second-, fourth-, and sixth-round selections to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to get another first-rounder.

Devin Lloyd called his shot: the next one is a pick six.

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd called his shot Sunday after recording his second interception of the season. In a video posted by the Jaguars, Lloyd told his teammate that he’s taking his next pick to the house.

Lloyd, who turns 24 on Friday, was tackled five yards short of his first career pick six when he caught a bobbled pass off the hands of Los Angeles Chargers running back Sony Michel.

On the sideline, Jaguars linebacker Foye Oluokun told Lloyd it would’ve been a touchdown if he got a chance to get out front and block for the rookie.

“I’m going to score next time,” Lloyd is shown telling Oluokun.

Lloyd is one of the frontrunners for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year after starting his career with two interceptions, six passes defended, and 24 tackles through his first three games.

Only Detroit Lions pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson has better odds at becoming the Defensive Rookie of the Year on Tipico Sportsbook after Week 3. The Jaguars’ No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker has tumbled out of the top five and is among a group of players with the sixth best odds.

On Tuesday morning, NFL Network analyst Peter Schrager said that Lloyd “is the Defensive Rookie of the Year right now, hands down” for his play through the first three weeks.

Hutchinson sacked Carson Wentz three times in the Lions’ 36-27 win over the Washington Commanders in Week 2, but was held without a sack in Weeks 1 and 3.

Walker briefly led the Rookie of the Year race, according to oddsmakers, after opening his season with a sack and interception in Week 1.
