Devin Harper will need to build on redshirt rookie year for Cowboys

Harper was injured early in his rookie season but he’s shown enough to think he’ll have some role on the 2023 Cowboys. | From @ReidHanson

The Cowboys selected linebacker Devin Harper from Oklahoma State in the sixth round last season. The selection was seen as reach to some and more project than plug-and-play to most.

Harper tested fantastically in the pre-draft process. His relative athletic score (RAS) was 9.5 on a 0-10 scale with him earning elite status on the composite speed grade. It seemed as though he checked all the physical boxes for Will McClay and team, and possessed more than enough physical ability to play at the professional level.

It wasn’t until 2021, Harper’s sixth college season (a college career that featured a redshirt season and a COVID season), where he really took on a prominent role on defense. His final season, he finished second on the team in tackles and second team All-Academic for the Big 12.

He was cast on the Cowboys as a special teams weapon from the start. At 24-years-old, he was relatively old for an NFL rookie, but he was viewed as a developmental role player nonetheless.

An Achilles injury ended his season prematurely.  Like the Matt Waletzko pick before him, Harper’s rookie season unfolded like a redshirt season and his NFL career would have to be put on hold.

Harper played in just three games in 2022, playing a big role on special teams (52 snaps) but not logging a single defensive snap.

Dallas remains fairly fluid at the linebacker position, which will likely help Harper’s odds of carving out a role on defense. Damone Clark is a virtual lock ahead of Harper on the depth chart but other than that, things could potentially open up. Leighton Vander Esch and Anthony Barr are free agents and Jabril Cox has yet to step up into his preordained role as a draft steal.

With no reason to think otherwise, Harper’s projection remains the same. He will likely be a special teams fixture in 2023 with an eye on a sub-package role on defense.

Cowboys open 21-day window for Fehoko, Harper; add CB to practice squad

Even if they keep winning playoff games, the Cowboys are running out of days in what will constitute their 2022 season. But a trio of young players is looking to make the most of the late opportunity, perhaps even getting into some postseason action.

The Cowboys on Thursday opened the 21-day practice windows for wide receiver Simi Fehoko and linebacker Devin Harper, allowing them to return to work with the team and possibly be added to the 53-man roster within the next three weeks.

Fehoko, in his second year out of Stanford, recorded three catches in five game appearances this season before suffering a shoulder injury in practice just before the Week 6 contest at Philadelphia. He’s been on injured reserve since then.

Harper is in his rookie campaign, a sixth-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State. He saw special teams snaps over the Cowboys’ first three games of 2022 as he tried to work his way into the team’s talented linebacker corps. He was placed on IR in late October after dealing with an Achilles issue.

The Cowboys also welcomed a new man to the practice squad, signing defensive back Sheldrick Redwine on Thursday. A fourth-round pick of the Browns in the 2019 draft, the former safety out of the University of Miami then had stints with the Jets, Panthers, Dolphins, and Colts, mostly on those clubs’ practice squads.

He has eight NFL starts over 33 games, with an interception recorded in 2020.

To make room for Redwine, cornerback Mackensie Alexander was moved to the practice squad’s injured list. The veteran had been signed in December and saw just a handful of defensive snaps against the Eagles in Week 16.

Predicting 7 players Cowboys will make inactive vs Buccaneers

Here’s @KDDrummondNFL taking a look at the Cowboys roster, where they have surplus and what their strategy might be in choosing the group that will be inactive.

The Dallas Cowboys have announced their 55-man talent pool they have to choose from for Sunday night’s season opener against the Pirate Ship Brady. Of course NFL rules don’t allow the club to bring all 55 players into the water, rather they have to leave some of their roster on the sideline, playing dress up, hopefully getting motivated to force their way to the game-day roster.

For now though, the Cowboys coaching staff led by Mike McCarthy has another job to do, after the week worth of swim lessons. He and the coordinators will have a battle over which seven end-of-roster guys will be best served staying on the beach.

Starting in the 2020 season, game-day active rosters, which used to be limited to 46 players per team, can be bumped up to 48, as long as at least eight of those 48 are offensive linemen. The Cowboys have eight lineman on the regular roster, and all three backups are much needed. Here’s our best guess at the seven players, who almost to a man have waited all offseason for their chance to play, just to get it snatched from them in a numbers game.

Cowboys select Oklahoma State LB Devin Harper with No. 193 pick

Dallas nabbed another 30 visit and selected Oklahoma State LB Devin Harper, boosting the Cowboys linebacker room with their final pick. | From @CDBurnett7

Dallas has Micah Parsons at the linebacker spot but they added much more at the position. Oklahoma State’s Devin Harper is the latest addition to the group that now features LSU’s Damone Clark as well.

Tyler Browning detailed Harper’s potential fit alongside Parsons, with his athleticism being his biggest advantage.

Harper is another 30 visit, I view as a player you try to stash on your practice squad and let him develop. He can maybe find a home on special teams, but pretty much every aspect of his game could use improvement. He is not reliable in coverage, but it is probably where he shows the most promise. He does not take good pursuit angles, and his tackling is suspect at times. He needs time to develop in coverage, his power, and his pass rushing repertoire. He does present favorable athletic testing as he scored a 9.49 in his RAS score.

The Cowboys stuck to their 30 visits, and Quinn got his guys for the defense. Barring any surprise moves, Harper is the Cowboys’ final pick in the 2022 NFL draft and they addressed the biggest holes on their team well.

Report: Colts to host LB Devin Harper for pre-draft visit

The Colts are reportedly hosting Oklahoma State LB Devin Harper for a pre-draft visit.

The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly hosting Oklahoma State linebacker Devin Harper for a visit ahead of the 2022 NFL draft, per Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network.

Harper didn’t go to the NFL combine but is set to meet with several teams. Wilson reported Tuesday that this will count as a top-30 visit with the Colts.

While Harper didn’t go to the combine, he did work out at his pro day. He measured in at 6-foot-2 and 234 pound with 31 7/8-inch arms while posting a 4.49 in the 40-yard dash. He also posted a 40.5-inch vertical jump.

Harper was a fifth-year senior who recorded 26.5 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks in 59 career games with the Cowboys. He’s likely a late pick on Day 3 or a priority free agent, but those measurables make him someone to keep an eye on for the Colts.
