Can Devin Bush revive his career with the Browns?

Can the Browns get the most out of the former first round pick?

After letting both Anthony Walker Jr. and Sione Takitaki walk in free agency, the Cleveland Browns then added Jordan Hicks and Devin Bush to fill out their linebacker room.

Bush, a former first round pick, will have to compete for a roster spot with the likes of Tony Fields II (who is penciled in as the starting SAM and has starting experience with the Browns) for not only a starting job but for a roster spot as well.

Despite being selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, Bush has not found much footing since he tore his ACL during his second season in the league. The Steelers would go on to decline his fifth-year option, and Bush spent the 2023 season with the Seattle Seahawks.

ESPN’s Aaron Schatz wonders whether or not the addition of Bush, who played well in limited snaps with the Seahawks a year ago, could boost their already stellar defense:

“The Browns played base defense only 16% of the time last season, but they were fantastic with just 3.6 yards allowed per play. Bush played only 250 snaps in Seattle but had better numbers than he did in his final year for the Steelers. Can he help the Browns continue to shut down the run when they bring a third linebacker on the field?”

On paper, it’s easy to see Bush as the Takitaki replacement. Takitaki was their starting SAM linebacker in base defense, however, Takitaki also rotated in at MIKE linebacker. With Jordan Hicks signing to a two-year deal, this is likely not something that Bush will be asked to do unless his play warrants it.

With the selection of the physical Watson, and with Fields II established on the roster, Bush is not a lock to make the roster.

This is not to say the former first rounder cannot find his footing with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and bounce back, but placing any real expectations on him to be an X-factor or impact player on the defense is premature.

At just 26 years of age, however, the Browns could find a needle in the haystack if Schwartz can bring the former Michigan linebacker back to life in 2024.

Ranking the 4 most-important free agents the Seahawks should re-sign in 2024

The players weren’t the problem.

The Seahawks are in the midst of interviewing candidates for their open head coach position for a reason. The shock of Pete Carroll’s removal may not have fully set in for many fans, but the hard truth is that Carroll’s team underperformed this season given the level of talent they had – and Carroll’s defenses had been below average far longer than that.

A coach who occasionally zigged where Carroll would have zagged could have won this team 2-3 more games this year and made the playoffs. That’s why Carroll is now an “advisor” for the team and someone else will be replacing him soon.

To put it another way, the players weren’t the problem.

The team’s salary cap situation won’t make it easy, but Seattle should try to retain at least a handful of defensive free agents who could push this team back into the postseason as soon as 2024 with the right leadership. Here are the top four they should re-sign.

12 outstanding individual Pro Football Focus grades for the Seahawks in Week 17

Sunday’s loss to the Steelers should be a sobering wakeup call.

The Seahawks have apparently used up all of their dramatic comeback win cards for the season. Sunday’s loss to the Steelers should be a sobering wakeup call for a team that had an all-time terrible tackling performance. In that part of the game, only off-ball linebacker Devin Bush showed any real promise – and his PFF grade reflects that. Seattle’s defense also got strong efforts from Leonard Williams and Jarran Reed up front and Riq Woolen outside. The rest of it was pretty ugly on that side of the ball, though.

Offensively, a familiar theme played out. While his numbers may not match what he did against Dallas, this was the third straight start for Geno Smith where he was under significant pressure by the opponent’s pass rush and still put together an incredibly impressive performance. Geno’s over-80 grade along with a solid game from the tight ends led the offense.

Here are 12 of the top individual PFF grades for the team this week.

Steelers vs Seahwks: 4 big storylines this week

The Steelers need another big game out of Mason Rudolph and the offense needs to shut Devin Bush up.

The playoffs are on the line this week for the Pittsburgh Steelers but when you dig a little deeper there are even more subplots at work that make this game a must-watch. Here are our big storylines to watch this week beyond the playoffs.

Here are seven things to know about these two teams heading into a critical Week 17 matchup.

Seahawks list Jordyn Brooks as questionable to return vs. Titans

Now the Seahawks are listing him as questionable to return with an ankle injury.

The Seahawks just started the second quarter of a scoreless classic trap game against the Titans.Β More bad news – Jordyn Brooks may be done for the day.

Brooks was spotted on the CBS broadcast limping off the field with the aid of two trainers then put in the blue medical tent. Now the Seahawks are listing him as questionable to return with an ankle injury.

The next man up at linebacker for Seattle is Devin Bush, who was already putting in a significant role as a big nickel linebacker against the Titans run game. Now Bush will be gettting an even more significant role, at least as long as Brooks remains out.

The Titans lead 7-0 courtesy of a trick play touchdown pass by Derrick Henry.

Seahawks LB Devin Bush mocks former team after loss

Devin Bush took to Twitter to take a shot at his former team.

The Pittsburgh Steelers reached a new low for the season on Saturday with their 31-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. The loss dropped the Steelers to 7-7 and out of the playoff picture but it was more about how poorly the team has played the last three weeks than the ultimate outcome.

This brought former Steelers linebacker and current Seattle Seahawks linebacker Devin Bush out of hibernation to mock the team via Twitter when he sent this out just after the Steelers game ended.

It’s easy for Bush to punch down on the Steelers now that he’s on another team. Pittsburgh traded up to get Bush and he’s turned out to be maybe the biggest NFL draft bust of the Kevin Colbert era. Bush signed with Seattle to try and get his career on track but it’s been more of the same. Bush has three tackles this season and seems to be no better off there. But keep sending out those tweets.

Seahawks Week 2 injury report: 3 players DNP

Some positive news on the injury front

The Seattle Seahawks are licking their wounds following their embarrassing 30-13 home opening loss to the Los Angeles Rams… both literally and figuratively. Unfortunately, right tackle Abe Lucas has been moved to injured reserve. Despite an initial positive(ish) report after the game, it seems Lucas’ knee issue is far more serious than initially thought.

The good news is strong safety Jamal Adams and cornerback Devon Witherspoon are back in action, somewhat. This will be a very telling week to see if they can finally make their 2023 debut against the Detroit Lions.

The full injury report goes as follows:

Here’s a few injury updates we got from Carroll and the beat writers on Wednesday.

We won’t see the first Seahawks injury report of the season until next Wednesday, so for now we have to rely on what head coach Pete Carroll deems to share with the media after practice.

Pete Carroll: Devin Bush suffered a concussion vs. Packers

Head coach Pete Carroll told reporters Bush suffered a concussion.

The Seahawks did not escape today’s preseason finale against the Packers unscathed. They lost the game 19-15, and also suffered what sound like a few relatively minor injuries. The one possible exception there is linebacker Devin Bush, who had to leave the game after getting hurt on a punt.

After it was over, head coach Pete Carroll told reporters Bush suffered a concussion. He also says safety Joey Blount left with a shoulder injury.

Bush was expected to take over the starting inside linebacker spot next to Bobby Wagner when the season started.

However, Jordyn Brooks recently was activated from the PUP list and appears to be ready to resume his duties – Carroll told reporters after the game he’d be “shocked” if Brooks isn’t playing Week 1 against the Rams.
