Lions offer injury updates on Sam LaPorta and Taylor Decker

Lions coach Dan Campbell offers injury updates on Sam LaPorta and Taylor Decker after the Week 10 win in Houston

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell offered up some encouraging health updates on a couple of key Lions offensive players.

In his Monday press conference after the team’s comeback Week 10 win in Houston, Campbell gave vaguely positive status reports on left tackle Taylor Decker and tight end Sam LaPorta. Decker missed Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury, while LaPorta left the game in the second half with a shoulder injury of his own.

“Decker’s questionable but trending the right way,” Campbell said of the veteran left tackle. That’s an unofficial status designation by Campbell; the team doesn’t determine an official game status until after Friday’s practice.

Campbell offered a little more detail on LaPorta, leaving his status for the Week 11 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars up in the air,

“Yeah, it’s still – look, it’ll be day-to-day but not – we don’t feel like this is something like, ‘Oh, man, this going to be a long, nagging injury.’ I think we’ll get through it. I’m hopeful this week, but I can’t say that – he’s questionable.”

Lions injury update: An offensive lineman joins the team’s practice injury report

Lions injury update: An offensive lineman joins the team’s practice injury report, with left tackle Taylor Decker limited on Thursday

The Detroit Lions head to the final practice ahead of the team’s Week 10 trip to Houston in relatively good health. However, Thursday’s practice participation report did feature one new addition after a Wednesday session that saw two defensive contributors sit out with injury.

Linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez and Jalen Reeves-Maybin are still sidelined, and neither should be expected to play in Houston.

The new addition is left tackle Taylor Decker, who was listed as a limited participant with a shoulder. He was not on Wednesday’s injury list, and that practice was an estimated walkthrough.

Newly acquired DE Za’Darius Smith continues to be away from the team after initially reporting. Head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn have both indicated Smith can play on Sunday and is excused from practice this week.

Defensive end Josh Paschal continues to battle back from the removal of a non-cancerous mass from his shoulder. The cancer survivor from his college days at Kentucky missed last week as well. Rookie defensive lineman, who missed Week 9, joined Paschal as a full participant in both of the practices this week.

Lions vs Texans: Wednesday injury report medical analysis

Lions vs Texans: Wednesday injury report medical analysis on the players listed by both teams

The wet Lambeau field probably aided the Lions to a healthy game by slowing everybody down and allowing feet to slip out of dangerous situations like with Jahmyr Gibbs. There were some minor concerns coming out of the game, but the only one that landed on the Wednesday report is Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

Lots of other positive news this week as the Lions welcomed in multiple players including Emmanuel Moseley, Ifeatu Melifonwu, and Za’Darius Smith.

The Texans had two very important players not practice on Wednesday in Nico Collins and Will Anderson.

DETROIT LIONS

Jalen Reeves-Maybin LB (NP) neck

What appeared to be a shoulder injury on video is actually listed here as a neck. Most likely, this is just a soft tissue strain. The more serious concern would be a spinal or nerve issue. It’s reassuring that he was allowed to return to the game late for the onside kick which suggests there were no signs of a spinal problem.

Malcolm Rodriguez LB (NP) ankle

Rodriguez suffered a left ankle sprain early in the Titans game and missed the last game. While the sprain is reportedly minor, the NP makes it unlikely we’ll see him this weekend.

Josh Paschal DE (FP) illness

Clarity on the “illness” was given by Paschal today as he described it as a non-cancerous mass in his shoulder that was excised. Great news that it is not related to his melanoma from 2018. Paschal missed two games but is ready to go this Sunday. No long-term concerns here.

Emmanuel Moseley CB (FP) pec

Moseley’s tore his pec in August and has been out all year. His 21-day practice window opened Wednesday which keeps him tracking along the 16-week timeline of CJ Gardner-Johnson’s pec tear of last year. Expect Moseley to be available around Thanksgiving.

Ifeatu Melifonwu S (FP) ankle

Melifonwu has been out since the middle of preseason with a suspected Achilles issue. His 21-day practice window opened today which is a good sign that he’ll be available later this month.

Za’Darius Smith DE (NP) personal

Just acquired this week from the Browns, Smith may get a personal bye week since the Browns hadn’t had a bye yet and the Lions did. There is nothing to be concerned about here even if he misses the game.

Sione Vaki RB (FP) knee

Vaki hurt his knee late in the Titans game and missed the last game. Video did not show the injury. The FP means he is recovered and is good to go.

Mekhi Wingo DT (FP) ankle

Wingo hurt his ankle presumably in practice last week and missed the last game. The FP confirms the injury is minor and he’ll be ready for Sunday.

Brodric Martin DT (FP) knee

Martin is starting the 2nd week of his 21-day practice window recovering from a right knee hyperextension in August. Expect Martin to be out for the Texans game.

NOTABLES

Jameson Williams returns from his two game suspension.

Jahmyr Gibbs was rolled up on during a tackle last game which put him at risk for a left high ankle sprain and right knee hyperextension. Great news that he is completely absent from the report.

Carlton Davis may have had a right arm stinger last game. Good news that he avoided any shoulder or pec injury.

Penei Sewell appeared to suffer a mild right low ankle sprain vs the Packers which was not significant enough to land him on the report. No concerns for Sunday.

HOUSTON TEXANS

Nico Collins WR (NP) hamstring

The Texans #1 WR was put on IR after straining his hamstring in week five. Since hamstrings can easily get aggravated, a gradual return-to-play is advisable. Thus, the NP on Wednesday very likely keeps him out vs the Lions.

Will Anderson DE (NP) ankle

On video, this star pass-rusher appeared to suffer a left high ankle sprain last game. High ankles can have a longer-than-anticipated recovery time (see Micah Parsons), so there is a good chance he’ll be out on Sunday.

Kenyon Green OG (NP) shoulder

This starting LG hurt his shoulder last game and is reportedly out for the year. Kendrick Green replaced him last game.

NOTABLES

Stefan Diggs, WR, is out for the year with a right ACL.

Mario Edwards, starting DT, is serving a suspension and is out for this game.

Here is the rest of the Texans report:

Dan Campbell updates Brodric Martin’s injury progress back to the Lions lineup

Martin has been out all season, but Campbell offered a timeline for when the big DT will be back

The Detroit Lions defensive line has been devastated by injuries recently. After losing several starters–and then some replacement starters–it was good to hear about some injury progress on the Detroit defensive front.

Head coach Dan Campbell provided that on Friday with an update on second-year defensive tackle Brodric Martin. The reserve nose tackle has been sidelined all season, on injured reserve with a knee injury suffered in the final preseason game.

Martin’s activation clock began this week, meaning the Lions have designated Martin to return from I.R. and have 21 days to either activate him or lose him for the remainder of the season. Campbell talked about what he’s seen in the first few days of Martin’s return to practices.

“It’s hard to say. I mean, it was good to see him out there. He looks like he’s fresh, he certainly has fresh legs. So, really that’s the best I can give you. I mean, it’s good to get him out there, it’s good to continue the development of him, to be able to go against our one O-line.”

Campbell continued, offering something of a more concrete timeline,

“He’s out there going against those guys, and then it’s just a matter of, man, do we feel like after this three weeks he can help us, do we feel like he can really help us, is he healthy enough to help, how is he relative to the rest of the guys on the roster, even practice squad? That’s what it’ll be.”

The “after this three weeks” is a telling comment. With Martin’s clock beginning just this week, Campbell’s phrasing makes it seem as if the Lions are willing to wait until the deadline before activating the big defensive tackle. That would push Martin back to being out until Detroit’s Week 12 trip to Indianapolis to play the Colts.

Lions rule two defensive players out vs. Packers

Lions coach Dan Campbell ruled two defensive players out vs. Packers, including starting defensive end Josh Paschal

The injury woes keep piling up for the Detroit Lions defense. Detroit head coach Dan Campbell declared two Lions defenders out for Sunday’s game with the Packers in Green Bay ahead of Friday’s practice session.

Campbell ruled out projected starting defensive end Josh Paschal in his coaching press conference on Friday morning. Paschal is dealing with an issue related to a recent post-cancer screening. The third-year vet dealt with cancer during his college career at Kentucky. Paschal will miss his second consecutive game.

Campbell downplayed any long-term concerns about Paschal’s condition.

“He’ll be out. He and Malcolm (Rodriguez) will both be out,’ Campbell said. “But no, nothing long-term, which is great news, and we’re hopeful we’ll get him back next week.”

Rodriguez being ruled out is not a surprise. The reserve linebacker was carted off with a knee injury in Sunday’s home win over the Tennessee Titans and has not practiced throughout the week.

Lions Monday medical report after victory over Titans

Breaking down Detroit Lions injuries and medical outlooks from the Week 8 win over the Titans, including Malcolm Rodriguez and Jared Goff

For the Lions this week, déjà vu was a double-edged sword. After another blowout victory, the Lions unfortunately had an injury to another front-seven defensive player in Malcolm Rodriguez. The last time the Lions blew out a team (Cowboys), they lost Aidan Hutchinson and Kyle Peko.

The game was otherwise a healthy one — although you never want to see your QB limping. Fortunately, the injury to Jared Goff does not appear significant.

On Monday, Dan Campbell in his press conference was not asked and did not comment on any injuries in this game.

Here are the injuries I saw along with suspected diagnoses:

Malcolm Rodriguez (1q 12:57) left ankle sprain

On Rodrigo’s first play which was punt coverage, a Titans player crashed into him from the side which likely caused an eversion injury to his left ankle. Eversion injuries can cause high ankle sprains or medial ankle sprains.

He was taped up and returned to the game for one more play which was kickoff coverage. During that play which was his last, his ankle was clearly not stable as it gave out on him.

Immediately after the game, Dan Campbell tentatively stated: “I don’t think it’ll take the rest of the season.”

An update on Monday by @Schultz_Report provided significantly better-than-expected news in that it’s a only minor ankle sprain and he’s expected to miss just one game. That means he should be back for Sunday Night Football vs the Texans.

Jared Goff (1q 7:47) right low ankle sprain

Credit to the Fox broadcast for alerting us to the moment of this injury as it was almost imperceptible in real-time. In slow motion, you can see the right ankle suffer a mild inversion which can cause a low ankle sprain.

A low ankle sprain, if not severe, can be taped and played through. That’s what happened here as Goff returned with a tape job and didn’t miss any plays until garbage time.

Goff may be sore this week and may even have limited or no practice days, but he should play vs the Packers without significant limitations.

Kalif Raymond (4q 8:15) head trauma

After a monster day, Raymond had his head slammed onto the turf. He was holding his head with both hands briefly and was slow in getting up. There were no signs of fencing or loss of consciousness which would have definitively signaled a concussion.

While he didn’t return to the game for garbage time, he did pass the sideline concussion evaluation and seemed fine after the game. He’s not out-of-the-woods yet as delayed concussion symptoms are possible and generally require self-reporting. If we don’t hear anything in the next couple days, Raymond should be a full-go vs the Packers.

Lions Monday medical report after the Week 7 win over the Vikings

Lions Monday medical report after the Week 7 win over the Vikings with updates on Montgomery, LaPorta and more

After a brutal game last week vs the Cowboys, the Lions needed a much healthier game this week vs the Vikings and early indications are they got it. Here are the injuries I saw on the initial watch along with suspected diagnoses.

In Dan Campbell’s Monday press conference, he only commented on David Montgomery.

David Montgomery 1q 4:28, left knee contusion

On video, Montgomery’s left knee banged hard on the ground while defenders landed on the back of his knee. He was able to return quickly and finished out the game without any noticeable effect. Landing on his knee like this could cause a patella contusion, prepatellar bursitis, or more severely, a PCL sprain. A meniscus tear is a possibility also.

Dan Campbell on Monday stated “he’s good…. he got kneed in the back of the knee… it’s more like a contusion… nothing should come from this”.

There is a good chance that Montgomery has already had an MRI showing no PCL sprain, meniscus tear, or other abnormalities. A simple contusion is an excellent outcome and Montgomery should be full-go for next game.

Amon-Ra St. Brown 1q 00:10, right knee contusion

St. Brown came up grabbing at his right knee after a catch. Slow-mo video review showed that he didn’t get hurt on the tackle or the fall, but from banging knees with a Viking defender as he was getting up. He didn’t miss any snaps.

Good news that the knee was protectively fully flexed at time of impact making a MCL sprain less likely. Likely this is just a benign contusion and he should be fine for next game.

Josh Paschal 2q 12:38, right elbow

Video showed Paschal landing hard on his right elbow. He returned later in the drive and played the rest of the game with a small elbow pad. The injury may be a simple contusion to the elbow or an olecranon bursitis.

In the 3rd quarter at the 13 minute mark, he went down appearing to have an issue with his left arm. There was no good video here. He was able to return later in the drive and finish out the game.

At this point, I’m not expecting anything serious with Paschal, but the initial injury report on Wednesday will be something to watch.

Sam LaPorta 2q 2:00, right knee hyperextension

After making a catch, LaPorta’s right knee was very slightly hyperextended when he was hit while getting up. He didn’t miss a play. Hyperextensions can cause bone bruises and ligament sprains but the video looked pretty benign. I expect him to be fine vs the Titans.

Recall that last year in the final regular season game, LaPorta had a much more severe hyperextension of his left knee. He played the very next game in the playoffs with a knee brace.

Lions lose RB David Montgomery in disastrous first quarter in Minnesota

Lions lose RB David Montgomery to knee injury in disastrous first quarter in Minnesota

The Detroit Lions got off to a terrible start in the Week 7 matchup with the Vikings in Minnesota.

The Lions offense was rough on the first three drives, failing to pick up a single first down. Meanwhile, an easily-stopped fake punt on Detroit’s opening series set up Minnesota for an easy rushing touchdown. Minnesota tacked on a 57-yard field goal to quickly seize a 10-0 lead.

To add injury to insult, running back David Montgomery limped off the field with considerable assistance after being tackled on a 3rd-and-short, where he was snuffed under the pile. The team quickly ruled Montgomery’s return as questionable with a knee injury.

UPDATE: Montgomery returned to the game after sitting out a series.

Lions vs Vikings: Wednesday injury report medical analysis

Lions vs Vikings: Wednesday injury report medical analysis for both Detroit and Minnesota

DETROIT LIONS

Carlton Davis (NP) quad, CB

Davis left the game after getting a cleat to the head early in the 3rd quarter. Good to see no concussion or head on the report.

As far as his quad, there were no signs of any leg issue during his final drive. Guessing this is a precautionary issue and we will see him with an LP/FP on Thursday which would put him on track to play.

Brian Branch (LP) knee, S

The knee listing is a surprise but the LP suggests there is nothing serious going on. It’s possible he landed hard on his knee during his interception return early in the 4th quarter. He played the first two plays of the next drive without obvious issues, but then was replaced by Brandon Joseph the rest of garbage time. Branch looked to be in good spirits on the sideline.

Unless there is a surprise NP on Thursday, I’d expect him to play vs the Vikings.

Dan Skipper (NP) ribs, OT

Skipper hurt his right ribs in game three vs the Cardinals but didn’t miss a game. He was wearing a visible protective pad on that right side during the Cowboys game. Regardless, he felt good enough to “run” a WR route late in the 4th quarter. Expect him to be available vs the Vikings.

Frank Ragnow (NP) rest, C

Good to see that Ragnow’s pec is not on the report. He strained his left pec 3.5 weeks ago and the Cowboys game was his first game back. He was taken out late in the 4th quarter during garbage time but will be available vs the Vikings.

Kevin Zeitler (NP) rest, OG

Like Ragnow, Zeitler was removed from the game late in the 4th during garbage time. He will also be available on Sunday.

Christian Mahogany (FP) illness, OG

After a bout of mono starting in July, this 6th-round rookie started practicing again on Tuesday October 8. From a physical standpoint, the mono likely has not been an issue for over 1.5 months. Because he is so far behind from a mental standpoint, I expect him to max out the full 21-day practice window. Expect him to be put on the active roster around October 29.

NOTABLES

Aidan Hutchinson was placed on IR with a left tib/fib fracture. Expect him back in limited fashion for the Super Bowl.

Kyle Peko was placed on IR with left pec surgery. He is out for the year.

Kerby Joseph hurt his hamstring during practice last week. Good to see he is unlisted this week.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

Blake Cashman (NP) toe, LB

A turf toe issue will likely keep this important LB out this Sunday. He played 100% of snaps the past two games.

Aaron Jones (NP) hamstring, RB

A right hamstring (or iliotibial band issue based on where it was wrapped) will very likely keep Jones out. The Vikings traded for Cam Akers this week so we may see a lot of him.

Harrison Phillips (NP) shoulder, DT

This starting nose tackle would be a big loss in the middle.

TJ Hockenson (LP) knee, TE

Hockenson may not be ready to play this week coming off his ACL suffered against the Lions last year.

Akayleb Evans (NP) hip, CB

Evans is a special teamer who hasn’t played on defense in the past four games.

Patrick Jones (NP) shoulder, DE

Jones has five sacks on the year so his loss could be impactful.

Dalton Risner (LP) back, OG

Risner has yet to play this year due to injury.

Lions injury update: Carlton Davis, Brian Branch among the wounded

Lions injury update: Carlton Davis, Brian Branch among the wounded to start out Week 7

The first practice status injury report from the Detroit Lions ahead of the Week 7 showdown with the Minnesota Vikings features four players who did not participate on Wednesday.

The good news is that two of the players sat as part of a veteran rest regimen. Offensive linemen Frank Ragnow (C) and Kevin Zeitler (RG) each took the day for personal rest. Both played throughout the Week 6 win in Dallas until the Lions pulled the starters late in the blowout victory.

Cornerback Carlton Davis (quad) and offensive lineman Dan Skipper (ribs) also did not participate in practice. Davis is not in the concussion protocol after being kicked in the helmetless head during Sunday’s game.

Safety Brian Branch, the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week, was limited with a knee issue.

Finally, offensive lineman Christian Mahogany was a full participant as he continued to effort an activation from the non-football injury list.
