Where do Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell rank among most prolific lob duos?

As the Utah Jazz now resume basketball activities, there are major issues they need to fix regarding stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell.

As the Utah Jazz now resume basketball activities, there are major issues they need to fix regarding stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell.

After so much time off due to the coronavirus pandemic, there will be a lot to iron out for all rosters. But the recent gap also exposed some harsh truths about the two best players on the Jazz.

In a recent story, Tim MacMahon reported that Gobert feels he should receive more lobs from Mitchell (via ESPN):

“Gobert rarely hesitates to let teammates know if they miss him when he is open around the rim. He’ll occasionally point up during play in animated fashion, sometimes as he is running back on defense, to note that a lob should have been thrown …  Gobert knows his lobbying for lobs wears on teammates to the point of being counterproductive, like the wide receiver who gripes at the quarterback after every play when a pass isn’t thrown his way, regardless of the pass rush.”

Gobert led all NBA players with 306 dunks recorded last season, according to Basketball-Reference. But even when including alley-oops layups, the big man paired with Mitchell for only 28 lob connections during their 2018-19 campaign.

Considering that Gobert attempted 125 alley-oops in 2018-19 (17.6 percent of his total attempts from the field), this is certainly a major offensive focal point for the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

As such, McMahon continued, the two players have specifically worked on their “lob chemistry” in individualized practice sessions to further avoid the blunders like the one seen above during their game against Denver back in January:

“Utah coach Quin Snyder and his staff have attempted to help facilitate that trust, especially between Mitchell and Gobert. That duo have had dozens of two-man workouts under the watch of coaches, with a focus on ironing out intricacies of their pick-and-roll partnership and lob chemistry. They also occasionally join coaches – usually some combination of Snyder, Jensen and Johnnie Bryant, the assistant who works most with Mitchell – for small-group film sessions at the team’s facility.”

Gobert made 16 alley-oops following passes from Mitchell, per NBA.com. This accounted for 4.5 percent of his total field goal count, down from 5.9 percent last season. This would average out to approximately 0.36 connections per 36 minutes when looking at their total time spent (1607 minutes) on the court together, down from 0.48 last season.

For a better understanding of how that compares to other lob threats around the league, we looked at the top combinations on this play type. Brooklyn’s Spencer Dinwiddie assisted DeAndre Jordan on 46 alley-oop opportunities this season. This means they averaged 2.76 alley-oops per 36 minutes shared (599 minutes) on the floor.

While these two players are no longer on the same roster, Houston’s James Harden and former teammate Clint Capela were also successful on 46 of their alley-oop possessions. Capela, now on the Atlanta Hawks, was able to catch 1.53 alley-oops per 36 minutes that he played alongside Harden (1,082) in 2019-20.

Other prolific pairings in the NBA this season include Dinwiddie-to-Jarrett Allen (40), Trae Young-to-John Collins (36), LeBron James-to-Anthony Davis (34), Chris Paul-to-Nerlens Noel (33) and Elfrid Payton-to-Mitchell Robinson (33).

The data makes it clear that there is certainly room for more lob connections between the two players. However, considering how rare these opportunities are even for the most prolific duo, perhaps there are other aspects of offense to worry about in Utah.

Two former Warriors eliminated in first round of NBA 2K Tournament

Kevin Durant and Harrison Barnes have been officially eliminated in the NBA 2K tournament.

While the NBA season is still on hold, a form of hoops returned to national television on Friday. Although it wasn’t professional basketball, the players-only NBA 2K Tournament kicked off for the first round on ESPN.

The tournament started with a major upset as the top overall seed for the contest Kevin Durant went down in the first round against Derrick Jones Jr. of the Miami Heat.

Durant played with the Los Angeles Clippers as Jones used the Milwaukee Bucks. Jones and Bucks rolled the former Warriors’ forward in a 78-62 victory.

Another former Warrior was eliminated in the first round when Trae Young took to the sticks. Atlanta’s young All-Star cruised to a comfortable victory against Harrison Barnes. Young chose to play with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Bucks in his blowout 101-59 win against Barnes and the Toronto Raptors.

Along with Young and Jones, Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton and Clippers point guard Patrick Beverley punched tickets for the second round of the 2K tournament.

With two former members of the Warriors already eliminated, DeMarcus Cousins is the only remaining player in the tournament connected to Golden State. The former Los Angeles Lakers center will faceoff against Andre Drummond on Sunday.

Kevin Durant upset by Derrick Jones Jr. in first round of Players-Only 2K tournament

Kevin Durant entered the Players-Only 2K Tournament at the top seed, but the Brooklyn Nets forward was knocked out by Derrick Jones Jr.

Kevin Durant didn’t mess around when it came time to pick his first team for the Players-Only 2K tournament on ESPN on Friday. While Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. went with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks, the Brooklyn Nets superstar forward decided to take Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers.

But, Durant could not lead the Clippers to a win as Jones and the Bucks blew out Los Angeles 78-62.

Durant’s Clippers’ held a 17-14 lead after the first quarter, but Jones’ Bucks held a 35-31 lead by the half and built on that through the third to enter the final quarter with a sizeable 59-44 advantage, en route to the 16-point win.

Durant shot 52% from the floor with the Clippers (41% from long-range). The big difference was Jones made 12 3-point attempts (out of his 24 tries) while Durant made seven threes.

Durant is now eliminated from the tournament. Jones will play in the second round on ESPN 2 on Saturday.

2K TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: Kevin Durant vs. Derrick Jones Jr.

Kevin Durant is finally ready to represent Brooklyn — just not in the manner Nets fans may have initially expected.

For the first time since March 11, NBA players are back in action. Only, it’s not in the manner fans are used to seeing them. Unfortunately, the NBA is still on hiatus due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

So now, players have resorted to playing 2K20 in the first-ever Players-Only Tournament, which kicks off on Friday.

Kevin Durant is featured in the event. Here’s how everything lays out for the Brooklyn Nets forward and the start of the event:

WHERE YOU CAN WATCH: ESPN, ESPN 2.

DURANT’S TIP-OFF: 7:30 p.m.

LINE: Durant -3 (via BetOnline.ag)

DURANT’S ODDS TO WIN IT ALL: 4/1 (via BetOnline.ag)

RULES TO KNOW:  Per the NBPA, when it comes to picking teams, “Prior to the tournament beginning, every player will choose eight of today’s NBA teams, each of which can only be used once. If a mirror match is set, the away team is awarded first choice of team.” When it comes to the scheduling format, “Rounds one and two will be single elimination, with the semifinals and finals running best of three.”

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Not too long ago, Durant was having issues with 2K. If he hasn’t been able to adjust, his run in this tournament could be brief.

Hamidou Diallo tweets competing in Dunk Contest would’ve been ‘easy W’

The 2019 Dunk Contest champion did not participate due to his right elbow not being back at 100% after suffering an injury in November.

Hamidou Diallo didn’t participate in Saturday night’s controversial (more on that later) Dunk Contest. But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t watching.

The 2019 Dunk Contest champion had said at the end of January that he wanted to defend his title “if he was healthy”, and while that he was “100% a competitor” his primary focus was “trying to get into a groove on the court”.

Diallo missed significant time earlier this season dealing with a hyperextended right elbow injury that he suffered in a loss to the Lakers near the end of November.

Although he’s still been able to throw down some vicious dunks during the regular season, he didn’t feel his elbow was healthy enough to compete.

Apparently though, if he had been healthy enough, Diallo believes he would have been a back-to-back Dunk Contest winner, tweeting out midway through the competition, “This would’ve been an easy W.”

In fairness, that tweet was sent before the Dunk Contest got to the final round.

But even without Diallo’s tweet mid-competition, the 2020 Dunk Contest was full of controversy. Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. won the event over Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic in the second round of a dunk-off.

Although Jones Jr. threw down some seriously impressive dunks, including one where he hurdled someone, caught an alley-oop pass off the backboard, went between his legs and then dunked, many thought the crown should’ve have gone to Gordon.

Gordon not only hit a 360 alley-oop slam off the side of the backboard but he also dunked over 7’5” Celtics rookie, Tacko Fall.

According to ESPN, the final round of the dunk-off was supposed to end in a tie.

“We thought it was going to be tied. We were like, ‘This is a tie!'” one judge, hip-hop artist Common, told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne. “But somebody didn’t do it right. I don’t know who it is.”

Diallo won the 2019 Dunk Contest with a dunk where he hurdled Shaquille O’Neal, stuffing it with so much power he had his arm all the way through the hoop and was hanging by his elbow.

LeBron salutes Aaron Gordon and Derrick Jones Jr. for putting on a show during dunk contest

LeBron salutes Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon and Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. for putting on a show during the NBA dunk contest.

Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. narrowly edged Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon to secure a dunk contest title that required a pair of tiebreaker slams to decide it. Each of the high-flyers earned a 50 from the judges during the finals and in the first dunk-off, which led to the second tiebreaker round.

During the deciding round, Jones took off from just inside the free-throw line to throw down a windmill with his left hand that earned a 48 from the judges. In response, Gordon dunked over 7-foot-5 Boston Celtics rookie Tacko Fall while earning a 47. LeBron James spoke for many who watched the Saturday night festivities by suggesting that both Jones and Gordon should have earned a trophy.

“Two trophies should have been awarded tonight that’s for sure!!” LeBron tweeted. “Keep it a buck y’all. Them boys put on a show! Professional DUNKERS”

Regardless of who was ultimately crowned champion, the 2020 dunk contest was one of the best dunking competitions we’ve seen in years. It also did enough to properly pay homage to the 1988 dunk contest that Michael Jordan won the last time All-Star Weekend was in Chicago. Gordon earned five-straight 50’s during the contest at one point but clipping Fall’s head as he jumped over him during the final tiebreaker round appears to have cost him the title.

Jones Jr., meanwhile, consistently converted his first dunk attempt throughout the evening while finishing with authority and creativity on a regular basis. While Aaron was deserving of more than just a second place finish, Derrick certainly did enough to win.

Pat Connaughton Competes in Controversial Dunk Contest

The dunk contest during this year’s NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago will go down in infamy. A fantastic duel between the Miami Heat’s Derrick Jones Jr. and the Orlando Magic’s Aaron Gordon was ruined by questionable judging decisions in the final tiebreaking dunk-off. The debate as to who should have won this will live for years.

But before the panel of Dwyane Wade, Common, Candace Parker, Chadwick Bosman and Scottie Pippen made its biggest blunder of the night, it made one that served as a precursor to what eventually happened. Notre Dame legend Pat Connaughton, now with the Milwaukee Bucks, didn’t make it out of the first round even though a strong case could be made for it.

This first dunk, for which Connaughton was dressed in “White Men Can’t Jump” garb and Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich was involved, only netted him a 45, but tell me this shouldn’t have been a 50:

Connaughton’s second dunk involved teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo. He got a 50 this time, but it wasn’t enough to escape the undeserved low score of the first dunk.

Oh, and perhaps in the ultimate show of disrespect, DJ Khaled, who was tasked with introducing the participants, admitted to the whole world he couldn’t pronounce Connaughton’s last name, even though he should have had more than enough time to learn beforehand.

Oh well. Enter the contest again next year, Pat. Maybe things will go a lot better.

Aaron Gordon got absolutely robbed in the dunk contest… again

This ain’t right.

Listen, the 2020 dunk contest was absolutely amazing. It’s up there among the best ever. I’m talking Jordan and Wilkins in ’88 or LaVine and Gordon in ’16 good.

But, yet again, like in 2016, Aaron Gordon got absolutely ROBBED of a win.

It felt criminal to send either him or Derrick Jones, Jr. home without a trophy after all of the 50’s those dudes dropped. Not going to hold y’all, fam — I lost count after, like, the 4th one from Aaron Gordon.

[lawrence-related id=895377]

But somebody had to win, I guess? Man, all due respect to Derrick Jones, Jr., but they gave the trophy to the wrong guy tonight.

AARON GORDON DUNKED OVER TACKO FREAKING FALL. TACKO FALL, Y’ALL! LOOK!

This dunk SOMEHOW only amounted to a 47. A 47! Fam, they gave THIS from Dwight Howard a 49! What, did they drop him bonus points for being 56 years old or something? Come on?

Okay, okay. My bad, Dwight. Let me not take my anger out on him. It’s just that Gordon got robbed — AGAIN. Literally nobody can believe this happened.

Look at how Giannis Antetokounmpo felt after Gordon’s final score was announced. The crowd in the United Center booed relentlessly. Nobody can believe it!

Everyone is mad, yo. Nobody is happy with this result. They both should’ve gotten a trophy and we all know it.

Poor Aaron Gordon. He’s going to go down as the greatest dunker to never win a dunk contest.

This ain’t right. We know what happened here. The judges were just ready to go home. And, look, that’s just fine. Being out late sucks! But we have GOT to get things right. We didn’t tonight.

Aaron Gordon is the best dunker in the NBA and you can’t tell me otherwise.

NBA All-Star Weekend: Derrick Jones Jr. is returning to the Dunk Contest

Oh, we’re in for a treat.

This year’s dunk contest has a chance to be a really good one.

Obviously, we’re missing some pretty key names in the contest. We don’t have the exact names we want in there this year. It doesn’t look like Zion Williamson will participate and Ja Morant has already told us that he’s out of the running. But what we’ve got so far is pretty good.

Count Derrick Jones Jr. in as one of the participants, according to a report from The Athletic. He’ll join Dwight Howard as one of the two participants who have announced they’ll be participating in this year’s contest so far.

While Jones isn’t a big name as far as star power, he more than holds his own as a dunker.

He participated in the 2017 Dunk Contest that Glenn Robinson, III won. Yeah, Jones took an L. But looking back, I have no idea how he lost. Just take a look at these.

If his 2020 showing is anything like 2017, we’re in for a show.
