PFF names one free agent the Texans can’t afford to lose in 2025

The Houston Texans would be wise to keep defensive end Derek Barnett in the locker room for another season.

The Houston Texans need depth on their defensive line behind Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.

Two seasons into his tenure, defensive end Derek Barnett might be the top No. 3 pass rusher in the league. He once again proved to be a stable fill-in starter behind the dynamic duo off NRG Drive.

After re-signing as a restricted free agent last year, Barnett will become an unrestricted free agent in March. That means he’ll be free to negotiate with any team if the Texans elect to let him walk in favor of re-signing other options like wide receiver Stefon Diggs or defensive back Eric Murray.

Pro Football Focus doesn’t think the Texans should let Barnett reach free agency, calling him the one player they can’t afford to lose this offseason.

“Barnett has been a nice rotational option for the Texans when either Danielle Hunter or Will Anderson Jr. have needed a break,” the publication wrote. “He has earned an excellent 83.9 PFF overall grade since arriving in Houston in Week 13 of the 2023 season. Perhaps Barnett found his ideal role with the Texans, playing a productive 15 to 30 snaps per game instead of trying to carry a starter’s workload.”

Barnett has gone from being a name picked up off waivers to perhaps the best No. 3 defensive end entering 2025. Even in a rotational role, his five sacks were more than a dozen starters on different teams. Add in his run-blocking potential and it’s hard to envision a world where Barnett isn’t considered one of the more well-versed options in the market.

The Texans would be wise to reward him with at least a multi-year extension, keeping him in Houston through at least 2025. Should he walk, defensive end moves up the pecking order of needs since Dylan Horton would be the only remaining option under contract with significant reps.

Two former Vols competed Sunday in Week 18 of the 2024 NFL season. Their team’s results helped the Titans (3-14) secure the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Houston (10-7) defeated Tennessee (3-14), 32-27, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Former Vol defensive lineman Derek Barnett totaled four tackles, one tackle for a loss, one sack, two quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery touchdown for the Texans.

Derek Barnett of Texans rumbles to big man scoop and score

Derek Barnett with a big-man score on a fumble recovery for Houston

The Houston Texans were finishing their regular season against the Tennessee Titans.

The Titans were playing for a shot at the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft and not much else.

In the fourth quarter, 6-foot-3, 259-pound Derek Barnett picked up a fumble and barged his way 36 yards to the end zone.

The score and subesquent PAT made it 23-6 in Houston’s favor.

WATCH: Texans DE Derek Barnett records second thicc-six of 2024

The Houston Texans have as many thicc-six touchdowns from Derek Barnett as touchdowns to tight ends.

It’s not a bird.

It’s not a plane.

It’s a second “thicc-six” for Derek Barnett.

The Houston Texans are up by 17 after Barnett piled drove over a slew of Tennessee Titans defenders on his way to the end zone for a 36-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Titans quarterback Will Levis tried to hand off the ball to Josh Oliver, but the handoff was botched. Barnett caught the bounce and was off to the races.

Both of Barnett’s touchdowns this season came after fumbles he forced and recovered. The first happened in a 34-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.

It looks like his second score will come in a victory, too.

With a win, Houston would secure a second 10-victory season under DeMeco Ryans and C.J. Stroud.

Houston plays host to either the Pittsburgh Steelers or Los Angeles Chargers in the wild-card round next weekend.

Cowboys fumble twice on one play as Texans wind up with scoop-and-score

A crazy play saw the Cowboys fumble twice and the Texans’ Derek Barnett wind up with a TD

Just when you thought 2024 couldn’t get worse for the Dallas Cowboys, it did.

Cooper Rush fumbled the football in the fourth quarter on Monday against the Houston Texans.

Tyler Guyton picked it up only to cough up the football again.

This time Derek Barnett collected the loose ball and returned it 28 yards for the touchdown.

Eagles have 7th most amount of dead money salary cap hits in NFL for 2024

The Philadelphia Eagles $50 million in dead salary cap is the 7th most in the NFL

The Eagles have $27,451,062 in available cap space right now but could have a ton more if not for a $50 million dead salary cap hit that places Philadelphia among the top seven in the NFL, per Over The Cap.

The Eagles traded Haason Reddick this offseason and released Avonte Maddox before re-signing him at a lower salary. Other former Eagles included in the dead money are Marcus Mariota ($3,068,000), Kevin Byard ($1,386,000), Derek Barnett ($4,004,766), and Kyron Johnson ($104,964).

Additional money and salary cap space have been taken away after the retirements of Jason Kelce ($8,678,000) and Fletcher Cox ($4,200,000).

Contract terms for Texans DE Derek Barnett released

Derek Barnett is headed back to the Houston Texans on a one-year deal worth up to $3 million.

The Houston Texans have their No. 3 pass-rusher back for another season in Derek Barnett, and now fans know exactly what the contract entails.

According to KPRC2 Sports Aaron Wilson, Barnett agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth $2 million, including a $300,000 signing bonus. Barnett will earn an annual salary of 1.5 million, $700,000 of which is fully guaranteed.

Barnett, 27, transformed into a staple of Houston’s front seven after being claimed off waivers in late November. In six games, the former first-round defensive end totaled 19 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 11 quarterback hits.

Barnett, best served as a rotational defensive lineman, also started four games in place of Jonathan Greenard and Defensive Rookie of the Year Will Anderson Jr., who each suffered injuries that required them to miss two games. His greatest moment of the 2023 season came in the AFC Wild Card Round win over the Cleveland Browns.

He recorded a sack, along with four tackles to help Houston pick up its first postseason victory since 2019.

Hunter, who signed a two-year deal worth up to $51 million to play for the hometown team, was one of three defensive linemen added this offseason, joining former Jaguars starter Foley Fatukasi and Titans standout Denico Autry. Both
Since being drafted out of Tennessee in 2017, Barnett has totaled 169 career tackles, 24 sacks, 45 tackles for loss, and 87 quarterback hits.

2024 NFL free agency: Texans re-sign DE Derek Barnett to 1-year deal

The Houston Texans brought back one of their unheralded stars from the end of the 2023 season in defensive end Derek Barnett.

One of the breakout stars of the Houston Texans in 2023 will return this season.

Defensive end Derek Barnett re-signed with the Texans on a one-year deal, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson. Terms of the deal were not immediately reported.

Barnett joined the Texans late in the season after the Philadelphia Eagles waived him. He played six games for Houston where he recorded 2.5 sacks and 19 combined tackles. Barnett also had a 20.9% pass-rush win rate from Week 14 through the end of the regular season as well as seven tackles for a loss and three run stops over that time.

Where Barnett thrived, though, was in the postseason. He sacked Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco in the wild card round and forced what ended up being a pick-six in the second half.

The decision to bring Barnett back makes sense because of his experience and usability on the defense. He’ll be 27 in June and a great mentor and veteran for Will Anderson on the defensive line alongside Danielle Hunter and Denico Autry. Barnett’s time in Philadelphia is a huge boon for Houston, too, because of his ample postseason experience.

1 pending free agent Chargers should target: AFC South Edition

Listing one free agent from the Texans, Titans, Colts and Jaguars who could be a fit for the Chargers.

The Chargers won’t be aggressive when it comes to signing free agents.

General manager Joe Hortiz will make some moves to have some spendings available to them so they can sign some.

That said, I will list one pending free agent from each NFL team who could be a realistic target for L.A.

Next up is the AFC South.
