Report: Four teams called Jets about Denzel Mims, weren’t willing to meet Jets asking price

A couple teams tried making a move for Mims, but wouldn’t meet what the Jets were asking for.

The New York Jets had been fielding trade inquiries on WR Denzel Mims and it wasn’t just the Carolina Panthers who came calling.

According to Connor Hughes of SNY, along with the Panthers, the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks all called the Jets about trading for Mims. But none of them were willing to meet the Jets’ asking price of a fourth-round pick, so the Jets kept Mims.

And in the last few days, the Vikings and Panthers have acquired new wide receivers via trade. The Vikings traded for Jalen Raegor from the Philadelphia Eagles while the Panthers landed Laviska Shenault from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

For now, it looks like the Jets are going to keep Mims this season, despite his trade request and his public frustrations about his role in the offense. Mims even said earlier Wednesday that he believes the coaches have already made up their minds regarding his place on the team as a backup, but said he’ll still try to change their minds.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas told the media that he doesn’t think Mims wants to play somewhere else, he just wants to play more. We’ll see if that message gets through to the coaching staff and how the coaches continue to utilize Mims. But at the very least, the phones have been ringing and business may still be open.

Denzel Mims believes coaches have made up their mind on him as a backup

Mims is still frustrated but still willing to prove himself to the Jets

WR Denzel Mims spoke to the media Wednesday and continued expressing his frustration over not getting a full opportunity in the offense.

Mims believes he should be a starter in the offense and believes he has shown that since OTAs. But in his mind, the coaching staff has already decided on their guys and he isn’t one of them.

Mims did say he will continue to try and change their minds but also acknowledged that he expects to be inactive for Week 1 against the Ravens.

Both sides seem to want to reach some sort of resolution to try and smooth things over. Mims just wants to continue to prove himself and just wants that opportunity that he has been asking for for a long time now.

Robert Saleh on Mims situation: ‘I have a lot of respect for Denzel. I don’t think he’s a hostage’

The Jets/Denzel Mims situations gets more awkward by the day.

The tension between the New York Jets and WR Denzel Mims is getting thicker and thicker. Mims wants out, the Jets seem to be doing their best to make him happy.

After Sunday’s game against the Giants, head coach Robert Saleh referred to Mims as “one of our six best receivers”. The Jets kept six wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster and Mims was indeed one of the six. But that doesn’t mean everything is peachy in Florham Park.

When asked if Mims feels like a hostage right now, Saleh said “I don’t view him as a hostage.”

To add to that, Saleh was asked about the situation and mentioned that Saleh has used a quote from Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin in the past that “we want volunteers, not hostages” and was asked if he disagrees with the notion that it feels like Mims is a hostage right now.

Saleh said the following:

Depends, that’s a really good question and a good observation there. As it pertains to Denzel, I have a lot of respect for Denzel and it’s different when they don’t want to be here because they hate it here, like fine, take a hike. I’m more than happy to open up the door. Denzel’s a tremendously respectful young man and I think he genuinely loves his teammates, he loves the Jets organization. Is he frustrated? Is he frustrated with all of us? Sure, I’m sure he is. He wants to play and for that, I don’t think he’s a hostage. It’s a lot easier to kick somebody out of the door if they want a trade if they’re jerks and that’s not Denzel, he’s a good young man and I love the way he approaches everything, even with this, the way he’s come about it, very professional, comes to meetings, practice, does all of it, so I guess I just don’t view him as a hostage.

We’ll see what happens. The Jets clearly want to keep him this season. They’ll do their best to give him the opportunity he’s been asking for. He did score a touchdown in the final preseason game, so maybe that will build some momentum.

Studs and Duds from final preseason game vs. Giants

Studs and duds from Sunday’s preseason finale

The Jets scored a 31-27 victory over the New York Giants to score an undefeated 2022 preseason at 3-0. Some players shined in the final tune-up for the regular season, which begins in two weeks against the Baltimore Ravens. Let’s take a look at some of those players, and a couple that didn’t shine as bright as others.

NFL fans had lots of theories about where Jets WR Denzel Mims will be traded to before start of season

Mims could have plenty to offer a team that needs receivers.

There’s no denying that Jets’ receiver Denzel Mims has a lot of talent. Though, as one of New York’s second-round picks in 2020, the former Baylor standout has failed to live up to the hype thus far in his career. Through two years, the wideout has just 31 catches for 490 yards and zero touchdowns.

With New York seemingly moving onto other weapons for Zach Wilson, Mims is understandably frustrated, recently formally requesting a trade. And after a standout performance (seven catches, 102 yards, one touchdown) against the Giants (+3.5) in the Jets’ preseason finale, Mims seemingly doubled down on his desire to leave New York:

In the post-game, when asked about Mims, Jets head coach Robert Saleh said he’s one of the best receivers on New York’s roster. Oh, an endorsement!

But Saleh also said that Mims would be “here” [New York] unless he’s traded. Uh, not exactly a ringing endorsement for Mims’ future in green and white!

When asked to clarify his trade plea after what might have been his final game in a Jets uniform, Mims was understandably tight-lipped — deferring to conversations between himself and his agent:

We don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes in Jets land. But these are not pictures of a relationship that seems like it’s in a quality place at the moment. If Mims does indeed stay in New York, you have to wonder for how long and whether a trade for the WR materializes with just about two weeks to go before the regular season.

Denzel Mims on relationship with coaches: ‘It is what it is. It’s my coaches.’

Denzel Mims had some interesting words after Sunday’s game

Denzel Mims put out a strong performance in the Jets’ final preseason game against the New York Giants. He caught seven passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in his first game since publicly requesting a trade from the franchise on Thursday.

He spoke to the media after the game and had some interesting words to say regarding his trade request and his relationship with the coaches.

“That was something between me and my agent,” Mims said. “My agent (Ron Slavin) can tell you more about that. It was something that we made.”

Mims added that he “loves the Jets” and “I don’t have a problem with the Jets.” But when asked about his relationship with the coaches, he said “It is what it is. It’s my coaches. I have nothing but respect for them.”

He said he respects head coach Robert Saleh, but paused for a moment before talking about him. Saleh called him “one of our six best receivers” after Sunday’s game.

The Jets have until Tuesday to cut their roster down to 53 players. By then, we’ll have a better idea of where things stand between them and Mims.

Robert Saleh says Denzel Mims was ‘gritty’ and ‘one of our six best wide receivers’

Could Denzel Mims make the final roster?

Could there be a resolution to the Denzel Mims/Jets saga? Sunday’s performance over the Jets plus head coach Robert Saleh’s post-game comments seems to think there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Mims caught seven passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in the Jets’ 31-27 win over the Giants to finish the preseason 3-0. This was Mims’ first game since publicly requesting a trade on Thursday, as he grew frustrated with his role and lack of opportunities.

On Sunday, he played into the fourth quarter, but he was also, by far, the most-targeted receiver on Sunday. He saw eight targets. No other Jet saw more than four.

After the game, Saleh called Mims “gritty” and “one of our six best wide receivers”. That could be a sign that the Jets will keep Mims when they cut their roster down to 53 players, as they very well could keep six receivers. The top four of Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Garrett Wilson and Braxton Berrios are locks. If the Jets keep six receivers, you have to think Mims has a good shot of sticking around now. Teams must be at 53 by 4:00 eastern on Tuesday.

Watch: Denzel Mims scores first NFL touchdown

First NFL touchdown for Denzel Mims

It took three seasons. But WR Denzel Mims finally knows what it’s like to score a touchdown in the NFL.

After two seasons without finding the end zone, Mims caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from QB Chris Streveler to tie the game at 24 against the New York Giants in his first game since requesting a trade from the Jets. Will this be enough to keep Mims on the Jets and give him a shot in the offense? We’ll find out this week. But for now, enjoy Mims’ first NFL score.

Should the Vikings trade for Denzel Mims?

The former second-round pick requested a trade from the Jets. Would the Vikings want to add him to the wide receiver room?

The Minnesota Vikings have a history of trading with the New York Jets. Just last season, they traded a fourth-round pick for tight end Chris Herndon and a sixth-round pick.

There has been a lot of speculation with wide receiver Denzel Mims since the start of head coach Robert Saleh’s tenure with the Jets. Mims was curiously low on the depth chart and still hasn’t played much thus far with only 20 games played in his career.

Mims’ agent Ron Slavin released a statement on behalf of Mims requesting a trade.

It is worth noting that according to the statement, the Jets have told them multiple times. The question remains: who would trade for the former Baylor Bear?

The Carolina Panthers, who made the trade for quarterback Sam Darnold last offseason, have been known to target players who played for head coach Matt Rhule at Temple and Baylor. They kept up with that trend and have contacted the Jets about acquiring the wide receiver.

The question remains: should the Minnesota Vikings trade for Mims?

They had three opportunities to select Mims, but chose to take Justin Jefferson, Jeff Gladney and Ezra Cleveland at those spots in the 2020 draft. While they separated massively once they got to the NFL, they were the consensus fourth and fifth wide receivers in the 2020 draft class. The skillset is there with Mims, he just hasn’t put it together.

Mims is a big-bodied player (6’3/207) who ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash and a 38.5″ vertical jump. He knows how to get the ball at the catch point and win over the top.

His biggest issues are drops (over 11% drop rate at Baylor) and his unwillingness to be physical in contested catch situations.

Is Mims worth a flier? I believe so. The toolset is there and I once believed that he could be a Julio Jones-style receiver. The price would likely be a fifth or sixth-round pick in a swap for another day three pick. He would fit in well as a fourth-fifth option giving the room a big body for red zone and short yardage situations.

The Vikings would be smart to at the very least inquire about Mims but will they want to make a move for him?

Report: Panthers have interest in Jets WR Denzel Mims

Could Denzel Mims reunite with Matt Rhule?

Jets WR Denzel Mims wants out of New York. And perhaps he has a potential suitor in place.

The Athletic’s Zach Rosenblatt and Joe Person are both reporting that the Carolina Panthers have shown interest and have called the Jets about Mims.

The connection makes sense. Mims had a pair of 1,000-yard seasons while at Baylor, His head coach during that time? Current Panthers head coach Matt Rhule.

And of course, as Person notes, there is obviously already some history of trading between Jets general manager Joe Douglas and Panthers GM Scott Fitterer, namely the Sam Darnold trade.

The Panthers certainly could create a role for Mims on their offense. There isn’t much in the wide receiver room outside of DJ Moore and former Jet Robbie Anderson. Of course, Christian McCaffrey is still around, but you have to think the Panthers will want to sling the ball a little bit too with Baker Mayfield at quarterback.

The Panthers likely would only have to ship a late-round pick to get Mims. The Jets are willing to listen to trade offers, but aren’t going to just give him away, as reported by Connor Hughes of SNY. This will certainly be a story worth monitoring going forward. The deadline to get down to 53 players in Tuesday, so we’ll see if something happens this weekend.
