Texans add former Ohio State TE Nick Vannett, release DE Demone Harris

The Houston Texans have signed former Ohio State tight end Nick Vannett and released defensive end Demone Harris.

The Houston Texans have added a veteran tight end to the roster after all.

As the club works through second-year Teagan Quitoriano coming off the physically unable to perform list and third-year Brevin Jordan battling a hamstring injury, the Texans signed Nick Vannett Wednesday.

Vannett, 30, is on his sixth NFL team after the Seattle Seahawks drafted him in Round 3 in 2016. The former Ohio State product stayed with the NFC West club three games into the 2019 season before playing the last 13 with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 2020, Vannett played for the Denver Broncos before spending the next two seasons with the New Orleans Saints through three games. The rest of Vannett’s 2022 season was spent with the New York Giants where he played six games.

The Texans also released defensive end Demone Harris, who had played four games for Houston since 2021.

Report: Texans sign DE Demone Harris to reserve/future contract

The Houston Texans have signed defensive end Demone Harris to a reserve/future contract.

The Houston Texans like what they saw from Demone Harris through three games in 2022 and want to keep working with him, even as the club decides on a new coaching staff.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans agreed to terms with Harris and made it official that he signed a reserve/future contract. Houston previously made their reserve/future contracts known on Tuesday.

Harris logged four combined tackles, a quarterback hit, and a pass breakup through 62 defensive snaps in 2022.

The Texans signed Harris to their practice squad on Nov. 10, 2021. Houston signed Harris to a reserve/future contract at the end of that season after he played and started in a game for them in Week 16 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Houston Texans were able to get their second sack against the Los Angeles Rams with DE Demone Harris dropping QB John Wolford.

The Houston Texans defense is getting after the Los Angeles Rams’ passer.

Defensive end Demone Harris came up with a big stop on third-and-11 from the Texans’ 24-yard line with 5:30 to go in the first quarter when he sacked quarterback John Wolford for a 1-yard loss. The Rams were forced to settle for a 43-yard Matt Gay field goal.

Harris played three games in 2021, two with the Kansas City Chiefs and one with the Texans.

The Texans’ pass rush is predicated upon waves of pressure from rotating defensive linemen. If the Texans are able to get pressure from Harris consistently, it will help coach Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 function at a high level.

Texans sign 11 players to reserve/future contracts

The Houston Texans signed 11 players to reserve/future contracts to close out the 2021 season.

The Houston Texans have signed 11 players to reserve/future contracts as they finish up with the 2021 season.

The Texans reached agreements with linebacker Josh Watson, defensive end Michael Dwumfour, running back Darius Anderson, receiver Jalen Camp, offensive lineman Jake Eldrenkamp, defensive back T.J. Green, defensive lineman Demone Harris, receiver Damon Hazelton, fullback Paul Quessenberry, linebacker Connor Strachan, and offensive lineman Jordan Steckler.

Dwumfour saw action in the final three games, starting in one, as he collected five tackles, a half-sack, two tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits.

The Texans also made a move to sign offensive lineman Sam Cooper as a free agent.

Houston released defensive back Cre’von LeBlanc from the practice squad.

Texans add DE Demone Harris to practice squad, cut OL Carson Green

The Houston Texans have signed defensive end Demone Harris to the practice squad, and released offensive tackle Carson Green to make room.

The Houston Texans have added a veteran defensive lineman to their practice squad.

Although the Texans are on their bye week for Week 10, the club is still evaluating their roster and has signed defensive end Demone Harris, who was previously with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2019-21. The Chiefs released Harris from their practice squad on Oct. 25.

Harris provided the Chiefs with seven combined tackles, two tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits through seven career games.

Kansas City made Harris one of their standard elevations from the practice squad in Weeks 5-6, and he didn’t get in the stat sheet despite seeing 17 defensive snaps total.

Harris was an undrafted free agent who caught on with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, going between their practice squad and the active roster throughout 2018. In 2019, he was released in October and spent the next month on the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad.

To make room for Harris, the Texans released tackle Carson Green, an undrafted free agent from Texas A&M.

Chiefs release DE Demone Harris from practice squad

The #Chiefs have released DE Demone Harris from the practice squad ahead of Week 8.

The Kansas City Chiefs have cleared a spot on their practice squad ahead of Week 8.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice on Monday, the practice squad contract of DE Demone Harris has been terminated by the Chiefs. Harris first joined Kansas City as a late-season addition in 2019 when he was signed to the team from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. He spent the remainder of that season on the 53-man roster through Super Bowl LIV. He signed a reserve/future deal with the team and joined the Chiefs’ practice squad for the majority of the 2020 NFL season.

The team protected Harris on the practice squad as recently as last week. He has been protected a total of four times since Week 2. The 25-year-old appeared in two games for Kansas City in 2021, with standard elevations from the practice squad in Weeks 5 and 6, playing 17 total snaps on defense. He recorded no official statistics in those 17 snaps with the team.

After his two standard elevations, Harris would now be subject to waivers were the Chiefs to elevate him to the 53-man roster again. Last week, the team signed former Las Vegas Raiders draft pick Shilique Calhoun to the practice squad, presumably because they knew they’d need another option to elevate on the defensive line with Austin Edwards and Cortez Broughton being the only other defensive linemen on the practice squad. Should injuries or COVID-19 strike, there’s always a possibility that Harris is back with the team either on the practice squad or 53-man roster in the future.

Chiefs protect 4 practice squad players for Week 7

The #Chiefs protected four practice squad players on Tuesday, using their four allotted protections for the first time in a single week this season.

The Kansas City Chiefs have protected four players on the practice squad ahead of their Week 7 game against the Tennessee Titans.

QB Shane Buechele, DE Demone Harris, LB Darius Harris and LB Christian Rozeboom were all protected by Kansas City on Tuesday per the NFL’s official personnel notice. Buechele and Demone Harris are going on three consecutive weeks of practice squad protections for Kansas City. Darius Harris and Rozeboom are both being protected for the first time this season.

This marks the most players protected by the Chiefs in a single week in 2021. Teams are allowed to protect as many as four players on the practice squad each week. Players who are not protected can leave the team to sign to another team’s active roster. Those who are protected for the week are not permitted to sign with other teams.

The decisions to protect the two linebackers suggest that the Chiefs could be without starter Anthony Hitchens for some time. Hitchens suffered an elbow injury during the Week 6 win in Washington. As of Monday, the Chiefs were still awaiting MRI results from his injury.

Hitchens wears the green dot for the Chiefs’ defense and is one of the team’s most indispensable defensive players because of that. Darius Harris has filled in at the middle linebacker position last season, so he’d be a logical player signed to the 53-man roster if Hitchens was to be placed on injured reserve with his elbow injury.

Chiefs announce lone roster move on Saturday

The #Chiefs are bringing DE Demone Harris up from the practice squad in their lone roster move prior to Week 6.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a lone roster move on Saturday ahead of their Week 6 clash with the Washington Football Team.

With Chris Jones ruled out, missing his second consecutive week with a wrist injury, the Chiefs have once again elevated DE Demone Harris from the practice squad. He was protected earlier in the practice week, indicating that he’d likely be elevated again.

This is the third year that Harris has spent in Kansas City. He got his start on the 53-man roster in 2019, after being signed away from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. He appeared in a handful of games leading up to Super Bowl LIV and he’s since spent a few seasons on the practice squad as one of the team’s trusted reserves along the defensive line.

Harris was active for the first time this season last week, appearing in just 10 snaps in Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills. He didn’t record any stats during the game, but this week he could see some more opportunities to mix in with the starters in Kansas City.

Andy Reid expressed optimism that Chris Jones could make his return in Week 7, so this could be the last opportunity for a while for Harris to make an impression on the active roster.

Chiefs protect 3 practice squad players for Week 6

The #Chiefs protected a trio of players on the practice squad on Wednesday, the most they’ve protected in a single week this season.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwa53mtds520q2 player_id=none image=https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Kansas City Chiefs have protected a trio of players on the practice squad ahead of their Week 6 game against the Washington Football Team.

QB Shane Buechele, DE Demone Harris and CB Dicaprio Bootle were all protected by the Chiefs on Wednesday per the NFL’s official personnel notice. Two players who were protected this week, Buechele and Harris, were also protected ahead of Week 5. Bootle was also among the players protected back in Week 4.

This is the most players protected by Kansas City in a single week so far this season. Teams are allowed to protect as many as four players on the practice squad each week. Players who are not protected can leave the team to sign to another team’s active roster. Those who are protected are not permitted to sign with other teams.

Harris was active last week for the Chiefs with Chris Jones sitting during the Week 5 tilt with the Buffalo Bills. He played just 10 defensive snaps and recorded no stats on the day. Jones was still out of practice with his wrist injury on Wednesday, so that’s not a good sign about his availability this week. Andy Reid did say Jones was making progress in his recovery from injury.

With Charvarius Ward also sitting out of practice with an injury on Wednesday, it makes sense that the Chiefs would protect Dicaprio Bootle. He was active and played most only special teams back in Week 4.

This is the second week in a row that Buechele has been protected on the practice squad. It would appear the front office in Kansas City has some concerns about teams with injuries at the QB position poaching Buechele from the practice squad.
