Oklahoma is reportedly bringing back one of its own.

The Sooners lost running backs coach Jay Boulware to Texas just over a week ago. Nine days later, Oklahoma is bringing back former Sooners’ star and current Arizona running backs coach DeMarco Murray to coach running backs, according to Jason Scheer of 247Sports’ Arizona affiliate.

“Sources have indicated to Wildcat Authority that the move has been completed and could be announced as soon as Monday,” Scheer reports. “… Sources indicate that Oklahoma quickly contacted Murray when an opening emerged and he has always been the clear top target.”

Scheer reports that the official announcement could be announced as soon as Monday.

Murray was hired as Arizona’s running back coach prior to the 2019 offseason. He would have spent one season coaching under former Oklahoma assistant, whom Murray played for in 2007 at OU, Kevin Sumlin.

Murray played at Oklahoma under current inside wide receivers coach Cale Gundy from 2007-10. A Las Vegas, Nevada, native, Murray was a major piece to the Sooners’ 2008 team that went to the national championship game and the 2010 team that won the Big 12 Championship and Fiesta Bowl. He accounted for 5,256 yards from scrimmage in his Oklahoma career and 63 touchdowns.

Murray would go on to be drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. In 2014, he was named the NFL AP Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 1,845 yards and 13 touchdowns. Murray finished his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans in 2017.

Oklahoma has yet to make an announcement on the hire as of Sunday evening.

The first real name to fill the void left by former running backs and special teams coach Jay Boulware has emerged.

Former star Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray dipped into the coaching ranks prior to the 2019 football season for Kevin Sumlin at Arizona. According to a report from Michael Lev of the Arizona Daily Star and Tuscon.com, the Sooners have “at the very least has reached out to Arizona in regard to Murray”.

According to Lev, Murray was out on the road recruiting with the rest of the Arizona football staff and that it was unclear if contact from Oklahoma was anything more than exploratory, but Arizona is “preparing for that possibility” of losing him.

Murray played at Oklahoma under current inside wide receivers coach Cale Gundy from 2007-10. Boulware was making $470,000 a year as Oklahoma’s running back and special teams coach in 2019. Murray was making $235,000 as Arizona’s running back coach in 2019.

He is the first true name to have any traction to Oklahoma’s running back coach opening.

Titans players and fans react to 35-24 AFC Championship loss to Chiefs

Players and fans took to social media after the loss.

The 2019 season was a long and winding road for the Tennessee Titans.

After a 2-4 start, the team totally turned things around, benching former starting quarterback Marcus Mariota in favor of Ryan Tannehill, who ignited the offense in a way almost no one thought to be possible.

But the team’s Cinderella Story of a season met its end on Sunday in Arrowhead Stadium as the Titans fell 35-24 to a Kansas City Chiefs team they had defeated 35-32 back in November.

Adrian Peterson, Demarco Murray named top-10 running backs of the decade

Adrian Peterson and Demarco Murray come in at No. 1 and 5 respectively in the Yahoo Sports All-Decade running backs list.

When it comes to running backs, the Sooners have had their fare share of all-timers. According to Yahoo Sports, Adrian Peterson and Demarco Murray come in at No. 1 and No. 5 respectively on the top-10 running backs of the decade list.

Adrian Peterson had both a storied career at the college and professional level. From 2004-06, he amassed 4,239 yards for Oklahoma. He averaged 5.4 yards per carry, and scored 41 rushing touchdowns.

At the professional level, Peterson was the only running back to win MVP this decade. He ran for 2,097 yards for the Vikings in 2012, just 8 yards away from the record for most rushing yards in a season. Since his tenure with the Vikings, he has played for the Saints, Cardinals, and now the Redskins. He ranks fifth all-time in rushing yards with 14,216 yards. The only other active back in the top 20 is Frank Gore at No. 3.

Demarco Murray immediately followed Peterson at Oklahoma, and had two 1,000-yard seasons for the Sooners. He played for four years, and scored 50 rushing touchdowns. He ran for 7,174 yards in the decade in the NFL for the Cowboys and the Titans, good for sixth-most. Murray retired from football in 2017.
