Oklahoma is reportedly bringing back one of its own.
The Sooners lost running backs coach Jay Boulware to Texas just over a week ago. Nine days later, Oklahoma is bringing back former Sooners’ star and current Arizona running backs coach DeMarco Murray to coach running backs, according to Jason Scheer of 247Sports’ Arizona affiliate.
“Sources have indicated to Wildcat Authority that the move has been completed and could be announced as soon as Monday,” Scheer reports. “… Sources indicate that Oklahoma quickly contacted Murray when an opening emerged and he has always been the clear top target.”
Scheer reports that the official announcement could be announced as soon as Monday.
Murray was hired as Arizona’s running back coach prior to the 2019 offseason. He would have spent one season coaching under former Oklahoma assistant, whom Murray played for in 2007 at OU, Kevin Sumlin.
Murray played at Oklahoma under current inside wide receivers coach Cale Gundy from 2007-10. A Las Vegas, Nevada, native, Murray was a major piece to the Sooners’ 2008 team that went to the national championship game and the 2010 team that won the Big 12 Championship and Fiesta Bowl. He accounted for 5,256 yards from scrimmage in his Oklahoma career and 63 touchdowns.
Murray would go on to be drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. In 2014, he was named the NFL AP Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 1,845 yards and 13 touchdowns. Murray finished his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans in 2017.
Oklahoma has yet to make an announcement on the hire as of Sunday evening.
