NFL to allow teams to carry third QB on game days

The 49ers had a booboo, so the NFL is changing the rules.

According to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, going forward the league will now allow teams to carry a third quarterback on their active game day rosters without actually counting for a roster spot.

This is good news for undrafted Seahawks rookie QB Holton Ahlers, as well as all the other projected QB3s around the NFL.

In the unlikely event that both starter Geno Smith and backup Drew Lock get injured during a game, Seattle can roll out another actual QB rather than us having to suffer through another pass from DeeJay Dallas.

A look at Seahawks injury updates heading into Wild Card Weekend

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll provided a number of player injury updates heading into the preparation for the Wild Card Weekend.

The Seattle Seahawks are headed to the wild-card round of the playoffs with a couple of players dinged up after the toll of the regular season. Coach Pete Carroll was able to provide a number of injury updates during his afternoon press conference on Monday.

Safety Ryan Neal, who was inactive for the third week in a row battling a knee injury, appears to be on the mend.

“He’s making progress,” Carroll told reporters. “It’s going to be a race to see what happens. But he was pretty positive. He’s a pretty upbeat, positive guy. Gotta take that in. I was really happy for him because he felt like there was a hope he could make it back.”

Carroll also said guard Phil Haynes (ankle) has a chance to return this week as well.

As for the players who sustained some damage during the Seahawks win over the Rams, Carroll had the following to say.

“It seems like they’re kind of bumped, bumps and bruises kind of thing,” Carroll explained.  “And so there’s hope they can make it through, but we’ve got to wait and see. Tariq (Woolen) had a couple of things he was banged on. And we saw Shelby (Harris) got hit on the thigh or something like that. And so did DeeJay (Dallas). Just got to wait and see. I can’t tell you.”

Darrell Taylor posts highest PFF grade for Seahawks in Week 17

He went off for 2.5 sacks against the Jets and posted the highest Pro Football Focus grade on the team this week.

The Seahawks beat the Jets yesterday, 23-6. While they’re hardly a Super Bowl contender, any win right now is a welcome development. Seattle also got positive signs of growth from a few key young players, especially outside linebacker Darrell Taylor. He went off for 2.5 sacks against the Jets and posted the highest Pro Football Focus grade on the team this week.

Here are the full individual PFF grades for every player on offense and defense from Week 17.

Seahawks running backs on the mend ahead of Week 16 vs. Chiefs

The Seattle Seahawks running backs have been able to benefit from the extra time to rest and recuperate heading into the Week 16 matchup.

The Seattle Seahawks enjoyed a bit of a mini-bye over the weekend and it couldn’t have come at a better time for those players who are battling injuries like the running backs. Kenneth Walker III and DeeJay Dallas – both fighting ankle injuries – should definitely benefit from the rest and recuperation.

“The extra days are going to really help him,” coach Pete Carroll said Friday of Walker. “This is an issue he’s dealing with that rest helps, so these three days here, a fourth day on Monday, will really give him a chance to bounce back, so I don’t expect any problems with that.”

While Walker was able to play against the 49ers on Thursday night, Dallas was inactive and ruled out of the action.

“He’s coming back, he’s got a great attitude about it, but he’s got a legitimate high ankle sprain, so he has to make a turn here,” Carroll explained. “He’s got really a good break, and by Wednesday or so next week we’ll have a good feel for where he is. But it’s still going to be a race against it, because it’s a legitimate high ankle.”

Carroll should have updated information on Tuesday when he speaks to the media.

Seahawks vs. 49ers: Ken Walker returns, Al Woods among 6 inactives

Unfortunately, defensive tackle Al Woods is out.

The Seattle Seahawks are back in action on a short week to take on the San Francisco 49ers. Seattle has a tough hill to climb, but they will be getting a much-needed boost. Rookie running back Kenneth Walker III is back in the lineup after missing Sunday against the Panthers.

The Seahawks have been unable to move the ball on the ground and are in dire need of Walker’s explosiveness, now more than ever, especially with DeeJay Dallas and Tony Jones Jr. out.

Meanwhile, defensive end Shelby Harris will return to the field. Harris missed the game on Sunday due to an illness. Unfortunately, defensive tackle Al Woods is out, which will be a considerable loss for an ailing run defense against the 49ers.

Seahawks a bit banged up heading into short week vs. 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks are dealing with a number of injuries heading into the Week 15 Thursday Night Football contest against the 49ers.

The Seattle Seahawks’ egos are likely still bruised from Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers but the team has an even bigger foe coming to town on a short week – the San Francisco 49ers. Unfortunately for Seattle, a number of players are also battling injuries, some of which could keep them out of Thursday’s action as well.

The defensive line suffered a big loss first when defensive end Shelby Harris was declared inactive for the contest due to illness. Next, nose tackle Al Woods hurt his heel in the second quarter and was unable to return.

“You saw that Shelby just came in sick as a dog this morning,” coach Pete Carroll said after the loss. “He just couldn’t answer. He got IV’d, and they did everything they could for him. They couldn’t turn him around. Shelby is a big part of our play up front, and Al going out in the second quarter, those are two heavy dudes up front that we’re relying on. We had moved Al to get some extra play out of him at the end spot. Overall in general I think they had 60 yards at halftime or something like that.

“Things were somewhat in control, but Al couldn’t come back for the second half, and not having Shel, that made a difference.”

As for the offensive side of the ball, Seattle’s run game really struggled with running backs Kenneth Walker III and DeeJay Dallas both inactive with ankle injuries.

“As it turned out, neither one of them could make it, they couldn’t,” Carroll said. “DeeJay, high ankle sprain is hard to turn it around. He was really hopeful and optimistic and all of that and trying to bounce around during the week, but when it got down to it, often high ankles feel okay until you really have to call on it to push and it’s not there. That’s kind of what happened. Ken is dealing with an old injury that jumped back. He has been through it before in years past, and we just have to get him through it and see if he can play Thursday night. I don’t know.”

“I’ll take it one week at a time, one day at a time.”

Unfortunately for the Seahawks, they don’t have a whole lotta time  . . . Seattle and San Francisco are set to kickoff Thursday night at Lumen Field.
