Will Clemson be upset in Death Valley this season?

Clemson has won 34 consecutive games at Memorial Stadium, but one analyst believes an ACC team could upset the Tigers this upcoming season.

Coming off a 10-3 season last year, Clemson will host seven games at Memorial Stadium in 2022, and one analyst believes the Tigers could be on home-upset watch in a particular matchup.

Most notably, Clemson will host NC State, Miami and South Carolina. The Tigers have won 34 consecutive games at Memorial Stadium, but in his latest bold predictions post, 247Sports’ Brad Crawford believes that the streak could end when the two teams play on October 1.

Here’s what Crawford said could happen to Clemson in 2022.

NC State Ends Clemson’s Streak, But Fails In ACC Quest

College Football Playoff hopeful NC State will fail in its quest to win the ACC Championship Game this season, but Wolfpack fans will be thinking final four — and rightfully so — after snapping Clemson’s 34-game home winning streak Oct. 1. The Tigers haven’t lost at Memorial Stadium since 2016, the longest active home winning steak in college football. NC State broke the hex against Clemson last season with an overtime win in Raleigh and are arguably the Tigers’ toughest opponent this fall given what the Wolfpack are bringing back after a nine-win campaign. After five weeks and this win, NC State will be ranked inside the top 10 nationally.

The week before hosting NC State, Clemson will have to travel to last year’s Atlantic Division winner, Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons were 11-3 last season, so having to play NC State coming off that game is no easy feat.

Although Clemson struggled against the Wolfpack last year, history is on the Tigers’ side. Before Clemson’s loss in 2021, the Tigers had won eight straight matchups against NC State. Playing at home bodes even better for Clemson, as the last time NC State defeated the Tigers in Memorial Stadium was in 2002.

In last season’s matchup with NC State, Clemson ultimately fell to 27-21, a game in which the Tigers’ offense struggled to move the ball. Clemson had 214 total yards and 10 first downs and was 2-for-11 on third down. The offense returns 10 starters from last season and is expected to be healthier, so coupled with a home crowd, it should produce more than 21 points in October.

Ranking all 14 SEC football stadiums from worst to first

The SEC is home to 14 teams that have some very unique stadiums that offer a wide variety of experiences. Here’s how they rank.

The SEC is home to not only some of the strongest football teams in the nation, but some of the most dedicated fans. All 14 teams, soon to be 16, have their own home fields and the stadiums in which those fields reside are considered a special and sometime sacred place to many fans.

Recently our friends over at UGA Wire ranked all 14 SEC college towns. We decided it’s time to dig a little bit deeper and rank the stadiums within those towns.

Whether it be a daunting setting that hosts over 100,000 people in Baton Rouge, Louisiana or a smaller horseshoe stadium that offers the visiting team a home field advantage is Nashville, the SEC has a wide variety of stadiums.

Here’s how we rank them.

Construction is underway in Memorial Stadium to add one of the nation’s largest scoreboards.  Clemson didn’t waste any time once the season was over getting the upgrade work underway.

Clemson University’s Board of Trustees officially approved Phase 2 of facility improvements to Memorial Stadium in July.  The improvements will cost $65 million. The original plan was estimated at a of cost $68.7 million.

The updated plan also eliminates the additional seating in the east end zone that was part of the initial approval. Part A of the Phase 2 improvements includes premium seating in the West Zone with the addition of the concourse club and a new video board in the east end zone. It is scheduled to be completed in August of 2022.

The new renovations call for a new video board, which will measure 126 feet wide and 57 feet tall. Once it is completed, it will be ranked second in the ACC behind Florida State’s and eighth in the nation overall.

Radakovich spoke to TCI about the upgraded in July.

“Our fans have options,” he said. “We want to make sure when they come to the stadium, they feel like they are getting the best value for their money. Not only with the product out on the field, but the way that the whole game day atmosphere is pulled together.

“That is one of the reasons why the scoreboard was so big from the standpoint of getting that done and having that increased amenity there, as well as for those who are interested in that club experience and getting a new amount of inventory for our club patrons.”

Clemson fans once again made their presence felt on Saturday at Death Valley, as was the case all season long.

Per Ross Taylor, Clemson Assistant Athletic Director for Football Communications, Wake Forest’s six false starts in Saturday’s loss to Clemson are tied for the most by an opponent at Death Valley since 2014.

Taylor also noted on Twitter that the Clemson faithful helped induce 24 false starts at Death Valley in 2021, with 20 of those coming in the last four games there.

There’s no question Clemson fans have played a big role in helping the Tigers win 34 consecutive home games, a school record for both the longest home winning streak and longest home unbeaten streak in school history (as well as the nation’s longest active home winning streak).

Arkansas and LSU back in a primetime slot

The Battle for the Golden Boot will take place at night again, with kickoff announced by the SEC on Monday for 6:30 on November 13.

The long drag of daytime kickoffs for Arkansas football is over.

Only problem is that the game is in ‘Death Valley’ as the Razorbacks were given a 6:30 p.m. time slot with LSU next Saturday.

Arkansas faced the Tigers at night two years ago the week after it fired Chad Morris, as KJ Jefferson got his first start and Jack Lindsey even threw a touchdown pass against the eventual national champions.

The Razorbacks’ last win in Tiger Stadium also came at night, a 31-14 victory over the No. 9 Bayou Bengals on ESPN.

Alabama’s all-time record against LSU

The Alabama-LSU matchup is something we all look forward to each season. Here is a closer look at Alabama’s all-time record against the Tigers of LSU.

Ever since Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa, the Alabama and LSU matchup has been one of the most anticipated each season.

Even before Saban arrived the rivalry was one of the best in the SEC, Saban added just a little extra flare.

In Saban’s first season at Alabama, LSU got the best of Saban and the Tide, winning 41-34 in Tuscaloosa. The next season, Saban took a more talented team to Baton Rouge and beat the Tigers in Death Valley 27-21 in overtime.

In Saban’s tenure at Alabama, the Crimson Tide owns an 11-4 record over the Tigers of LSU. One of those wins, of course, was for a BCS National Championship in January of 2012.

One of the most famous games between the two programs is what is known as ‘The Game of the Century’, a matchup that LSU won 9-6.

The two schools first met way back in November of 1895 when LSU beat Alabama 12-6.

Overall, Alabama owns a resounding 54-26-5 series advantage over the LSU Tigers.

This Saturday the two teams will renew their heated rivalry inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium at 6:00 p.m. CT on ESPN.

LSU lifts COVID-19 protocols at Tiger Stadium

LSU has made the decision to lift their COVID-19 protocols

Due to the declining number of COVID-19 cases in the state of Louisiana, LSU announced today it’s lifting its COVID-19 protocols at Tiger Stadium, starting with the Oct. 16 against Florida.

Fans and attendees will still be required to wear masks in the indoor portions of the stadium, but proof of a vaccine or a negative test within 72 hours will no longer be required.

“The COVID-19 rates in Louisiana have dropped dramatically across the state over the last couple of weeks, and today, the state has a positivity rate below five percent,” said Dr. Catherine O’Neal, Chief Medical Officer at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge and a member of the SEC’s Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force. “Because of this success, we are able to lift the vaccine and testing requirements for entry into Tiger Stadium. By balancing mitigation efforts and risk in the ongoing fight to end the pandemic, we can protect our community and safely celebrate the traditions that bring us together.”

Gameday testing, fast pass pre-verification, and all other entrance-related procedures will no longer be in place. Masks will no longer be required in outdoor locations of the stadium for guests under 12 years of age.

LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward thanked the fans for stepping up and helping stop the spread of the virus.

“Their commitment to protecting our community and supporting our student-athletes has never wavered.,” Woodward said in a statement. “We remain fully committed to providing a gameday experience that is as safe and as enjoyable as possible for all guests, and we will continue to work with University leadership and rely on medical expertise to ensure we are taking reasonable and necessary precautions to protect the health of our community.”

‘The best atmosphere I’ve played in’: Clemson players rave about Death Valley crowd Saturday night

Last season, due to COVID, Clemson limited capacity at Death Valley to 19,000 fans for each of its home games.

But last Saturday, with Clemson back to full capacity in 2021, Death Valley was packed and rocking for the first night game there in quite some time.

Clemson sophomore running back Kobe Pace said Monday the fans helped fuel the Tigers in their 19-13 victory over Boston College.

“The crowd was there. I loved it,” said Pace, who recorded a career-high 125 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown on Saturday. “It was there the whole game. Just the atmosphere there was crazy. It was there. I loved it, and we fed off the energy from the crowd.”

With the crowd at Death Valley cheering the Tigers on, Clemson won its 31st consecutive home game to extend its school record for both the longest home winning streak and longest home unbeaten streak in school history (as well as extend the nation’s longest active home winning streak).

Clemson junior cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. can’t think of a game in which he’s played in a better environment than the one Saturday night.

“Our fans are loud,” Booth said Monday. “They were there when we needed them the most. It was crazy out there. That was probably the best atmosphere I’ve played in. That was crazy. Our fans were great Saturday, and we can’t thank them enough for how we showed up and showed out.”

The 79,159 fans that were in attendance certainly made their presence felt and had an impact on the game.

Boston College had five false starts in the contest, the most by an FBS opponent in Death Valley since NC State in 2016 (six).

“It was so nice to see the crowd back in Death Valley for a night game again,” Clemson super senior safety Nolan Turner said Monday. “I can’t even really remember the last true home night game we had. It must’ve been 2019. But it was super special to get the crowd back. They’re such a big part of the game, the crowd noise that helps on our side of the ball on defense, and they really do play such a big factor. Death Valley gets loud. It really does, and there’s not a whole lot of places that compare to it.”

In his postgame press conference, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave kudos to the crowd that gathered at Death Valley on Saturday night and was loud throughout the Tigers’ 19-13 win over Boston College.

Swinney tipped his hat to the 79,159 fans that were in attendance and talked about how impactful the Clemson faithful were while supporting the Tigers.

Boston College had five false starts in the contest, the most by an FBS opponent in Death Valley since NC State in 2016 (six).

“Amazing crowd,” Swinney said. “I thought our crowd was the difference in the game tonight. They were absolutely amazing, all the way to the last play. It definitely, I think, impacted and affected the game the way a great crowd can do. It was awesome to be a part of a night game in The Valley again.”
