Sixers viewed as team trending upward after big offseason moves

The Philadelphia 76ers are seen as a team trending upward in the Eastern Conference after their offseason moves.

The Philadelphia 76ers worked very quickly in the 2022 offseason. They made a trade on draft night, acquiring De’Anthony Melton to add depth. They received help from James Harden when he opted out of his deal, giving the team money to sign PJ Tucker, Danuel House Jr. and Trevelin Queen in free agency.

All of the moves the Sixers have made make them feel much more confident in being able to break through in the Eastern Conference. They have a strong star duo, Joel Embiid and Harden, and quality depth and role players around them.

In terms of their rising stock in the East, they are trending upward as Bleacher Report puts it:

The PJ Tucker signing might have gotten more publicity — and he can certainly help in the short term — but the Philadelphia 76ers’ real coup this summer was the trade for De’Anthony Melton.

Philadelphia sent Danny Green (who may miss all of the 2022-23 season with a torn ACL) and the draft pick that became David Roddy for Melton, who’s sixth in the NBA in steal percentage over the last two seasons.

He’s far from a one-trick pony, though. Over the same span, Melton has hit 38.8 percent of his three-point attempts and showed off some decent facilitation chops as well.

The Sixers will likely call upon Danuel House Jr. to do the same. The last time he was on a Daryl Morey-assembled team, he averaged 9.7 points and shot 37.3 percent from deep over his three full seasons with the Houston Rockets.

The Tucker addition is getting all of the love and the majority of the attention, but the additions of Melton, House Jr. and maybe even Queen will definitely play a role in whatever Philadelphia does in the upcoming season. There is no doubt that this was a successful offseason for Daryl Morey and the front office.

Breaking down potential lineups for 2022-23 Philadelphia 76ers

Here is a breakdown of lineup combinations the Philadelphia 76ers can throw out there for the 2022-23 season.

The Philadelphia 76ers head into the 2022-23 season with expectations of being one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. They have two legitimate stars, Joel Embiid and James Harden, leading the way; a rising star, Tyrese Maxey; and solid additions via trades and free agent signings.

Those new additions include scrappy guard De’Anthony Melton, former NBA champion PJ Tucker, and good 3-and-D contributor Danuel House Jr. With the versatility those additions offer, the Sixers can throw out a variety of lineups. Sixers Wire breaks down a few of the lineups coach Doc Rivers can use.

B/R praises Sixers for fixing perimeter defense issues in the offseason

The Philadelphia 76ers receive praise for addressing their perimeter defensive issues.

The Philadelphia 76ers had a few needs that had to be addressed in the offseason, and they were did so in a big way. The Sixers needed more depth around their stars, and they needed players who could contribute at both ends.

Considering their perimeter defenders last season, the Sixers needed help in that area. They moved Danny Green, who was losing a step on defense, and acquired De’Anthony Melton while signing PJ Tucker and Danuel House Jr. in free agency. All of those additions are expected to help Philadelphia on both ends.

Bleacher Report gave the Sixers praise for fixing their perimeter defense issues:

The 76ers understood the assignment.

James Harden’s pay cut opened the door to add Tucker and House, two players who can defend all over the floor at a high level and hit open shots. Melton finished second in the NBA in steal percentage last season (3 percent) and will flourish as a disrupter off the bench.

Trading Danny Green in the deal to get Melton is a big upgrade as well, as the 35-year-old had slipped defensively even before suffering a knee injury during the playoffs.

Philly already had plenty of star power and now did an excellent job of filling in the gaps. The 37-year-old Tucker’s three-year deal may not age well, but he’ll more than earn his money this season.

The Tucker deal may receive some head scratching from some around the league due to the fact that he will be 40 by the time his contract expires, but he is going to be a very important addition to this team as it navigates life in the Eastern Conference.

The Philadelphia 76ers figure to be one of the top teams in the league considering the talent they have and the upgrades they made over the offseason.

Doc Rivers reacts to tampering charges, new additions for Sixers

Coach Doc Rivers reacts to the tampering charges and the new additions the Philadelphia 76ers made in the offseason.

The Philadelphia 76ers had a relatively successful offseason after they were able to upgrade their roster depth surrounding their star duo of Joel Embiid and James Harden. They brought in toughness and players who can produce on both ends of the floor which obviously helps.

The Sixers made a draft night trade for De’Anthony Melton and then they also went out in free agency and brought in PJ Tucker and Danuel House Jr. on deals in order to upgrade the roster.

However, the Sixers are currently under investigation for tampering by the NBA after Harden took a big pay cut in order to get Tucker and House Jr. The league thinks that there is some tampering involved, but coach Doc Rivers joined “The VC Show with Vince Carter” to discuss the charges as well as the new additions to his roster.

Sixers receive A-minus grade for offseason moves from The Athletic

The Philadelphia 76ers receive an A-minus grade for their offseason moves by The Athletic.

The Philadelphia 76ers did not have many resources available to make additions to their roster around Joel Embiid and James Harden, but they made several moves thanks to Harden not exercising his $47.3 million player option.

The Beard opting out gave Philadelphia the financial flexibility to sign PJ Tucker and Danuel House Jr. in free agency, upgrading the roster. Both add toughness as well as legitimate 3-and-D options to help the team move forward. They also added De’Anthony Melton in a draft night trade.

The NBA is investigating the Sixers for tampering charges, but it doesn’t change the fact they made big moves to become a better team. The Athletic recognized this and gave Philadelphia a grade of A-minus for their offseason moves:

No, the Sixers didn’t make the splashiest moves this offseason. But they did as well as I could’ve imagined considering the limited resources available. James Harden took a major pay cut in 2022-23, and he is now reunited with both PJ Tucker and Danuel House Jr. because of it. The Sixers were also able to turn Danny Green’s contract and the No. 23 pick into De’Anthony Melton. All three acquisitions addressed their biggest roster issue: wing defense and depth. There might be more to come, and there’s still the question of whether it’s enough to get over the hump, but this has been a quietly rock-solid offseason in Philly.

[pickup_prop id=”25984″]

After this very solid offseason, the core of Embiid, Harden, Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris combined with the Tucker, House Jr. and Melton make this roster the deepest on paper during the Embiid era.

De’Anthony Melton mentioned as most impactful addition for Sixers

De’Anthony Melton is mentioned as the most impactful addition for the Philadelphia 76ers.

When it comes to the Philadelphia 76ers and the offseason additions they made, the focus is on PJ Tucker and Danuel House Jr. who are both expected to play a big role in the team’s success.

However, there is another addition the team made on draft night that seems to be under the radar a bit.

Philadelphia acquired De’Anthony Melton from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for the No. 23 pick and veteran Danny Green. Melton is expected to provide some 3-and-D abilities to Philadelphia off their bench and stabilize the second unit behind what is expected a strong starting lineup.

ESPN put together their 5-on-5 segment to discuss the offseason and the topic of the most impactful offseason addition was discussed and Jamal Collier picked Melton:

De’Anthony Melton to the Philadelphia 76ers. Melton fit nicely with the Memphis Grizzlies, playing next to Morant and filling in while Morant was injured. He’s exactly the kind of player Philly needs after losing Seth Curry at the trade deadline. He’s a good 3-point shooter, solid defender, quick and going to fit well with the rest of the team.

Melton averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 37.4% from deep off the bench for the Grizzlies in the 2021-22 season. He was a big piece of their success and Philadelphia is hoping he can bring that production to the City of Brotherly Love.

New addition De’Anthony Melton named most underrated player on Sixers

New addition De’Anthony Melton has been identified as the most underrated player on the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 2022-23 season is still roughly two months away, but the Philadelphia 76ers have made a few solid additions to their roster to improve the depth around Joel Embiid and James Harden.

One of those additions was a draft night trade to acquire De’Anthony Melton from the Memphis Grizzlies. The 4-year guard out of USC is expected to provide some good production on both ends of the floor as he is a solid perimeter defender and he can also knock down an open triple which is critical on this Sixers team.

He averaged 10.8 points per game in the 2021-22 season with the Grizzlies and therefore, he might be a bit underrated. A list of the underrated players on every team put together by Bleacher Report has identified Melton as the underrated player for the Sixers:

On offense, he can create shots for himself and teammates, splash open ones from distance and, if the runway is clear, finish at the basket. On defense, the 6’2″ guard uses his near-6’9″ wingspan, instincts and motor to play bigger than his size and cause all kinds of havoc. His teams have always played better with him than without at an average of 4.4 points per 100 possessions for his career.

Melton will bring a lot of value to the Sixers as somebody who can provide two-way play. The Sixers have been in need of somebody who can give play on either side and Philadelphia got themselves a nice player on draft night to add to their chase for a title.
