Auburn football recruiting roundup, targets and official visits

Here is a look at Auburn’s current commits for the 2022 class and some of the Tigers top targets as well as any visits they have planned.

Bryan Harsin and his staff have yet to host any players on an official visit due to the NCAA’s recruiting dead period that was put in place due to COVID-19. The end may be in sight as the period is expected to expire on May 31 and recruits will once again be able to take an official visit.

With that approaching here is a look at Auburn’s current commits for the 2022 class and some of the Tigers top targets as well as any visits they have planned.

Another Extension on Dead Period for All NCAA Division I Sports

The good news is COVID-19 vaccines are slowly bringing our country closer to a return to normality one day at a time.

The good news is COVID-19 vaccines are slowly bringing our country closer to a return to normality one day at a time. The bad news is “slowly” is the keyword here in that they’re not being rolled out fast enough. That being the case, the NCAA has decided it’s too risky for in-person recruiting to continue at this time. The Athletic is reporting that the NCAA has extended its dead period for all Division I sports through the end of May:

This means that whenever the dead period ends, recruits and coaches will, at the very least, have gone well over a year without being able to see each other in the flesh. That’s not good for recruits who can’t afford to make unofficial campus visits. Not every amateur athlete hoping to compete at the next level is able to travel around the country at will searching for their next opportunity. There’s no question whenever actual visits are allowed to resume, plenty of stories will be written about how the futures of so many talented athletes were affected by this pandemic.

NCAA Division I Council extends recruiting ‘dead period’ to April 15

The NCAA’s Division I Council announced that it will extend the recruiting dead period for all sports until April 15, 2020 per press release

The National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Council announced on Wednesday that the recruiting dead period in all sports has been extended until April 15, 2021. The organization cited the negative trend the coronavirus pandemic has taken recently and its concern for coaches, prospective student-athletes and their families.

The NCAA council’s initial statement is provided below.

“The COVID-19 numbers are not trending in the right direction for the Council to allow in-person recruiting and the associated long-distance travel for coaches, prospective student-athletes and their families,” said Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Pennsylvania. “We acknowledge the impact the restrictions are having on prospective student-athletes and coaches alike, and we will continue to assess how to best balance health and safety concerns with the desire to support prospectives and coaches in the recruiting process.”

Further, the press release added the following adjustments to allow more flexibility for virtual recruiting.

Members also voted to permit additional flexibility in virtual recruiting in football by allowing all coaches, full-time school staff members and current students to conduct recruiting calls (telephone calls and video calls) without a countable coach being present. This flexibility, proposed by the Football Oversight Committee, includes volunteer coaches in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Council plans to address similar flexibility for other sports at its December meeting.

The dead period extension was supported by the oversight committees for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. Members acknowledged that while Divisions II and III had loosened recruiting restrictions, Division I schools are managing active fall sport seasons, which is not the case at most schools in Divisions II and III.

NCAA Again Extends Recruiting Dead Period

The NCAA again has extended their recruiting dead period. Find out for how long this time….

It hardly comes as a surprise but the NCAA has again extended it’s recruiting dead period, this time doing so through the New Year.

The announcement came on Thursday afternoon that official visits and perspective players or their family members meeting with any coaches remain prohibited.

Despite the troubles of getting players to make visits to Notre Dame’s campus the Irish have been on a solid recruiting run recently.  Now can they finish the job with a few of their final 2021 targets with them in all likelihood not being able to get on campus before signing day?

There may be some surprisingly good news that comes with this and recruits that ultimately commit despite not making a visit but I wouldn’t be surprised if you see a de-commitment or two as a result.

Just be prepared and don’t freak out too badly if and when it does.

Release: NCAA’s DI Council adopts emergency legislation, extends dead period

NCAA D1 council adopted emergency legislation on Wednesday. They also extended the recruiting dead period until the end of September.

This release from the NCAA at 6:27 p.m. ET on Wednesday, August 12, 2020:

Council recommends protections, adopts emergency legislation

Recruiting dead period extended

The Division I Council recommended the Division I Board of Directors adopt some minimum protections for student-athletes whose sport seasons are impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and will finalize recommendations before Aug. 21. The Council met virtually Wednesday.

Members indicated the recommendations decided Wednesday are the minimum and members may decide to recommend additional protections for student-athletes at the Aug. 19 Council meeting.

Last week, the NCAA Board of Governors required each division to adjust rules to support student-athletes whose seasons were impacted by COVID-19, similar to decisions that were made for spring sport student-athletes. The original deadline was Aug. 14, but membership feedback prompted the executive committee of the Board of Governors to extend that deadline until Aug. 21 to allow for additional conversations and input from stakeholders, including student-athletes.

The Council recommended the board provide fall sport student-athletes who compete and then opt out of future participation or have a season cut short due to COVID-19: (1) an extension of their five-year period of eligibility; and (2) an additional season of competition if they participate in 50% or less of the maximum number of competitions allowed in each sport by Division I rules.

NCAA Again Extends Recruiting Dead Period

It’s not surprising news but Wednesday night the NCAA again extended their dead period for recruiting. Find out why and for how long here

What started in March as a reaction to the COVID-19 outbreak has continued to today and will go through at least July 31 as the NCAA has again extended their recruiting dead period.

From Wednesday evenings release from the NCAA:

The Division I Council Coordination Committee extended the recruiting dead period in all sports through July 31.

“The extension maintains consistent recruiting rules for all sports and allows coaches to focus on the student-athletes who may be returning to campus,” said Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Pennsylvania. “The committee is committed to reviewing the dead period again in late June or early July.”

The committee will regularly evaluate the dead period, continuing to be guided by medical experts.

Virtual Physical Activities

Additionally, the committee decided to allow strength and conditioning coaches to virtually observe voluntary physical workouts for health and safety purposes but only if requested by the student-athlete. The measure goes into effect June 1. The strength and conditioning coach will be allowed to observe the workouts and discuss items related to voluntary workouts but not direct or conduct the workout.

The decision was supported by the Committee on Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports Prevention and Performance Subcommittee. The subcommittee encouraged schools that decide to allow their strength and conditioning coaches to observe voluntary workouts to proactively consider the school’s overarching responsibility to protect the health of and provide a safe environment for each student-athlete. More specifically, the subcommittee stressed that schools should plan for how the strength and conditioning coach should respond if they observe an unsafe workout environment or in the event that a medical emergency occurs during a voluntary session.

The committee will continue to explore the opportunity for strength and conditioning coaches to conduct voluntary workouts virtually, as they do during in-person, on-campus voluntary workouts.

So with that announcement comes the end of any wishes of recruiting visits this summer.  The question now turns to the fall where we’re not certain games will even be played yet, let alone whether or not perspective student-athletes will be able to make their visits then.

NCAA Extends Recruitng Dead Period Through June

The NCAA extended their recruiting dead period again on Wednesday, this time through June. What happens now? Your guess is as good as mine

If you were looking for good news from the NCAA in terms of things carrying on and getting back to normal, Wednesday was a bad day for you as the organization announced that the D-I recruiting dead period that has been in place since March has now been extended through all of June.

June had become a hot-spot for official visits and commitments across the college sports landscape but the visit part of that clearly won’t be happening this year.

Another key part of June on the football calendar in terms of recruiting are the annual summer camps that have all now been cancelled as well.

Could official visit move back to July or August now, provided the dead period lifts after June?  I can sit and pretend to know but like almost everything else in regards to college sports, specifically football right now, your guess is as good as anyones,
