Prediction

New England 3, DC United 1

Moneyline (ML)

NEW ENGLAND (+110) took care of Montreal 1-0 in the opening match, while DC United (+225) and Toronto FC played to a 2-2 draw in their opener. DC is a bit nicked up, missing some key contributors. That’s not good against a Revs side that is nearly whole. While United has posted a 2-1-2 mark in the previous five head-to-head meetings, you can expect the Revs to return the favor in this one.

A winning $10 wager on New England (+110) fetches a net profit of $11.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 2.5 (-150) is worth a small-unit play, as DC’s defense was a bit shaky in its 2-2 draw in the opening match. Look for New England to take advantage, and potentially take care of the Over all by itself.

DC United – Toronto FC postponed moments before game due to positive coronavirus test

The match was postponed just moments before kickoff due to a positive COVID-19 test on one team, and an inconclusive test on the other.

D.C. United was slated to take on Toronto FC on Sunday morning in the MLS is Back Tournament, but the game was postponed just minutes before the scheduled 9 a.m. kickoff.

The cause for the postponement were COVID-19 tests from both teams, according to MLS Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott, who spoke publicly on Sunday morning. One player on D.C. United tested positively, Abbott said, but not a “final positive,” suggesting the results haven’t been confirmed.

A Toronto player had an inconclusive test, according to Abbott.

MLS issued a statement as well, clarifying that they will wait for results of re-tests prior to playing the match.

Half an hour before kickoff, The Athletic’s Matt Pyzdrowski and ESPN’s Stefano Fusaro independently reported that the game was being postponed.

The Washington Post’s Steven Goff had more — D.C. United’s backup striker, Erik Sorga, was left off the game-day roster despite not being injured.

Prediction

Toronto FC 2, DC United 1

Moneyline (ML)

Toronto FC (-125) is the favorite to win its opening match of the MLS is Back Tournament over DC United (+310). Toronto started its 2020 MLS regular season with a 2-2 draw at the San Jose Earthquakes and a 1-0 home win over New York City FC.

United opened the season with a 2-1 home loss to the Colorado Rapids, but rebounded to beat Inter Miami CF 2-1 before the season was put on hold.

Each team has one win with the two sides playing to three draws in their last five meetings dating back to June 2018. Going back to last season and the 2019 MLS Cup, TFC is 4-1-1 in its last six games. DCU is 2-2-2.

Both sides are missing just one player, as MF Michael Bradley (ankle) returns for TFC and MF Federico Higuain (knee) suits up for DCU. Side with the favorites, who have had the chance to benefit from a proper rest period after going to the MLS Cup three of the last four seasons.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on TFC to win returns a profit of $8. Betting this exact score at +775 odds would return a profit of $77.50 on a $10 bet.

Over/Under (O/U)

The projected goal total is set at 2.5. TFC cruised to a lopsided 5-1 victory when the two clubs last met last October, snapping a stretch of three games between the two which saw a total of just three goals scored (DC United went 1-0-2).

Two of the first three games of the MLS tournament ended 1-0, but expect a little more offense from these two veteran clubs.

Prediction

Colorado Rapids 1, DC United 0

Moneyline (ML)

DC United (-106) is favored at home, having won the last three head-to-head meetings dating back to the 2017 campaign. United outscored the Rapids 6-3 over those three games. Wayne Rooney and Luciano Acosta have since moved on, and Arriola may be sidelined for the full season following his preseason injury. There is value in backing COLORADO RAPIDS (+250) against a different DC United club than with which they’ve historically struggled.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Colorado to win returns a profit of $25.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 2.5 (+130). The last two head-to-head showdowns played to goal totals of 5 and 3, but this is the earliest in the season the two sides have met. DC United lost firepower this offseason and Colorado Rapids shored up the defense with additions of Lalas Abubakar and Auston Trusty, despite the loss of GK Tim Howard to retirement.

It will also be 40 degrees in D.C. Saturday afternoon, and it will be another factor favoring the Under in the season opener.
