It quite literally could not get worse for the Oklahoma Sooners at this point after a 49-0 loss to the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Showdown.
This loss was historic for the Sooners. It’s the first time they’ve been shutout by the Texas Longhorns since 1965.
The big story during the pregame was Dillon Gabriel. OU’s starting quarterback was warming up and even took reps with the starters, but when the teams came out of the tunnel for the start of the game, Gabriel was not dressed. Pittsburgh transfer Davis Beville, as expected, played in his place.
Beville didn’t look good. He struggled to complete the easiest of passes and failed to show even a little bit of touch on his throws. When called upon to run it himself, he couldn’t do it.
Brayden Willis led the team in receiving yards, while Marvin Mims finished the game with negative yards receiving.
Oklahoma committed to the wildcat offense for much of the game and did find some success, but ultimately could not find the end zone with it.
Quinn Ewers finally returned to the field and was nearly perfect. OU’s defense was at the mercy of Texas’ receivers and again had no idea where the ball was. The Longhorns killed the Sooners with play-action.
Much like last year’s game, Bijan Robinson ran all over the Sooners. Even when the Sooners did catch him in the backfield, he made it back to the line of scrimmage and further each time. Robinson ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns against the Sooners.
Once again, the OU secondary couldn’t hang with their opposition. Quinn Ewers had ample windows to throw into throughout the game and plenty of time to do so.
The Sooners have learned over the past two weeks just how bad their QB room is without Dillon Gabriel. Jeff Lebby showed no willingness to trust Beville to throw the ball downfield, and Beville gave him no reason to.
Lebby stuck with Beville all the way until the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter. Nick Evers came in to replace him. Lebby proceeded to call two runs a play-action pass, which was incomplete.
The Sooners have lost three straight games for the first time this century and sit at the bottom of the Big 12. They will come home to Norman next week to face the Kansas Jayhawks.
