Oklahoma Sooners underrated heading into 2022?

After being considered overrated by a couple of writers in CBS Sports Big 12 preview, others consider the Sooners underrated ahead of 2022.

CBS Sports has a deep roster of writers with varying opinions, especially regarding college football. Last week, CBS Sports writers chronicled the Big 12, where they looked at the league heading into 2022. Oklahoma was listed as one of the Big 12’s more overrated teams by writers Shehan Jeyarajah and Barrett Sallee.

This time around, the CBS Sports’ writing team is looking at the college football landscape as a whole, and lo and behold, Oklahoma is on the other side of the discussion. CBS Sports David Cobb believes Oklahoma is underrated as the 2022 season approaches.

The Big 12 looks wide open at the top as five programs, which translates to half the league, received at least one first-place vote in the preseason media poll. But that scattershot of opinions discounts how well-equipped Oklahoma is to thrive in Year 1 under new coach Brent Venables. The offense won’t miss a beat with UCF transfer Dillon Gabriel at quarterback, and the defense should immediately improve after years of mediocrity under former coach Lincoln Riley. With Baylor’s questions at the skill positions, Oklahoma State’s significant defensive losses and the general inconsistency of Texas, it’s Oklahoma that still stands out as the class of the Big 12. – Cobb, CBS Sports

In contrast to his colleagues, Cobb notes how Oklahoma has equipped itself to handle the turnover. Another factor Cobb considered are the losses its direct competition underwent as well.

You don’t win six straight conference titles and then fade into obscurity at a program with the resources of Oklahoma. Especially if you hired one of the sport’s best defensive minds’ as your head coach and one of the brightest offensive minds to pair with him.

Cobb and his colleague Jerry Palm even predicted that Oklahoma would make the College Football Playoff as the fourth seed along with Ohio State, Alabama, and Clemson.

Venables was Cobb and Palm’s preseason pick for coach of the year.

The Sooners’ steady athletic leadership picked the perfect replacement for Riley by hiring a coveted name with Oklahoma roots in Venables, the long-time Clemson defensive coordinator. Though defense is his speciality, he already avoided the trap of pigeon-holing his program into a one-dimensional box by hiring Jeff Lebby as offensive coordinator. Venables and Lebby have been among the best coordinators in the sport for several years, and their coalescence at a university of personal significance to both is a recipe for immediate success. Venables will get the Sooners headed in the right direction defensively while implementing elements of Clemson’s culture in a way that keeps this team in national title contention. – Cobb, CBS Sports

This season will be a test of different proportions for Venables in his first year as a head coach. If the Sooners find themselves in the playoffs, there’s no reason Venables wouldn’t deserve coach of the year consideration.

David Cobb of CBS Sports considers betting under win total on MSU in 2022 as a best bet

David Cobb of CBS Sports isn’t particularly high on the Spartans entering the 2022 season

David Cobb of CBS Sports isn’t particularly high on the Spartans entering the 2022 season, and believes Michigan State may struggle to even reach a bowl game.

Cobb released his best bets on win totals entering the 2022 season, and he considers betting the under on Michigan State one of those easy money bets. The win total varies from sportsbook but in his article he lists the win total at 7.5 so he doesn’t believe Michigan State will finish better than 7-5 this year.

In the article, Cobb mentions the loss of star running back Kenneth Walker III and a tough schedule as his reasoning for betting the under. Here’s a bit of what he had to say about Michigan State:

“Expect a leveling off from the Spartans after the elation of last season’s 11-2 ride and Peach Bowl victory. With Heisman finalist Kenneth Walker III on to the NFL, the Spartans must find a new engine against a schedule that appears tougher than the program’s 2021 slate.”

I recently released my predictions for the Spartans and every Big Ten team and I have Michigan State safely topping the over and finishing 9-3 in 2022. I do, however, understand where Cobb is coming from and also worry about that tough schedule should the Spartans run into some key player injuries.

National writer weighs in on whether Clemson’s offense will bounce back this season

Heading into the 2022 campaign, Clemson is looking to rebound from its struggles on offense last season when the Tigers ranked ninth in the ACC in points per game (26.3) and second-to-last in the conference in total yards per game (359.2). D.J. …

Heading into the 2022 campaign, Clemson is looking to rebound from its struggles on offense last season when the Tigers ranked ninth in the ACC in points per game (26.3) and second-to-last in the conference in total yards per game (359.2).

D.J. Uiagalelei had a down year in 2021 after taking over for Trevor Lawrence as Clemson’s starting quarterback, throwing more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (nine) while completing just 55.6 percent of his passes following his stellar freshman debut in 2020 when he threw for 781 yards and four touchdowns with no picks in two starts vs. Boston College and Notre Dame.

In the Orange & White Spring Game, Uiagalelei went 17-of-36 passing for 175 yards and threw an interception, while freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik completed 15-of-23 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Although there wasn’t much offense during Clemson’s spring game — a defensive display that saw the two sides total nine sacks in the first half alone in the White team’s eventual 15-7 win — CBS Sports writer David Cobb still believes the Tigers’ offense is poised to bounce back this season.

“There is a temptation to declare that nothing has improved with Clemson’s offense after its sleepy performance in the spring game,” Cobb wrote this week. “With former offensive coordinator Tony Elliott now the head coach at Virginia and the Tigers reeling from a substandard 2021 season, a 2 of 5 passing performance from D.J. Uiagalelei in the spring game could be interpreted as a perilous omen. However, with Uiagalelei getting pushed by freshman Cade Klubnik in the QB battle and the Tigers’ getting reps against one of the nation’s best defenses, progress is sure to come on offense.”

Cobb added that he doesn’t think Clemson’s offense needs to be spectacular in order for the Tigers to return to the ACC title game, thanks to a defense that figures to be among the best in the country again this fall.

“Remember: Clemson ranked eighth nationally in total defense last season with only Georgia and Wisconsin allowing fewer yards per play,” Cobb wrote. “With a nasty defensive front that includes the likes of Bryan Bresee and Myles Murphy, Clemson’s floor as a program remains high. Even if the offense isn’t elite, it should be improved enough to get the Tigers back in the ACC Championship Game.”

Jabari Smith currently one of the nation’s best freshman according to CBS Sports

Jabari Smith is killing it right now for the Tigers.

It’s evident at this point that Jabari Smith is as good as advertised and should be a top 10 pick in the NBA Draft if he continues to play like he is right now.

David Cobb of CBS Sports listed him among the nation’s best freshmen, putting him at No. 2 in his weekly freshman rankings.

Here is what Cobb had to say about Jabari’s play.

Cobb: Smith leads Auburn in scoring and rebounding and has proven to be all that the Tigers could have hoped for in a top-10 prospect. The 6-10 forward is leading the team in 3-point shooting percentage, he’s hitting his free throws, playing solid defense and showing a willingness to pass. He is a genuine star.

Jabari Smith is currently averaging 16.9 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game, and is leading the team in three-point shooting percentage (43.9%). Smith has been the focal point of Auburn’s offense and will hopefully lead the 7-1 Tigers to a very successful season.
