Alabama’s Matt Rhea reportedly heading to New Orleans to be with the Saints

Alabama will lose one half of its strength and conditioning duo as Matt Rhea is reported to be leaving for New Orleans.

The Crimson Tide made a great hire in 2020 when they reached out and grabbed Matt Rhea to become its Director of Sports Performance, but it seems now that his tenure at Alabama is coming to an end after a solid two seasons of work.

It is being reported by Josh Pate of 247Sports and CBS Sports HQ that Rhea has accepted a position on staff with the New Orleans Saints to assist new head coach Dennis Allen.

Last week, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reported that the Saints were interested in Rhea and David Ballou, the other half of Alabama’s dynamic strength and conditioning duo, as they were looking to replace longtime strength coach Dan Dalrymple.

It appears, according to Pate, that Ballou will remain in Tuscaloosa for the time being, which is sure to be welcome news to Tide fans.

New Orleans Saints reportedly interested in Alabama’s David Ballou and Matt Rhea

Alabama’s Matt Rhea and David Ballou are on the Saints’ radar.

Alabama could potentially lose a pair of valuable assets if the NFL’s New Orleans Saints get their way, as it is being reported by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill that the Saints are interested in hiring Matt Rhea, Director of Sports Science, and David Ballou, Director of Sports Performance, away from the Crimson Tide.

The pair joined the Alabama football program in March of 2020 following the departure of longtime strength and conditioning coordinator Scott Cochran in February of the same year.

Both men were together at Indiana University prior to being offered a spot on Nick Saban’s coveted staff at the Capstone, and both bring valuable knowledge and experience to the table.

Alabama’s football program has suffered noticeably fewer injuries under the dynamic duo of Rhea and Ballou than in years past. It would certainly be a great loss to the program if they were to depart from it.

WATCH: New Alabama S&C coach David Ballou gives workout advice

Alabama’s new Director of Performance, David Ballou, is finding creative ways to get familiar with Tide fans.

Alabama’s new Strength and Condition coach, also known as the Director of Performance, David Ballou didn’t have a lot of time on campus before the coronavirus struck, but he’s finding creative ways to get in front of fans.

On Tuesday, the Alabama football team’s official Twitter account posted a video of Ballou giving people advice on a good workout routine, which included using a deck of cards to do push ups.

Yes, it’s true that what Ballou is suggesting isn’t revolutionary stuff, but it’s still a nice message to share for those who had never heard of trying that sort of workout.

More importantly, this is a way for the former Indiana alum to allow Crimson Tide fans to become more familiar with him, especially considering how COVID-19 has limited the ways you can interact.

Whenever football activities are able to resume, there’s no doubt that Ballou and fellow new hire Matt Rhea will both be integral parts of Alabama’s strength and conditioning program.

The Alabama football program has been hard at work trying to find a suitable replacement for longtime strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran, who left for an on-field coaching position at Georgia earlier this week.

Well, it looks like that search could be coming to an end soon.

According to Tom Brew with Hoosiers Now, the SportsIllustrated site covering Indiana athletics, David Bullou was recently offered the job, and he’s expected to accept it by the end of the weekend:

What makes this move even more interesting is that Indiana’s athletic performance coach, Matt Rhea, is expected to join Ballou on the Crimson Tide’s staff.

Here is what Brew had to say about Ballou:

It would certainly be a home run hire for Alabama, especially considering the timing of Cochran’s departure.
