Patriots name six team captains for 2024 season

The 2024 team captains are set

The 2024 team captains are set for the New England Patriots.

On Monday, the team revealed that David Andrews, Jabrill Peppers, Ja’Whaun Bentley, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Cardona and Deatrich Wise Jr. are the new captains.

Andrews, Bentley and Wise are returning captains from the 2023 season. That group of players also included Mac Jones, Hunter Henry and Matthew Slater.

Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Slater rode off into the sunset in retirement. That helped set the stage for the new captains under first-year head coach Jerod Mayo.

The Patriots are undergoing significant change in their first year without coach Bill Belichick. There have been major personnel and coaching staff changes ahead of a season filled with uncertainty. It’s a rebuilding year that is sure to come with disappointment and frustrations along the way.

But the team has made solid moves in the offseason to set themselves up nicely for the future. It all begins in Sunday’s road clash with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Here’s why Patriots C David Andrews has reportedly been out

Latest report revealed why David Andrews has missed multiple training camp practices

New England Patriots center David Andrews missed consecutive practices in the first week of training camp, and now, we might finally have an answer as to why.

Per the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan, via NESN’s Sean T. McGuire, Andrews has been out of practice for a personal issue. This is not expected to be a long-term thing.

The Patriots have had Nick Leverett fill in for Andrews as the offensive line anchor at center. The line itself has shown promise with rookies Caedan Wallace and Layden Robinson emerging as positive contributors throughout training camp.

Andrews, a longtime team captain, has been a mainstay on the line for the last nine years, appearing in 120 games and starting in 117 of them.

The good news is that he is healthy.

Even though the top offensive line unit has looked better in training camp, Andrews’ presence on the field is still vital to the team’s success. The Patriots are reconstructing their offense, and they can’t afford to have key missing parts.

Patriots OL David Andrews wants to finish career in New England

David Andrews wants to retire a Patriot

New England Patriots center David Andrews is pleased with the contract extension he signed in the offseason. When speaking with media members earlier in the week, he made it clear he wanted to finish his career in New England.

Andrews has quite the story. He went undrafted in 2015 after playing college football at the University of Georgia. Since that moment, he has gone on to win two Super Bowls with the Patriots, while appearing in 120 total games with 117 starts. He was also named to New England’s All-2010s Team.

Andrews signed a one-year, $8 million fully guaranteed contract extension in May. Considering everything he’s meant to the franchise, it’s hard to envision him playing anywhere else.

“It was huge. Obviously want to finish my career here, finish it the right way,” said Andrews.

Andrews has been as dependable as they come at the center position for the Patriots. It would only be right that he’s able to hang up the cleats one day with the team that started it all.

Report: Patriots and OL David Andrews agree to contract extension

The Patriots agreed to a contract extension with David Andrews on Thursday

The New England Patriots and starting center David Andrews agreed to a contract extension on Thursday.

The deal goes through the 2025 season and has a base value of $12 million. The maximum value of the contract is $13 million with $8 million fully guaranteed, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

Andrews, a former undrafted lineman out of the University of Georgia, has been a staple of the New England offensive front ever since he came to the organization in 2015. He has played in 120 games total, starting in 117 of them.

He most recently signed a four-year deal with the Patriots in March 2021.

New England has prioritized extending in-house talent this off-season, including Christian Barmore, Mike Onwenu, Anfernee Jennings and Kyle Dugger.

Bringing Andrews back into the fold is important to help add stability to the Patriots’ young, new-look offensive unit.

Patriots sign former Georgia Bulldog to contract extension

New England Patriots sign former Georgia Bulldogs center to a two-year contract extension worth up to $13 million

The New England Patriots have signed former Georgia Bulldogs center David Andrews to a contract extension through the 2025 NFL season. Andrews will be 32 years old before the start of the NFL season.

The Patriots found a diamond in the rough in Andrews, who started in Week 1 as a rookie after going undrafted in the 2015 NFL draft. Andrews has 117 career NFL starts and including three starts in the Super Bowl. Andrews has won a pair of Super Bowls and vastly outperformed his draft status.

Andrews’ contract is worth a base value of $12 million and the potential to be worth up to $13 million. Andrews has $8 million guaranteed as part of his extension.

ESPN’s Field Yates announced the terms of David Andrews’ contract extension.

David Andrews is a holdover in New England from the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era. He actually played with first-year Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo during his rookie season. Andrews was entering his contract year ahead of the 2024 season.

David Andrews says Jacoby Brissett has been a ‘huge help’ on offense

David Andrews claims Jacoby Brissett has already been a huge help for the Patriots offense

According to New England Patriots center David Andrews, veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been a big help, as the offensive scheme undergoes change.

Brissett has experience in the new offense, having played under offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt in 2022. Now, the two are reunited once again, as the new-look Patriots offense begins to take shape.

Andrews has seen his fair share of offensive coordinators in recent years with this being the third offensive coordinator in three seasons for the Patriots organization. But the arrival of Brissett has clearly made things easier on him and the rest of the offense.

Offensive cohesion is something that has been missing in the past few seasons for the Patriots. There’s hope that will start to change in 2024 with the team working on getting on the right track early.

Revisiting Patriots captain David Andrews’ take on hip-drop tackle in 2023

Revisiting David Andrews’ hip-drop tackle comments after Rhamondre Stevenson’s injury last season

The hip-drop tackle ban was one of the biggest stories in the NFL with multiple players reacting to it.

On Monday, NFL owners unanimously voted to approve a rule that banned the tackling technique. Now, teams will be given a 15-yard penalty if such tackles occur.

The fallout from the rule change had some revisiting comments made by New England Patriots captain David Andrews on the technique last December.

The Patriots were impacted directly with running Rhamondre Stevenson getting injured with a hip-drop tackle against the Los Angeles Chargers. The injury forced him to miss the rest of the season, and the running back depth in New England took a major hit.

Yet, despite the injury to Stevenson, Andrews didn’t condemn the defensive technique.

“It’s the defense’s job to tackle guys, and I don’t think people are doing that with malicious intent,” said Andrews, via Patriots insider Zack Cox. “Eventually, you keep taking away certain plays, taking away certain plays, taking away this, taking away that, what’s going to be left of the game? Look, it’s an unfortunate reality of this game, and no one wants to see that. Guys on other teams don’t want to see guys get hurt. We don’t want to see guys get hurt. But it’s an unfortunate reality of playing in the NFL — playing football at any level.”

The NFL will have its work cut out trying to enforce the rule change consistently, especially at full speed. Regardless, this is just another case of defenders having to adapt to efforts to protect the offensive players.

The Morning After…End of an era, or not?

Will the inevitable rebuild in New England include Bill Belichick as head coach?

While New York Jets players did snow angels after beating the New England Patriots 17-3 in Sunday’s regular season finale, Bill Belichick walked off the field for perhaps the last time as Patriots head coach.

It was a sobering moment that brought a rush of emotions for longtime fans of the team. Belichick was the man responsible for building the greatest dynasty in NFL history.

Even for those ready to say Tom Brady deserves the brunt of the credit for the winning, there is no Brady in New England if Belichick didn’t take him at No. 199 in the 2000 NFL draft. Belichick is the architect, and he deserves the utmost respect for his contributions.

But there’s also the reality that the team needs a new direction after a second straight losing season. They finished 2023 with a 4-13 record and last place in the AFC East. Change is desperately needed.

Is it the sort of change that needs to happen without Belichick, or will the team go a different route, while also staying connected with the greatest coach in NFL history?

Here are some leftover notes from Sunday’s game:

Bills vs. Patriots: Key matchups to watch in Week 17

#Bills vs. #Patriots: Key matchups to watch in Week 17:

The Buffalo Bills will host the New England Patriots in their upcoming Week 17 matchup at Highmark Stadium.

The two teams have been rigorously preparing for the contest throughout the past week. Buffalo (9-6) and New England (4-11) will think they know their upcoming opponent, inside and out, after all the practicing and studying they have put in.

Because of that, despite all the off-field talking, speculation and discussion, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference when it comes to the final outcome of this upcoming weekend.

With that, here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Bills-Patriots matchup:

Bill Belichick raves about center David Andrews ahead of Sunday’s game

Bill Belichick called Patriots center David Andrews a “warrior” heading into Sunday’s game against the Broncos.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick had extremely high praise for David Andrews when he met with the media on Friday morning.

Andrews has been a part of the Patriots organization since the 2015 season. He came to New England as an undrafted free agent and worked his way up to team captain and a dependable starter for the team throughout the course of his career.

The center has started in all 14 games he has played in this season, and he has started in 114 of the 117 games he’s appeared in.

Belichick is not one to offer major praise to players. However, one question prompted him to give Andrews a very strong review, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Zack Cox.

“Fantastic,” Belichick said. “Fantastic. He’s done as good a job — it’s as good as I’ve seen, honestly. Every day, his performance on a daily basis is really exceptional. Attitude, effort, communication, energy, leadership with younger players, leadership with his peers, communication, you name it. And look, like everybody who plays a lot of football, you get banged up and deal with some stuff during the year.

“…He’s shown a lot of physical toughness to play through that, a lot of mental toughness. He would never come out of practice for a play. We have to take him out to kind of help manage some of the bumps and bruises that he has, but this guy is a warrior.”

Andrews has been a fixture on the Patriots’ offensive line for quite some time. He has also been very forthright and open with media during his press conferences. The qualities of dependability, as well as productivity and accountability, have made him a New England fan-favorite.
