Bears sign RB off Dolphins practice squad

Miami loses a depth RB.

The Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears have been involved in a number of transactions with each other including trades for Chase Claypool and Dan Feeney this year.

Now, on Sunday, the Bears are signing a player off of Miami’s practice squad – running back Darrynton Evans.

Evans signed with the Dolphins after roster cuts, but he hasn’t appeared in a game yet this season.

Miami’s running back group is now made up of Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane, Salvon Ahmed, Chris Brooks and Jeff Wilson Jr. (injured reserve).

The Dolphins also now have an open practice squad spot.

Bills’ Darrynton Evans took commercial flight to play vs. Bears

#Bills running back Darrynton Evans, who had nine carries for 65 yards and a touchdown on Saturday, almost had to drive to the game (via @SharifKeaton):

Buffalo Bills running back Darrynton Evans had quite a Saturday.

Not only did he have nine carries for 65 yards and one touchdown, but he also had to do some running before the Bills’ 24-21 preseason finale win over the Chicago Bears.

In Evans’ social media post on X, due to flight issues, he almost had to drive himself to Chicago if he wanted to make the game on time to be able to play.

It isn’t known why Evans was not on Buffalo’s team flight, but the important thing is that he made it to the game in time to pull off some spectacular plays. Evidently it must have been some sort of accident if he was allowed to suit up.

In the game, Evans had a 35-yard run that culminated in a touchdown and along the way, he broke so many tackles that it was hard to count. It was good to see Evans play as well as he did given that he’s competing for the backup RB spot behind presumed starter James Cook.

Bills’ Darrynton Evans was extra happy to score against his former team

Big run for Evans:

Darrynton Evans had a message to share after his big-time effort against the Chicago Bears.

In what likely goes down as the Buffalo Bills’ top highlight from the 2023 preseason, Evans scored an impressive 35-yard touchdown run. He bowled through a few Chicago defenders en route to the end zone.

Evans is still fighting for a roster spot and might have a hard time finding his way onto Buffalo’s final 53-man roster. Regardless, he still was excited to put up points against his former team.

Evans spent part of the 2022 season with the Bears. He had a bit of a extra excitement in his celebration on the field, but Evans did so on social media after the 24-21 Bills win as well.

Evans said it felt good going back to Soldier Field and putting points on the board.

His message is attached below:

Darrynton Evans would even ‘go fill a water bottle’ if the Bills asked

Darrynton Evans would even ‘go fill a water bottle’ if the #Bills asked:

After taking the long scenic route to begin his NFL career, Darrynton Evans is ready to stick around with the Buffalo Bills.

No matter what it takes.

Evans got his chance in Buffalo when he was signed right at the start of training camp. That came after Nyheim Hines sustained a season-ending knee injury. While not wishing that on anyone, Evans is grateful for the chance to make a NFL roster once again, even if that means doing whatever it takes.

“The main thing really is just coming in, finding my role and being there for these guys wherever they need me,” Evans told the Buffalo News. “They could tell me to go fill a water bottle and I’m going to go do it. That’s the type of guy I am.”

Early in camp, Evans joins Buffalo’s backfield but special teams unit as well. The 25-year-old can return kicks and is getting a look there. That’s another hole Hines’ departure leaves and thus far, the Bills are giving up to four players, including Evans, a chance to prove they are the best man for the job.

“(Evans) is a speed guy. He’s had a few injuries that set him back at the start of his career,” Beane said via video conference. “He’s another guy that can catch it out of the backfield and has home run juice ability. We’ll give him a chance and see how he does.”

Evans began his career in 2020 with the Tennessee Titans but only played in six games over his first two seasons due to injury. Evans was then claimed by the Chicago Bears but spent time between their practice squad and roster in 2022. In Chicago, he averaged 4.6 yards per carry on 14 handoffs during six game appearances.

On the loss of Hines, Beane said the loss is disappointing but noted “2024” should be a good year for him. It’s possible his time in Buffalo is not over.

“(Hines) a dynamic, duel returner, and a legit threat. I thought he had a great spring,” Beane said. “We were really excited to use him in the offense.”

Job to be the Bills’ new returner looks wide open

Job to be the #Bills’ new returner looks wide open:

The Buffalo Bills have one positional battle that has recently become wide open.

Replacing Tremaine Edmunds and the starting cornerback spot opposite of Tre’Davious White are noted. But another to keep an eye on as training camp unfolds is the kick return job after the season-ending injury to Nyheim Hines.

It’s anyone’s ball game as of now.

As recently as Sunday, four players were lined up there at Bills training camp. Nearly all of them are new faces.

The one who isn’t is Khalil Shakir. The 2022 fifth-round pick that Buffalo traded up for could be poised to have a much larger role on the Bills in 2023 depending on how training camp goes. He’s also factoring into the slot receiver discussion, but regarding returner, Shakir had his name mentioned.

Bills special teams coordinator Matthew Smiley said via video conference that Shakir and Deonte Harty are two players that will factor in there.

Harty signed in Buffalo this offseason and Smiley likes his experience.

“His comfort level at that position is definitely a benefit,” Smiley said.

Don’t sleep on even newer players, either.

Darrynton Evans was the running back signed to take Hines’ roster spot and he profiles as another versatile piece like Hines. In addition, Andy Isabella, who was participating in his first practice with the Bills on Sunday was also catching punts at practice.

On the latter, head coach Sean McDermott said via video conference that the speed Isabella brings to the table is of interest. At the NFL combine, Isabella ran a blistering 4.31 40-yard dash time.

As training camp rolls on, the numbers will likely be whittled down. For now, it’s an open opportunity for all.

Kick returner action at Bills camp can be found via the Batavia Daily News clip below:

Bills Wire will continue to bring updates out of training camp throughout the summer.

The Buffalo Bills have made a late running back addition to their roster just ahead of the start of 2023 training camp.

Darrynton Evans has signed in Buffalo a day prior to the start of camp. His agency announced that a deal had been struck with the Bills.

Evans was one of three running backs that had a workout in Orchard Park on Monday.

Evans, 25, will essentially replace Nyheim Hines on Buffalo’s roster. Over the weekend, Hines sustained an off-field knee injury during a jet ski accident which will keep him off the field for the entire 2023 season.

Evans profiles as a similar player to Hines.

In addition to his experience as a rusher, like Hines, Evans has returned kicks as well. Evans will be an immediate player to watch when the Bills begin training camp on Wednesday.

Selected in 2020, the Tennessee Titans waived Evans after just two season. Injuries hampered most of his tenure in Tennessee as he only appeared in six games over two years. The 25-year-old recorded 16 carries for 61 yards and four receptions for 38 yards.

Evans was then claimed by the Chicago Bears but spent time between their practice squad and roster in 2022. In Chicago, he averaged 4.6 yards per carry on 14 handoffs during six game appearances.

Earlier this spring, the Indianapolis Colts signed Evans. However, he was released following the 2023 NFL draft.

Evans is likely behind the likes of James Cook, Damien Harris and Latavius Murray for now. There is still a possibility he carves himself out a role by the end of training camp.

Report: Bills expected to sign ex-Titans RB Darrynton Evans

Former Titans RB Darrynton Evans is expected to sign with the Bills.

After reportedly losing running back Nyheim Hines for the season after a jet ski accident, it appears as if the Buffalo Bills may to fill the sudden roster void with former Tennessee Titans running back, Darrynton Evans.

According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, the Bills are expected to sign Evans after he worked out for them on Monday. The terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

The former Appalachian State star was a third-round pick of the Titans back in 2020, playing in five games as a rookie due to injury and totaling 16 touches for 81 yards and one touchdown on the year.

Evans missed most of 2021 with a knee injury before being waived during the 2022 offseason. He was then scooped up by the Chicago Bears prior to the season.

Evans played in six games for the Bears, tallying 15 touches for 97 yards. In total, he saw action on 112 snaps (49 offensive snaps, 63 special teams). In 2023, Evans was inked by the Indianapolis Colts but was waived in May.

Despite the injury, the Bills are seemingly set atop the depth chart with James Cook, Damien Harris, and Latavius Murray on the roster, but Evans gives them another potential option, especially in the return game, where Hines was expected to have a big role.

The App. State product has returned 10 career kicks in the NFL, recording 233 return yards for an average of 22.3 yards per return.

If Evans is going to extend his career another year, he’s undoubtedly going to have to prove his worth on special teams over the coming weeks.
