Jaguars announce 14 players signed to reserve/future contracts

The Jaguars made the addition of 14 players official Tuesday.

A day after the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2023 season ended, the team signed 11 players to reserve/future deals, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

More than a month later, the team has finally announced those signings along with a trio of other players. One of those three is kicker Riley Patterson, whose reunion with the Jaguars popped up on the transaction wire a week ago. The other two, tight end Josh Pederson and receiver Seth Williams, spent the 2023 season with Jacksonville.

Reserve/future deals, typically a minimum-salary contract, don’t count against the team’s salary cap or roster limit until the beginning of the next league year. Essentially that means those type of contracts are a way to keep players while roster limits haven’t yet been expanded back to a maximum of 90 players, which will happen when the new league year begins in March.

The notable omission from the list is running back Snoop Conner, who was picked by the Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Here’s all 14 players who were officially added to the Jaguars’ roster Tuesday on reserve/futures contracts:

Jaguars practice squad tracker: 17 signings announced

The Jaguars finalized their initial 17-man practice squad Wednesday and Thursday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars set their 53-man roster Tuesday and finalized their 17-player practice squad Wednesday and Thursday.

While practice squad players aren’t eligible to play on Sundays unless they’re elevated to the active roster, keeping them gives the Jaguars a chance to develop a player or keep them in the building in the event that injuries open an opportunity.

Last season, the Jaguars got meaningful contributions out of defensive tackle Corey Peters, who spent time on the practice squad before moving up midseason. This year, Jacksonville has cornerback Gregory Junior on the active roster after giving the 2022 sixth-rounder a year to grow on the practice squad.

Jaguars 2023 roster review: OL Darryl Williams

The Jaguars’ Darryl Williams finally made his NFL debut in 2022 after spending almost all of his first three seasons on practice squads.

The brunt of the offseason is in the books and training camp is coming soon. Join us in the NFL’s dead zone with a player-by-player review of the Jaguars roster ahead of the 2023 season.

On Oct. 2, 2022, third-year offensive lineman Darryl Williams was on the field for three snaps — all on special teams — during the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 4 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. For Williams, it was a long time coming.

The former Mississippi State team captain first started his NFL career as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He spent his first two NFL seasons on the Chiefs’ practice squad before he was released by the team in June 2022.

After a brief stint with the New England Patriots, Williams joined the Jaguars and spent almost all of his third NFL season on the practice squad.

While much of Jacksonville’s offseason revolved around the changes made at offensive tackle, but few tweaks were made on the inside. That leaves Williams with a decent shot at sticking around another year and maybe seeing even more snaps in year four.

Contract (2023): $750,000 base salary, $750,000 cap hit.

Acquired: Jaguars signed Williams as a free agent on July 31, 2022.

Jaguars rule out OLB K’Lavon Chaisson, activate 2 from practice squad

The Jaguars made a few roster moves a day before a Week 4 game against the Eagles.

The Jacksonville Jaguars downgraded both outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson and offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen to out, and activated two players from the practice squad to fill their spots Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Former Chiefs offensive lineman Darryl Williams (not to be confused with former Panthers and Bills lineman Daryl Williams) and former Packers linebacker Ty Summers are now on the active roster and will travel with the team to Philadelphia.

Chaisson, a 2020 first-round pick, has seen his snaps on the Jaguars defense vanish almost entirely since the addition of No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker. Last week, he saw the field for just four defensive snaps and 12 on special teams. After not appearing on the injury report at all Wednesday and Thursday, Chaisson was added Friday with an ankle injury.

In 34 games with the Jaguars, Chaisson has two sacks.

Van Lanen, 24, was acquired in an August trade with the Packers and has appeared on eight special teams snaps and one offensive snap so far with the Jaguars.

Darryl Williams hasn’t played in a regular season NFL game and Summers predominantly contributed on special teams during three seasons in Green Bay, although he did make one start at linebacker in 2020.

Jags sign OL Darryl Willams, waive TE Naz Bohannon

Williams is a third-year player who has spent time with the Chiefs and Patriots before joining the Jags.

With Day 5 of camp completed, the Jacksonville Jaguars made a signing on Saturday by adding offensive lineman Darryl Williams to the roster. To make room for his addition, the Jags waived undrafted rookie Naz Bohannon.

Williams will join the Jags after entering the league in 2020 with the Kansas City Chiefs after going undrafted out of Mississippi State. He spent a majority of his first two seasons on the Chiefs’ practice squad before joining the New England Patriots this offseason.

While playing for Mississippi State, Williams was a three-year starter. He was once a team captain for the Bulldogs as a senior and also earned the Southeastern Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week award twice in 2019.

Williams has spent a majority of his career playing center, so he will give the team depth behind the player who is on track to be the starting center in Luke Fortner. The Jags have a very experience starter and backup center option in Tyler Shatley, but he could end up being a starter at left guard with Fortner at center.

The decision to sign Williams makes sense for the Jags because they’ve had issues at center outside of Shatley and Fortner. Spectators at camp have said that backup interior lineman KC McDermott is struggling with snaps and the Jags took a look at guard Ben Bartch at the position as a result.

Former Chiefs C Darryl Williams to sign with Patriots

Just a few days after he was released by the #Chiefs, center Darryl Williams has found a new team per report.

Just a few days after being released by the Kansas City Chiefs, C Darryl Williams has found a new team.

According to a report from NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, Williams is set to sign with the New England Patriots. Williams originally signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State following the 2020 NFL draft, spending time on the practice squad in each of the past two seasons.

Williams was released ahead of mandatory minicamp in order to make room on the roster for RB Jerick McKinnon. With Austin Reiter and other new interior offensive lineman on the roster, Williams was fighting for reps even during minicamp.

The Patriots have had some success with former Chiefs offensive linemen lately. Last season, ahead of 53-man roster cuts, New England acquired OT Yasir Durant from Kansas City. He’d appear in seven games, including one start during the 2021 NFL season. Perhaps Williams will get a chance to compete through training camp in New England and actually appear in some games with the Patriots.

Chiefs waive C Darryl Williams from 90-man offseason roster

In order to make room for RB Jerick McKinnon, the #Chiefs have waived C Darryl Williams from the 90-man roster.

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived a player from the 90-man offseason.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday, the Chiefs have waived C Darryl Williams from the 90-man offseason roster. Williams had originally signed on with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State following the 2020 NFL draft. He didn’t make the 53-man roster out of training camp that year, but he was among the players signed to the practice squad.

Williams spent the entire regular season on the practice squad that year as well as the majority of the 2021 NFL season. Despite the ability to use a standard elevation on Williams, he was not among the players elevated to the 53-man roster in each of the last two seasons.

The decision to release Williams comes after the team re-signed RB Jerick McKinnon. They needed the free spot on the 90-man roster for McKinnon, so this was just a matter of numbers. With several other interior offensive linemen capable of playing third-string center, Williams was made expendable. He was not spotted at mandatory minicamp practice today, an early sign that this move was coming.

McKinnon’s signing was also made official on the league personnel notice for Tuesday.

Chiefs make a pair of practice squad transactions on Tuesday

The #Chiefs waived a recently-signed player from the practice squad and brought back a familiar face.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a pair of minor transactions on the practice squad on Tuesday.

The Chiefs added Nakia Griffin-Stewart to the practice squad just last week, but he won’t last long in Kansas City. Griffin-Stewart was released by the team after just six days of practice according to the NFL’s official personnel notice.

Many were confused by the signing initially, especially when the team had just traded for TE Daniel Brown. Kansas City often signs players for brief periods like this when they need an extra body for the scout team offense or defense. It’s possible the Chiefs never truly had an intention of giving Griffin-Stewart a chance to stick with the team.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs brought back former UDFA C Darryl Williams. He signed with Kansas City following the 2020 NFL draft and has spent time off and on the practice squad ever since. He was released from the practice squad three weeks ago to make room for DE/OLB Shilique Calhoun.

The Chiefs didn’t have any offensive linemen on the practice squad with Prince Tega Wanogho getting called up to the 53-man roster. This move provides them with some depth on the interior offensive line, though they have 10 offensive linemen on the active roster plus Kyle Long returning to practice this week.

These two moves bring the practice squad in Kansas City to a full 16 players.

Chiefs place C Darryl Williams on Reserve/COVID-19 list

The #Chiefs placed C Darryl Williams on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday. More here:

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed one of their offensive linemen on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs placed second-year center Darryl Williams on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday. The team did not practice on Saturday, so that’s good news as far as any close contacts are concerned. Remember, placement on the Reserve/COVID-19 list doesn’t necessarily mean this is a positive test for Williams.

The undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State has been working with third-team offense at the center position during training camp. He spent the majority of his rookie season on the practice squad in Kansas City.

There are two different sets of rules for those who are vaccinated and unvaccinated and placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Vaccinated players are allowed to return to practice after two negative tests, taken at least 24 hours apart. Unvaccinated players who are deemed high-risk close contacts are required to isolate for a minimum of five days.

In any event, Williams will likely be out of practice for a few days. He won’t count against the 90-man roster so long as he’s on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, but don’t expect an ensuing transaction. Expect Nick Allegretti to pick up the slack snapping the ball when practice resumes on Sunday.

5 free agent OTs the Colts should consider in 2021

OTs the Colts should consider in free agency.

The Indianapolis Colts have big needs to fill this offseason and one of the most important positions they can address in free agency is left tackle.

After the retirement of Anthony Castonzo, the Colts are in a bit of a bind. They could draft one early in the 2021 NFL draft or look to a cheaper option in free agency. It is unlikely they bring in a big name from free agency given the extensions they will need to dish out this offseason.

Going the cheaper route might be more beneficial seeing as the Colts can get away with average left tackle play. Getting a Trent Williams type won’t be feasible with the massive extensions coming up. So we won’t be listing players like Taylor Moton or Russell Okung, who should get consideration in the event the Colts decide to spend.

Here are five offensive tackles the Colts should consider in free agency:
