4 Lions who must have great games vs. the Bills

If the Detroit Lions are to pull off the upset over the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving, these four Lions need to have great games

The Detroit Lions are gunning for their fourth win in a row when they host the Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving.

It’s not going to be easy. The 7-3 Bills are one of the top teams in the AFC with an MVP candidate in Josh Allen at quarterback and the NFL’s top point differential (plus-104) after Week 11. Buffalo is favored by 9.5 points as of Tuesday evening.

For the Lions to pull off the upset, it will take some good fortune and great play from some key sources. Here are four Lions who need to have great Thanksgiving games for Detroit to win.

Updating the Detroit Lions offensive line options for Week 2

Sorting out all the possibilities for the Detroit Lions offensive line while dealing with injuries to Frank Ragnow and Jonah Jackson in Week 2

It’s only Week 2 but already the Detroit Lions are forced to test the limits of their offensive line depth. For a team that was projected to have one of the very best lines in the NFL with the presumptive starting five, it’s a huge blow.

Starting right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai went on injured reserve before Week 1 and has subsequently had back surgery. His top replacement, Tommy Kraemer, missed Week 1 with a back injury of his own. He’s now on IR too.

Now with the Washington Commanders and their talented defensive line on the schedule in Week 2, the Lions will be without Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow. No. 77 has been ruled out with a groin and foot injury.

Evan Brown will take over for Ragnow as he did for the final 13 games last season. But the injuries don’t stop there…

Pro Bowl left guard Jonah Jackson is questionable for Sunday’s game with a finger injury. Jackson missed considerable practice time during the week. Head coach Dan Campbell called Jackson “questionably probable” on Friday, but he said the same of Ragnow–who is out.

The Lions have yet to publicly reveal their plan if Jackson can’t play. They do have a few different options.

The easiest is to see what recent acquisition Drew Forbes can do. The Lions claimed Forbes off waivers from the Cleveland Browns during roster cutdowns, so he’s been in practices in Detroit for the last two weeks. Forbes has never taken a regular-season offensive snap since entering the league in 2019.

The Lions have another fresh body on the roster in Kayode Awosika, signed midweek from the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad. Awosika, like Forbes, is a college tackle with no practical experience at guard, however.

Then there’s the potential to kick right tackle Penei Sewell inside to guard. That would mean third tackle Matt Nelson would take over at right tackle, where he struggled all preseason. Logan Stenberg would likely shift from the current starting right guard to left guard (Jackson’s spot) in that scenario while keeping Sewell on the right side.

Awosika and Forbes can both theoretically step in at tackle too, but that’s asking a lot when facing Jonathan Allen, Montez Sweat and a very talented Commanders line.

On the practice squad, the Lions have three players who could see promotions to active duty on Sunday. Tackle Dan Skipper, guard Darrin Paulo and center Ross Pierschbacher provide the practice squad depth. With no other options who have even played center before, expect Pierschbacher to be promoted on Sunday in a reserve capacity.

Lions sign OL Kayode Awosika from the Eagles practice squad

The Detroit Lions sign OL Kayode Awosika from the Eagles practice squad

The Detroit Lions have added another offensive lineman to the den on Wednesday. Detroit signed Kayode Awosika to the team.

Awosika was previously on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad. He’s in his second NFL season out of Buffalo, signed by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent following the 2021 NFL draft.

He can play either guard or tackle, but Awosika is primarily a guard in his limited NFL stint. Because he’s signed to the active roster, the Lions have to make a corollary move to create an opening. This could be a real indication that RG Tommy Kraemer, who did not play in Week 1 and did not practice this week with a back injury, could be headed to injured reserve.

The Lions also brought OL Darrin Paulo back to the team’s practice squad.

Lions bring back OL Darrin Paulo to the practice squad

The Detroit LIons brought back offensive lineman Darrin Paulo to the practice squad to help with the rash of OL injuries

The on-again, off-again relationship between offensive lineman Darrin Paulo and the Detroit Lions is back in the on position. The Lions signed Paulo to the team’s practice squad on Wednesday.

Paulo was brought into training camp after the first few days and performed solidly. The 25-year-old was part of the Lions’ final roster cutdowns but did not sign anywhere else.

Now Paulo is back on the practice squad, where he spent four different stints in the 2021 season. The Lions need him, too. With starting RG Halapoulivaati Vaitai on IR and both RG Tommy Kraemer and C Frank Ragnow limited in practice with injuries, Paulo’s presence was something of a necessity. Detroit released rookie TE Derrick Deese from the practice squad a day earlier to create room.

Paulo is primarily a tackle but has also played at guard in his numerous stints with both the Lions and Broncos since starting his career in 2020. He has yet to play in a regular-season game.

Lions bring back OT Darrin Paulo, waive LB Natrez Patrick

The Detroit Lions bring back OT Darrin Paulo and waive LB Natrez Patrick with injury designation

We have a roster move after two days of Lions training camp. Detroit has signed free agent OT Darrin Paulo.

His name should sound familiar. Paulo, 25, was on the Lions practice squad for most of the 2021 season after spending last summer in Lions camp. He also had a stint with the Denver Broncos.

Paulo replaced LB Natrez Patrick on Detroit’s roster. The Lions waived Patrick with an injury designation. With reserve OT Dan Skipper on the non-football illness list, the team needed the depth boost at OT more than an extra LB who wasn’t going to make the final 53-man roster.

Lions release practice squad OL Darrin Paulo, protect 4 players

The Lions released Darrin Paulo and protected the same 4 players on the practice squad, which is a sign of an ongoing position battle

Tuesdays are typically practice squad transaction day, and this week was no exception. The Lions did a little tinkering with the practice squad on the players’ day off.

Offensive lineman Darrin Paulo was released by the team. Paulo has been with the Lions off and on since the start of training camp. His release is a good sign for the injury status of reserve OT Matt Nelson, who has missed the last two weeks with an ankle injury.

The Lions also opted to issue the weekly protection on the same foursome of practice squad players they have for the last three weeks.

  • Bruce Hector, defensive lineman
  • Steven Montez, quarterback
  • Aldrick Rosas, kicker
  • Shayne Zylstra, tight end

The ongoing protection of Rosas indicates the team isn’t yet sold on rookie Riley Patterson. Rosas started ahead of Patterson in Week 11 but the rookie handled his business in Week 12. It’s also a sign that regular kicker Austin Seibert is unlikely to return anytime soon from the injured reserve list.

Lions place Corey Ballentine on IR, sign Shakur Brown to practice squad

The Detroit Lions place CB Corey Ballentine on IR, sign former Michigan State CB Shakur Brown to the practice squad

The injured reserve list continues to grow for the Detroit Lions. On Friday, the team placed cornerback and kick returner Corey Ballentine on the IR with a hamstring injury.

Ballentine has not practiced this week, and the decision was made to put the young DB on the IR. In three games in Detroit, Ballentine has played exclusively on special teams. The Lions acquired him earlier this season off waivers from the New York Jets.

In practice squad roster moves, the Lions added former Michigan State cornerback Shakur Brown to the unit. To make room for Brown, who was most recently on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad, the Lions released OL Darrin Paulo from the practice squad.

Lions sign free agent OT Darrin Paulo

Paulo spent 2020 on the Broncos practice squad

On the eve of the OTAs, the Detroit Lions have added another offensive tackle to the mix. The Lions announced they have signed free agent OT Darrin Paulo.

The 6-5, 317-pound Paulo is entering his second NFL season. He spent 2020 on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad as an undrafted rookie out of Utah. Paulo also had time with the New Orleans Saints during the 2020 offseason. He was a starting left tackle for Utah but projects almost exclusively as a right tackle in the NFL.

Signing Paulo brings the Lions to a full 90-man roster entering this week’s OTAs in Allen Park.

Darrin Paulo is the latest Saints roster cut to catch on elsewhere

The New Orleans Saints waived rookie left tackle Darrin Paulo, who was claimed by the Denver Broncos for a big training camp opportunity.

A theme of New Orleans Saints training camp has been how often players they’ve let go have been snatched up by rival teams. Rookie offensive lineman Darrin Paulo joined that list when the Denver Broncos claimed him off of waivers on Aug. 30, making the Utah prospect the latest member of the black and gold to earn a quick turnaround for his next NFL opportunity.

Back at the start of training camp, the Saints waived a group of ten players according to NFL rules requiring rosters to thin down from 90 contracts to just 80.  Three of them were signed right away: defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth, cornerback Deatrick Nichols, and wide receiver Tommylee Lewis. Wide receiver Krishawn Hogan also joined a new team after a few tryouts.

Other familiar names to Saints fans who recently earned new shots around the league: cornerbacks B.W. Webb and Ken Crawley, together with the Arizona Cardinals; linebackers Will Compton and Jayrone Elliott; and a host of former Saints with the Carolina Panthers, led by quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and coordinator Joe Brady.

The Saints have assembled a roster where talent runs deep, and it shouldn’t shock anyone that other teams are taking notice. It just adds more intrigue to an upcoming wave of releases and re-signings to the practice squad. For his part, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis is already fretting over whether they might let a good player get away.

Broncos claim left tackle Darrin Paulo off waivers

Broncos added rookie offensive tackle Darrin Paulo to their roster.

The Denver Broncos were awarded rookie offensive tackle Darrin Paulo off the waiver wire, according to The MMQB’s Albert Breer.

Paulo (6-5, 315 pounds) is a 23-year-old rookie who played college football at Utah. Paulo signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in April.

Paulo had been practicing with the Saints’ third-string offense before being waived on Saturday, according to John Sigler of Saints Wire.

Paulo was a four-year starter at Utah, beginning his career at right tackle before transitioning to the left side. He earned Pac-12 All-Conference first-team honors as a senior in 2019 and was invited to the East-West Shrine Bowl. Paulo started in 40 of the 41 games he played in as a lineman.

Denver will have to make a corresponding roster move to make room for Paulo on the 80-man offseason roster. The Broncos also agreed to terms with linebacker Mark Barron on Sunday.

Denver now has nine offensive tackles on the roster: Paulo, Garett Bolles, Demar Dotson, Elijah Wilkinson, Calvin Anderson, Quinn Bailey, Tyler Jones, Jake Rodgers and Hunter Watts.
