Former Patriots look back on ridiculously stacked 2014 defense

Defensive lineups don’t get much scarier than this

It’s easy to forget how ridiculously stacked the New England Patriots were defensively in their 2014 Super Bowl-winning season.

A Twitter post looking back on the unit got a retweet from multiple former Patriots players that were on the roster at that time, including Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Patrick Chung and James White.

Other standouts included Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis, Vince Wilfork, Chandler Jones, Jerod Mayo, Devin McCourty, Logan Ryan, Brandon Browner and Rob Ninkovich.

It’s one of the most imposing defensive lineups on paper in franchise history. Some of the greatest players that have ever suited up in a Patriots uniform were on the roster.

It’s an incredible stroll down memory lane that former Patriots players decided to chime in on.

The Patriots went on to defeat the Seattle Seahawks at Super Bowl XLIX that season.

After Tom Brady and the offense engineered another one of their improbable comebacks, Malcolm Butler, who was an undrafted rookie cornerback at the time, secured a goal line interception on Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson to help the defense seal the victory.

Diana Askew, mother of Darrelle Revis, to present Jets great into Hall

Mama Revis will induct her son into the Hall.

One of the greatest cornerbacks in both Jets and NFL history will soon take his rightful place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. And it will be none other than his mother that gets to do the honors.

Revis recently shared that his mother, Diana Askew, will be Revis’ presenter at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, August 5, two days after the Jets play the Cleveland Browns in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, August 3.

Revis’ mother always played a huge part in his life and his NFL career, so it’s only fitting that she be the one to have the honor of bringing her son to football immortality.

Joining Revis in this year’s class are fellow Jets great Joe Klecko, defensive back Ronde Barber, coach Don Coryell, linebacker Chuck Howley, cornerback Ken Riley, offensive tackle Joe Thomas, linebacker Zach Thomas and edge-rusher Demarcus Ware.

Every player drafted with 14th overall pick in the last 20 years

Taking a stroll down memory lane with a look at every player drafted at No. 14 over the last 20 years.

The No. 14 overall pick of the NFL draft has produced current and future Hall of Famers, along with a slew of other prospects that have gone on to have tremendous professional careers.

In nearly two weeks, the New England Patriots hope to join the short list of teams that have knocked it out of the park over the last two decades with the No. 14 pick.

They’ll have a chance to fill a serious need on the roster at receiver, cornerback, offensive tackle and safety. Or, maybe they’ll throw a curveball and attempt to address a position no one is expecting. The latter sounds like a scenario with coach Bill Belichick’s name written all over it.

Here’s a list of every No. 14 draft pick over the last 20 years.

Can past CB trades tell us what the Rams might get for Jalen Ramsey?

Cornerbacks have historically not yielded much in trades, but will it be different for Jalen Ramsey if the Rams move him?

One of the biggest storylines for the Los Angeles Rams this offseason is the possibility of trading star cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The Rams have talked to teams about Ramsey already, and though nothing is on the verge of happening yet, league sources told Tom Pelissero that he’s “very likely” to be dealt in the coming weeks.

Ramsey is 28 years old and will be 29 in October, so he’s still got plenty of good football ahead of him. He also has three years left on his contract and has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last six seasons.

Cornerbacks of his caliber don’t come available very often, which makes this a somewhat rare situation. The Rams are seeking cap space and draft capital, but how much they could get in return for Ramsey is a big question.

Looking back at trades involving star cornerbacks since 2000, we can get a sense of what a team might give up for Ramsey. Every trade situation differs, so there isn’t a perfect one-for-one comparison. But history tells us cornerbacks don’t typically get traded for a whole lot.

Technically, the Bucs are getting 2 new Hall of Famers this year

Rondé Barber won’t be the only former Tampa Bay Buccaneer heading to Canton this fall

Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans rejoiced when it was announced Thursday night that Rondé Barber would finally be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

But technically, Barber won’t be the only former Bucs player going into Canton this year.

He’ll be joined by Darrelle Revis, who played one of his 11 NFL seasons in Tampa Bay.

The year after Barber retired following a 16-year career with the Bucs, Tampa Bay traded its first-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft to the Jets for Revis, who was coming off a season-ending knee injury that limited him to just two games the year before.

Revis started all 16 games for the Bucs in 2013, but Tampa Bay wasted his best traits by forcing him to play in their zone-heavy scheme, instead of taking advantage of his dominance in man coverage. Even so, he was named to one of his seven Pro Bowls that year.

After just one season, the Bucs tried to trade Revis, but ultimately released him to avoid paying his $16 million salary the following season.

It was one of the worst trades in Bucs history (and that’s saying something), but he’s still technically a former member of the team heading to the Hall of Fame alongside Barber.

NFL Honors turns into historic night for Jets

An unprecedented night for the New York Jets at the NFL Honors Thursday.

The NFL Honors is a time to celebrate the best players and moments of the just-completed regular season and some teams end up having reason to celebrate more. For the Jets, this year’s event became a huge night for the franchise.

Not only did Jets players take home both Rookie of the Year awards — Garrett Wilson on offense, Sauce Gardner on defense — but the Jets have not one, but two new members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Darrelle Revis and Joe Klecko.

In fact, the night was so big, it was unprecedented.  No team had ever accomplished such a feat in the same year before. No team had ever claimed both the Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year as well as having two players elected to the Hall of the Fame all in the same year.

What had the potential to be a great night for the Jets turned into a historic one and all are absolutely deserving of their respective accomplishments Thursday night.

There were 15 modern-era finalists, with Dwight Freeney, Revis and Thomas as the three first-ballot players.

Revis Island has a new home. You can now visit the luxurious island in the halls of Canton, Ohio. Darrelle Revis is a Hall of Fame cornerback.

The great Jets cornerback was elected Thursday as part of the NFL Honors ceremony. This was Revis’ first year on the Hall of Fame ballot and he wasted no time getting to call to Canton.

New York’s first-round pick in 2007 played 11 seasons in the NFL including eight with the Jets. He was voted to the Pro Bowl seven times and also was named First-Team All-Pro four times (2009-2011, 2014).

Revis won a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2014 and is a part of the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s.

Revis will go down as one of the greatest shutdown cornerbacks ever and will now forever be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Tariq Woolen, Sauce Gardner share mutual respect following Week 17 game

Richard Sherman vs. Darrelle Revis this is not.

Richard Sherman vs. Darrelle Revis this is not. While there’s some healthy debate as to who the better corner this, there doesn’t appear to be any bad blood between Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen and Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner.

Watch the two rookie stars embrace after last week’s game and share some mutual respect.
