5 veteran running backs the Rams could sign following Sony Michel’s retirement

Sony Michel announced his retirement and the Rams could look to sign one of these veterans to provide depth at RB.

The Los Angeles Rams aren’t far into training camp and they’ll be in the market for at least one veteran running back. Sony Michel had a conversation with Sean McVay ahead of the team’s training camp practice on Saturday to share that he’s retiring from the NFL.

Michel was brought in to give the Rams depth and experience at the running back position before announcing his retirement. Cam Akers, Kyren Williams, Zach Evans, and Ronnie Rivers are the remaining running backs on the current roster.

With McVay revealing that the Rams are looking to bring at least one more running back upon Michel’s departure, here are five veterans they could look to sign.

Patriots reportedly worked out free agent RB Darrell Henderson

Patriots reportedly had running back Darrell Henderson in for a workout

The New England Patriots worked out running back Darrell Henderson on Wednesday, in addition to hosting Leonard Fournette.

Henderson was drafted in the third round in 2019. He played for the Rams from 2019-2022 and was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars after he was waived by Los Angeles last November.

Henderson has had a productive career to this point, recording 1,742 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in four seasons. New England needs running back depth, and he could benefit from a change of scenery with the Patriots. He has still yet to enter his prime at 25 years old, and it could be a low-risk, high-reward signing.

New England could have the opportunity to make a move relatively soon at the running back position. Depth could be important, especially after Rhamondre Stevenson’s heavy workload last year.

Darrell Henderson, Kekoa Crawford among tryout players at Chiefs’ mandatory minicamp

The #Chiefs’ tryout players at mandatory minicamp include a four-year NFL veteran at running back and a wide receiver who already tried out for the team in May.

The Kansas City Chiefs have invited a few tryout players to attend the team’s mandatory minicamp.

A full list of players has yet to be reported, but on Tuesday we learned of two of the players in attendance. One of those players is former Cal WR Dylan “Kekoa” Crawford, who was also one of the team’s tryout players during rookie minicamp back in May. It’s clear the team wanted to get a second look at the 25-year-old wide receiver.

An undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL draft, Crawford signed with the Indianapolis Colts, but never made it to training camp. In 2021, he led the Golden Bears in receptions with 40 catches and finished second on the team with 513 receiving yards.

Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick spotted Crawford at practice on Wednesday and said he posted a strong performance.

In addition to Crawford, the Chiefs hosted a four-year NFL veteran in former Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars RB Darrell Henderson.

The Rams waived RB Darrell Henderson Jr. last season, right around the time that Clyde Edwards-Helaire landed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain. We thought the Chiefs would potentially put in a waiver claim, but Henderson was claimed by the Jaguars instead. Kansas City later opted to sign Melvin Gordon to the practice squad.

Henderson is described as a good one-cut runner, a capable pass-catcher and an above-average blocker. During his nearly 30 career starts, Henderson has amassed 396 attempts for over 1,700 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. He also has 66 receptions for nearly 500 yards and four touchdowns in his NFL career.

The 25-year-old running back previously met with the Chiefs at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, so this is a player they’ve had their eye on for a while now.

Giants named a possible landing spot for RB Darrell Henderson

Despite their depth at the position, the New York Giants have been named a “realistic landing spot” for RB Darrell Henderson.

The New York Giants appear to be set at running back even with Saquon Barkley currently away from the team due to a contract dispute.

Eventually, Barkley will either sign his franchise tender or receive the long-term deal he desires. When that time comes, he’ll be back with the team in the starting role.

Behind Barkley is capable veteran Matt Breida, rookie Eric Gray and 2021 sixth-round pick Gary Brightwell. Jashaun Corbin also remains on the roster.

Despite their apparent depth, do the Giants need more at the position? Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report believes they do and recently named the Giants a “realistic landing spot” for Darrell Henderson.

Matt Breida and Gary Brightwell — the next two running backs on the depth chart — had just 85 combined carries last season.

However, putting all the eggs in the Barkley basket is a risky strategy. As electrifying as the 26-year-old is when healthy, he has already dealt with an ACL tear and multiple ankle ailments in his five-year NFL career.

The Giants would be wise to find a back who can be trusted to take some reps throughout the season and keep Barkley fresh after logging 295 carries last season.

Darrell Henderson could fit that bill. He’ll be 26 when the season starts and reportedly worked out for the Giants in December after being cut by the Los Angeles Rams in November.

. . .

Given what Daboll did to help revive Barkley’s career, he could have the same effect on a smaller scale with Henderson.

Although the Brian Daboll/Mike Kafka offense was an ideal fit for Barkley, his revival came as a result of health and not necessarily the coaching. That’s not to say Daboll & Co. couldn’t help to revive Henderson’s career but comparing the two situations is like comparing apples to oranges.

The 25-year-old Henderson has never been the dominant dual-threat back Barkley has been and the Giants already passed him over after a look. Coupled with limited cap space and a remaining need at edge rusher, it seems unlikely that the Giants would even shell out a veteran minimum contract for a backup running back.

Browns host former Super Bowl champion running back Darrell Henderson

Could the former Ram add depth behind Nick Chubb?

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

After the team decided not to re-sign running backs Kareem Hunt and D’Ernest Johnson the team has needed depth behind Nick Chubb. Second-year running back Jerome Ford is a quality young player with upside but there isn’t much else on the depth chart. SI’s Noah Weiskopf is reporting that on Wednesday the Cleveland Browns brought in running back Darrell Henderson for a visit.

Over his four-year career, Henderson rushed for a total of 1,742 yards averaging 4.4 yards per carry and scoring 17 total touchdowns. He would likely battle for the backup job behind Chubb but would provide a quality change of pace off the bench for the Browns.

Cardinals brought in former Rams RB Darrell Henderson for visit

Henderson had nearly 900 total yards from scrimmage in 2021 for the Rams.

The Arizona Cardinals were busy earlier in the week bringing in players for a look. They had several workouts and brought in a player for a visit.

According to Tuesday’s NFL transaction report, former Los Angeles Rams running back Darrell Henderson was in the facility for a visit.

There was no signing to announce, but the team did bring him in.

Henderson was recently released by the Rams, in his fourth season with the team.

In four seasons, the 5-8, 208-lb Henderson has averaged 4.4 yards per attempt and has 1,742 career rushing yards to go with 13 rushing touchdowns.

He has played in 50 games, starting 28 of them.

His most productive season was 2021. He had 688 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns on 4.6 yards per attempt. He also caught 29 passes for 176 yards and three scores, giving him 864 total yards from scrimmage.

Giants work out Darrell Henderson, other running backs

The New York Giants hosted several running backs on a tryout basis on Tuesday, including ex-Ram Darrell Henderson.

The New York Giants hosted a trio of running backs for tryouts in East Rutherford on Tuesday, including former Los Angeles Ram Darrell Henderson.

The 25-year-old Henderson was a third-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft and spent his first three-plus years in Los Angeles. He was waived in late November and promptly claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

That stay was short-lived as the Jags waived Henderson just two and a half weeks later.

In 50 career games (28 starts), Henderson has rushed for 1,742 yards and 13 touchdowns with a 4.4 ypc average. He has also caught 66 passes for 474 yards and four touchdowns.

In addition to Henderson, the Giants worked out running backs Abram Smith and Nate McCrary.

Smith is an undrafted rookie who currently plays for the DC Defenders of the XFL, while McCrary is a two-year journeyman with just a single NFL carry.

None of the three were immediately signed to a contract. Their workouts do not appear to be a reflection on the health of the Giants’ backs, none of whom appeared on Tuesday’s projected injury report.

Jaguars activate OLB K’Lavon Chaisson off injured reserve

K’Lavon Chaisson is back on the Jaguars’ active roster, two months after landing on IR.

Jacksonville Jaguars outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson is back on the team’s active roster after a stint on the team’s injured reserve.

On Saturday, the Jaguars announced the move, just over two weeks after Chaisson was designated to return. The 2020 first-round pick landed on the injured reserve in October due to a meniscus injury.

The Jaguars are in desperate need of some pass rushing help as they rank 30th in the NFL in sacks through the first 13 weeks of the season. Chaisson may not provide much relief, though, as the highly-touted draft prospect has managed only two sacks in 35 career games.

In four games earlier this season, Chaisson played only 31 defensive snaps and recorded three tackles with no quarterback hits.

Jacksonville had an open spot on the active roster after waiving running back Darrell Henderson on Friday. The team also announced that linebacker Ty Summers has been elevated from the practice squad with rookie Chad Muma set to miss the team’s Week 14 game against the Tennessee Titans.

Jaguars waive RB Darrell Henderson, who never played a game with team

Darrell Henderson’s time with the Jaguars is already over.

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived running back Darrell Henderson Jr. on Friday, two weeks after claiming the former Los Angeles Rams starter.

Henderson, 25, never played a game with the Jaguars after he was claimed on Nov. 23. The running back was declared inactive both weeks he spent with Jacksonville and was listed as questionable in Week 13 due to an illness.

The Jaguars began the season with the tandem of James Robinson and Travis Etienne Jr. in the backfield, but opted to trade away Robinson in October. Etienne has seen the vast majority of the touches since the trade with JaMycal Hasty and Snoop Conner occasionally getting carries.

Henderson was a third-round pick for the Rams in the 2019 NFL Draft and recorded 1,742 rushing yards and 17 total touchdowns in 50 career games with the team.

In addition to Etienne, Hasty, and Conner, the Jaguars also have second-year back Mekhi Sargent on the practice squad.

Doug Pederson: We might need Darrell Henderson vs. Lions

New Jaguars RB Darrell Henderson may be called to action in Week 13.

Darrell Henderson wasn’t ready to make his Jacksonville Jaguars debut just four days after he was claimed by the team off waivers, but the former Los Angeles Rams starting running back may be called to action in Week 13.

“We got to get him some touches this week in practice, we got to get him caught up,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said of Henderson on Monday. “We will spend these next couple days meeting with him and getting him going. I think it’s possible that, obviously, working him into practice, but he could be a player that we might need for the game.”

The Jaguars have leaned heavily on Travis Etienne Jr. at running back since trading James Robinson to the New York Jets in October. However in a Week 12 win over the Baltimore Ravens, Etienne carried the ball just twice for three yards before heading to the locker room with a foot injury.

Etienne returned to the sideline and was okay to return, but was kept out for the remainder of the game as a precaution, according to Pederson.

Backup JaMycal Hasty instead took the brunt of the snaps in the backfield Sunday. While he had a career-best 67 receiving yards, Hasty managed just 28 rushing yards on 12 carries against a stout Ravens run defense.

Etienne is likely to play in Week 13, but the Jaguars may look to limit his work load after his injury scare. And the team may be hesitant to give many carries to Hasty, who is averaging 2.6 yards per carry since the Robinson deal.

Henderson, 25, averaged 4.4 yards in four seasons with the Rams and was averaging 4.0 yards this season before he was surprisingly waived last week.
