Dark Souls servers offline following reports of massive security threat

Publisher Namco Bandai responds.

The PvP servers for Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3 on PC are currently offline following reports of alleged security exploits.

Over on Reddit, user  TripleBrownMeow  shared an announcement from the Elden Ring  Subreddit Discord server about a Remote Code Execution (RCE) exploit in the PC versions of Dark Souls  that allows hackers to run “arbitrary code” on players computers. According to the post, this RCE exploit allegedly lets hackers partake in malicious activities on your PC, like steal login and banking information or even brick the hardware itself.

The exploit appears to be in all of FromSoftware’s modern titles with multiplayer features, with some users allegedly finding it in Elden Ring’s  demo code

It is now possible for Dark Souls 3 invaders to run code on your PC without permission. AKA RCE, Remote Code Execution. This same hack is possible in Elden Ring. from Eldenring

Dark Souls  publisher Bandai Namco  gave its thanks in the thread soon after and promptly took the PvP servers down to remedy the issue. On Sunday, the official Dark Souls  Twitter made an announcement regarding the situation.

Anyone playing these games on PlayStation or Xbox consoles need not worry, as the issue seems to be exclusive to the PC versions.

As of Monday at 9:50 A.M. PDT // 12:50 P.M. Bandai Namco has yet to update everyone regarding these reports.

Dark Souls is the Ultimate Game of All Time, according to the Golden Joystick Awards

Praise the sun!

Dark Souls  won the 2021 Golden Golden Joystick award for Ultimate Game of All Time.

Yes, indeed, FromSoftware’s seminal action RPG had more fan votes than any other nominees at Gameradar’s  Golden Joysticks. The category celebrated 50 years’ worth of video games, so Dark Souls  had some stiff competition.

The complete list of nominees included:

  • Dark Souls
  • Doom (1993)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Half-Life 2
  • Minecraft
  • Street Fighter II
  • Tetris
  • The Last of Us
  • Super Mario 64
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Portal
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Pac Man
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Space Invaders
  • Sim City (1989)
  • Pokémon GO

While Dark Souls is ridiculously popular, it’s wild to see it come out on top given some of the inclusions on this list. Both Minecraft  and Grand Theft Auto V, for example, tower over it in sales. Betting on the underdog paid off this time!

That wasn’t the only big win for FromSoftware either. The studio’s forthcoming open-world RPG, Elden Ring, took home the Golden Joystick’s Most Wanted Game award.

We spent some time with Elden Ring  recently and quite liked it. While the game recently got hit with a delay, it’s  still coming out fairly soon.

The new ‘Elden Ring’ gameplay trailer is making fans go wild

Everyone is going bananas over Elden Ring.

A new gameplay preview for the wildly-anticipated Elden Ring  dropped on Thursday, and fans are a teensy-weensy bit excited. By that, I mean they’re frothing at the mouth, barely able to contain their hype.

It’s hard to blame them, of course. FromSoftware is behind modern-day classics like Dark SoulsBloodborne, and Sekiro — undeniably one of the best development studios making video games these days. Not to mention George R. R. Martin, the author behind Game of Throneshelped pen the story for Elden Ring. So the expectations for this game are through the roof.

Check out the extended gameplay preview for Elden Ring  for yourself below. There are some slight boss encounter spoilers in the footage, just as a heads up.

Elden Ring  is coming out on Feb. 25, 2022, but if you can’t wait that long to try it out, there’s a beta test coming up soon.

You’re still reeling from that preview, eh? No problem. Everyone across social media is in the same boat. Some fans are picking apart nitty-gritty details, while others are too stoked for coherent thought, and naturally, loads more are dropping memes. I’ve gathered a bunch of the best reactions for you to check out below.
